Check out Boeing's AH-6i light armed scout helicopter as Experimental Test Pilot, Bill Lee, takes us around the aircraft at the Singapore Airshow 2014 and tells us how its configuration allows it to fit into missions with the Apache AH-64 attack helicopter.

Interesting how the layout of the OH 6 has progressed over the years. Sure it's been stretched, tweekd, and manipulated but the MD and this AH-6i and others still resemble it's Grandfather the OH-6 who served in Vietnam.

Hughes Helicopters really made such very good helicopters. First this one derive from "Cayuse" who served in Nam. Then the "Apache" the deadliest Attack Helio in the world, now both rebadge as Boeing.

Years after the -58 has been dropped.....the "Little Bird" still goes strong.....STILL in use by one of the best helicopter aviation units in the world. I guess Lady Bird Johnson got it wrong (though getting the contract awarded to Bell still got her a metric sh*t ton of profit).

@TheHawkeye61
@TheHawkeye61 5 лет назад
Oscar Pimentel...Believe it it not, most of the noise generated by a helicopter is generated by it’s tail rotor. The four bladed tail rotor was developed on this helicopter in the 1970s by Hughes Helicopters, (later McDonnell Douglas Helicopters, now Boeing Helicopter) where it was called the QTR (Quiet Tail Rotor). Note the same (scaled up) 4 bladed tail rotor on the AH-64 Apache, also designed by Hughes Helicopters in the 1970s.

It does. But when Boeing bought and sold MD, they kept the rights to the ah/mh-6. The OK new that socom still flies is the Boeing model. But MD makes something extremely similar and exports/sells them to other countries including Afghanistan

Could machine guns ever be synchronized to fire through the lift rotor the same way the old WW1 airplanes did ? Why would you want to ? Well something as nimble and quick as an AH-6 with upward firing MG's could conceivably get in underneath ,let's say a Hind? and cause it significant problems . The other reason I ask is that as good as the MH/AH -6 family of helicopters are ,and they are excellent machines , there is always room for improvement ,which is not easy with such a well designed machine as this but nonetheless here' goes :In "my" ideal AH-6 there would be only one crew member (for weight savings ) the pilot /gunner. The craft would have the NOTAR configuration and the landing skids would be hinged to allow them to be folded upwards while in flight such that when the pilot looked out either side window the curved forward portion would be horizontal to his/her view and the reason for that would be to allow about 100 degrees of traverse for the 25 mm Bushmaster chain gun mounted underneath the ship. Another approach at" improving " the AH-6 would be to utilize the basic guts of two AH-6's and amalgamate them into one twin rotor AH-12?Let me explain : I bought myself two plastic model kits (AH-6's of course ) and I also happened to have ,in the same scale , parts from a P-38 Lightning plastic model kit and so after some creative cutting ,snipping ,glueing etc I came up with something that looks like it might work ?It's more a VTOL Ground attack aircraft than helicopter ,provided of course machine guns could be snychronized to fire through the rotor(s) as well as a few other " maybe's " ? But anyhow ty for posting this video and keep em flying

I read your post concerning the AH-6. Well spoken, and I can relate. I used to build models, including rc planed, I used to 'recreate' some of the plastic models. Could you send, post, or whatever, a picture. I don't know how this works because I haven't used it often. Besides. Too many posts involve people telling others how stupid they are. Not sure shooting through the tail rotor would work due to the high rpm's. But the rest sounds cool. Let me know.

I flew oh6-a's with c troop 7/17 in vietnam. Our aircraft were stripped to the minimum and it was amazing the damage we took with so little to hit. In 1971 we switch from a three member crew on board our lead loh's to a pilot and gunner. To save weight we cut our effectiveness by more than j50%

@Sixgun
@Sixgun 6 лет назад
Didn't Boeing buy MD out?
@TheHawkeye61
@TheHawkeye61 5 лет назад
James Brock...Boeing sold most all of its commercial helicopter business to what became MD Helicopters. But under the terms of the sale, Boeing retained certain rights, including its NOTAR patent and the right to service its military customers with the MD500 line. Though, I believe, Boeing buys the hull and certain other components from MD and just stuffs it with other bought components. The Army had something to say about the terms of the sale because the original owners of MD Helicopters were foreign nationals.

Little Birds are definitely awesome folks, but this mock-up is purely for show. FYI to the casual observer. You'd never be able to carry all those provisions and the fuel that Robinson aux "Goliath" tank holds. MGW is the primary factor here dependent on location of operations. Added four blade T/R assy (does help the w&b challenges from the additions up front) and six blade M/R (more weight), the Wescam MX-15 and the added avionics in the nose, plus the thoughts in my head on just how much more power can be squeezed out of that Rolls Royce C-series engine?? srofficial06 - really?? The physics just aren't there.
@Defender78
@Defender78 7 лет назад
they might carry aux fuel but not a full can of ammo for the Dillons, or vice versa, and mb one only Hellfire on the outboard pylon. Depends on the mission req's

Why does Boeing do stuff like put a fuel tank in the back seat and build gunships with all glass and no Armor on anything. Looks like they had the airliner crew build another battle platform! No thanks! Typical Boeing aircraft, can shoot it down with a BB gun!!
