Strange Moments From What's My Line

Here are a few clips of what were possibly the strangest moments of this lauded CBS Game Show, which aired on Sunday Nights for seventeen years (1950 - 1967) and was hosted by John Daly. This classic program, the premise of which simply was a panel of 4 celebrities try to name a contestants occupation, was a staple of mid 20th Century television. The show aired live every Sunday, and sometimes there were some unforseen events. Here are a few of them. First, Mystery Guest Melina Mercouri and John Daly are a bit rattled by an intruder who suddenly pops up and starts to shill for a "dating service" before he is quickly escorted away by Johnny Olson and producer Gil Fates, the next one has Buddy Hackett introducing long-time show stalwart Dorothy Kilgallen and she appears to be drunk possibly, which is rather unsettling, and finally, comedian Henry Morgan expresses displeasure at also long-time stalwart Bennett Cerf's uneasy intro and him and John Daly's dull banter. All from the early to mid 1960s and all very strange!

It is interesting that the intruder was escorted off by announcer Johnny Olsen and producer Gil Fates. There apparently were no security people on duty. Could you imagine a television show today with that kind of lax security? Henry Morgan was right about Bennett Cerf's story being boring, but his rude interruption was totally out of place on this genteel program.

I read many years ago that this "intruder" was actually someone who was supposed to walk on camera and give a short commercial blurb. So he did exactly what he was supposed to be doing. The problem was he went to the wrong studio and wound up on WML in error.

to me henry morgan (not even a regular) was rude and his actions uncalled for and out of place. and yes, daly is just a wonder: he rescued the situation from awkwardness, put morgan in his place, showed solidarity with bennet, had a laugh, and got the show back on track; that's keen instinct and even better character.
@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath

jimmysudar You are delusional about the last part. Cerf was a ham, apparently and admitted ham, and lovedthe limelight and wanted to dominate the show which was not his show. for some reason he got away with it because he owned a publishing company and everybody wanted him to publish their book. He wasn’t always in the last position on the panel yeah obviously jockey to get that early on but initially he was not in that position and probably not even a regular at first. He was a crook who started a fraudulent writing score that bilked tens of millions of dollars out of hard working author wannabes With no talent only dreams.

Man... okay, at first I thought it was probably a mini-stroke, but looking back at it, it really is quite clear that the innocent answer is the correct one: she was stifling a sneeze. That's exactly how I'd talk if I had a sudden severe irritation in the upper breathing tract, but was absolutely *determined* that the show must go on and I had to finish my sentence. Note that she does finally manage to get Cerf's name out fine and apologises after that final little cough.

It was embarrassing to watch and I do not think anyone handled it very well -- the host tried to defend Cerf by completing the story and that did not work too well either. I do not think Morgan should have said anything if only because Cerf had not in fact gone on that long. No one likes to be treated that way and if Cerf was a little pompous, firstly, he had earned it, he was indeed a smart and educated man but more importantly, he sure seemed like a nice enough guy to me. Henry Morgan may not have meant anything by it, just going for a laugh or maybe they had some problems with each other that we don't know about -- I doubt that after that exchange they remained very friendly. One thing I have noticed: if you embarrass someone, they sure remember it. I made a mean remark at a meeting that was out of line and actually could have gotten me fired -- I did not get fired but the guy waited two years before he retaliated, I am pretty sure, for that remark as far in the past that it was. Anyway, I doubt that Morgan was invited to any of Cerf's swanky parties after that. If Morgan had apologized promptly, perhaps a wise man like Cerf would have been impressed but if Morgan did not offer his hand right after the show, I do not believe Cerf would have forgiven him: I do believe if you offend someone, you can minimize the damage by apologizing promptly, otherwise the offended person firstly has plenty of time to relive the embarrassment and secondly, your motives might be suspect: if you wait to apologize until you need a favor, guess how that guy will retaliate?

Well stifling a sneeze is no fun with a camera in your face on national T. V. She got though what ever it was. They did use tranquilizers and cocktails back then I imagine. The doctor with his black bag could do house calls and have tranquilizers on hand as needed. They were so busy with travel and show business it's a wonder how they got enough sleep and rest. Miss Kilgallen had children and a husband and her writing schedule. Jet lagged at times they all probably were sometimes and needed the pep pills perhaps.

There was nothing amusing about Henry Morgan's behaviour. He was an invited guest to the show who had an ego the size of New York City itself. His actions would be the same as someone invited to another's home and then trying to embarrass their host in front of others. Daly clearly wasn't pleased and stood up for Bennett Cerf. When you hear John Daley say Schedule 2, it’s a term I learned in broadcasting. It pretty much means that something has happened on the air and the cameras need to be immediately focused on primarily the emcee or host or another “neutral” area. And also for the audio the be immediately muted until the call for said “Schedule 2” is lifted. Edit: I wrote this before I seen the other gentleman comment explaining schedule 2 long before I did.

Great to see a very young Melina Mercouri! She was always actively involved in many aspects of the Greek social and political world, in addition to her impressive career as a singer and as a film and stage actress. She was appointed Minister for Culture of Greece; being the first female in that post in 1981. It was psychologically interesting to watch her reactions to the intruder, completely unafraid. First viewing, knowing her history, I thought at the elast something was very wrong. Second viewing, I agree, it's just a sneeze. Daly was ready to walk over and slap Morgan in the face but fortunately restrained himself and just completed the story. He was MAD.

"Bleed Purple," "laxjetbear" and "Chill out SessionZ" are all remiss because none of them describes how Kilgallen behaves during the remaining 25 minutes of that episode. She recovers quickly from her meltdown. You Tube doesn't have the segment with a contestant wearing a fancy dress who is a bronco buster and steer wrestler. If you ever watch it you will hear Dorothy say clearly to John, "Arlene just wanted to know if that was misleading." She was referring to the contestant's glamor.

@streetpilot123 -- Not quite. Hairdresser Marc Sinclaire found her dead approximately ten hours after the live broadcast ended. She had been dead for several hours. Medical examiner James Luke said publicly she had died between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Sinclaire was videorecorded making his statement. The New York Post reported Dr. Luke's statement a week later -- his statement about the time of death.

That was rude of Henry Morgan to interrupt Bennett Cerf like that! Henry might still have been miffed that the show that he was on, I've Got A Secret, was cancelled and was just being his irascible self. Even John Daly was ticked off at Henry, and I don't blame Bennett and John for taking issue with Henry.

@Bigwave2003 -- Not until after Dorothy died did anyone say she mixed alcohol with sleeping pills. When she was alive, some of her newspaper colleagues drank with her, and they noticed she sometimes drank to excess, but that was the extent of it. After Dorothy died she couldn't defend herself. Her widower Richard Kollmar chose not to defend her at that time. We don't know why he kept quiet until he himself died in January 1971.

Was Morgan's comment rude? Sure. Did it succeed as he expected it to humor-wise? No. Was Bennett Cerf one of the most pompous, self-satisfied, egotistical, pedantic twits on television? Yep- and Daly was not far behind him. I'd be surprised if other panelists didn't want to do the same thing. The truth is, when I watch the classic panel shows in reruns, I always look forward to IGAS, but I'm happy to skip WML. Aside from the genuinely funny and earthy Arlene Francis, the panel is a bore.

Fred Allen used to sit where Harry Morgan sat and after Fred's death he was often replaced with other "cantankerous" and "barbed" panelists (or at least trying to play that role) and I think the producers egged them on to be jokers. Even the likable Jerry Lewis told uncharacteristic put-downs from time to time. Don Rickles would have been a natural fit. Regarding Bennett...his lead-ins are often dull or long and unfunny (as demonstrated here)...but then again so were most of the introductions.

I show my students the first clip as illustration of jargon. Notice that Daly uses two prearranged code phrases one meaning someone come up on stage to get this guy off the stage and the other meaning we have an emergency turn off the mikes and lock the cameras into a neutral position. And that's what they do
