It was a cute movie. Why do you say "I'm the Dead Girl"? I mean this with respect --I love you. Some times it helps to say that to a stranger.

I relished Mary's girlfriend coming over to help her the most, with her east coast urban acting, showing friendship affection for a single girl becoming a single mother in a big city. The moment of womanly company without Jimmy of showing how to make it an alright time as working girls is what otherwise wouldn't be a seen scene after the Hays Code. After 1934, it's de-naturalized and the romantic love between men and women is tailored with aim to show only the social procurement of it, rather than all social life together and what's in between. I feel that part of the film solidifies "Strange Marriage"(1932) as anchored just a bit more of Mary 's survival and vivacity than the begotten sweet re-unioning.

Yes that happens till they really fall in love.

That was a great line and unfortunately told to Mary as a con by Jack the rat. Well he finally got decked out.

She is wonderful. The 2nd half of the movie is very different from the first part. The character is so sweet and helpful.

Movies of the early 30s seem to take account of the economic hardship in the background, without sugarcoating it with happy endings (as you start to see post 1938, say).

So much more real. Right. That's why they had to be stopped. Today though the producers might get 20 years for circulating misinformation.

Lori Bollinger Fictional rich people have always lived well, that's for sure. The real Depression-oppressed average people, not at all. They went to the movies to be shown a fantasy that even people today believe existed somewhere for someone.

I thought that the title (and the story) implied that they never consummated their marriage, but it looks like they did.

And what about the fact his Parents said nothing; showed no emotion towards their Grand Baby & wouldn't even stop the car f/ him to Safely approach his Baby!

It was all so crazy. She rushes to tell him on his wedding day & she dresses up with hat and all the baby has is a diaper and blanket.

the plot. 😂 the way it piles in so many twists and obstacles and absurdities in a mere 60 mins is genius.

And you would have seen 2 movies in that movie theatre too, with an intermission, plus a Tom & Jerry cartoon, or maybe even 2 cartoons, and some Metro News!

The movies back then was to forget the everyday life during the depression. To say there's too much violence and nudity. Back then they just implied sex which was better than today because they actually show nudity and sex scenes. Leave a Nothing to the imagination. Actually told the story not like today where half the seans make no sense. I love these old movies. So much more interesting.

You can buy vintage clothing. I saw a young lady here in England last week in beautiful vintage clothing and told her that she looked so feminine. I could tell that I made her day. Lol

@@Richie8a8y The Hays code was voluntary. The film industry was a mess and people did not know what they were going to see at the movies, they stopped going. The Code saved the industry. Hays was Presbyterian, not Catholic, the church had nothing to do with it except submit a list of guidelines they were asked for.

The industry does not appear to be a mess looking at the quality of these pre code films. I do not believe the Code was anything other than moralistic hypocritical censorship serving a political agenda against ordinary people getting wised up or encouraged to believe in the worth of their own experiences. Everything that followed was gaslighting and BS and above all boring, which is why the industry is gasping for breath now, having choked itself with idiotic stimulants since those days. @@saran3214

I remember riding the 'subway' ( the Brit's say "tube" ) in NYC June '88 crammed in a carriage like sardines in a tin, when all you want is your 'stop' to arrive. I spent 11 weeks living & working there when just 21. The Grand Canyon was by far the best, we drove there from Lancaster P.A it took 5 days, the sunrise at 6.20 was so impressive: the colours of that deep canyon slowly change hue, as the sun gets higher. These are some precious memories of years gone by, I share with you.

It's known as The Great Depression. My mother raised me on stories about the hard times everyone had and how they coped. Her family lived in the country so they could at least grow a vegetable garden, have some chickens and eggs, and share a cow with neighboring relatives for milk. (As long as the weather cooperated, they could scrounge up seeds for planting, the cow didn't go dry or die, and the hens kept laying, that is.) Her father had a badly crippled leg, so no one would hire him for farm work. They were so cash poor for things that couldn't be raised, like clothes and doctor bills. My dad's family was even worse off, his mother died when he was 10, leaving 7 children behind, born within 12 years. The last birth of twin infants killed her and they died soon after. Grandpa never remarried until he was an old man.

Marie Prevost is the actresses name. She always played those types of roles and she was hilarious at it. Great one liners. Sadly, her death a few short years after this movie became legendary.
