We’ve talked about him in just about every episode so far - it only made sense to have him on as a guest… This week we’re joined by the one and only Greg Beeman: show runner, director, and glue to the early success of Smallville.
Beeman talks about coming into the show during the chaos of Season 1 and remembers moments during the early days behind the scenes that cemented the show in his heart forever. Not only that, but we also review an episode! This week we tackle Episode #16: Stray.
Tom and Michael remember working with Ryan Kelley, the limo stunt that went wrong, and Smallville getting into some pretty brutal attack scenes.

Some versions of Superman purport his invulnerability due to a force field surrounding his entire body that protects him from nearly everything- in this case, Mind control would be included, especially from a weaker psychic (like Ryan) who’s mind control is probably on the weaker end vs a stronger psychic like professor X (hypothetically) . Even though I think X would have a tough time controlling Supe as well! 💪🏽

@@TalkVillePodcast It's called LEAD Star actor PTSD due to working conditions on set productions. You'd think the actor's guild would fight harder but producers and the pay works against it. The podcast by Star Trek Deep Space Nine actor Cirroc Lofton & now deceased Aron Eisenberg give tribute to a couple of crew who died from over 18hr days and the lead actress Nana Visitor(she had a baby & raised 2 kids🥺) & others would wax on like war vets how for the 7yrs 26episodes they lived breathed onset alot barely 2-4hr sleep then back for 3-4am IN SCIFI make up as klingons cardassians etc. So I have major praise and thanks to those who made excellent award winning entertainment and nearly died for my pleasure, same for watching Game of Thrones BTS. And pity for those suffering the same but the writing & production ends up not so good nor entertaining.

So sad Tom cannot remember about working with the actor who played Ryan. I was really looking forward to hear about that, giving the emotion he was bringing by his acting. The way he can cry without making it feel forced at all... I was very moved by his performance. My favorite "small character" of the whole show!

Well it makes sense cuz Tom is not Clark Ryan only appears in two episodes That means they only work together for maybe three weeks and not even all at one time Tom was on the show for a decade. He worked with hundreds of guest stars throughout the shows run, and in later seasons he was directing and producing a lot of the episodes

Ryan was probably the most tragic figure/ character of Smallville. The thing i like the most about Smallville is the focus on family relationships. I always enjoyed Martha / Jonathan dialogs with Clark. You could actually learn something from it. And I did. Also, i like how Kents gave Ryan a warm shelter when he needed it the most. Ryan Kelley gave wonderful performance. My mother is social worker so i'm quite familiar with sensitive subject of this episode. Being different from other S1 episodes, this one is worth of 🌹🌹🌹. Another phenomenal episode that is near and dear to my heart. Had a former religious school student in foster care. After watching this episode in class ( yes, I found a way to tie it in to our curriculum), my usually melancholy student perked up a bit. He was participating in class more and had a positive attitude the rest of the day. He came up to me after class and thanked me for showing this episode. He was so moved by the Kent’s kindness and deep acceptance of Ryan. He said this episode gave him hope that there are kind people out there that will love and accept him❤…It was such a treat rewatching this episode and revisiting that beautiful memory. Talkville is the ultimate gift that keeps on giving. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love you guys ❤❤.

I love the hints of Lex's future in these early episodes. Lex: "In life, the road to darkness is a journey, not a light switch." Ryan: "You should remember that Lex." In other words, it's going to be quite some time before we see Lex in his traditional role as Clark's nemesis. By the way, how did they resist making Clark Kent jokes when Tom put on his glasses? They should have pretended that they could no longer recognize who he was.

Thank you Michael, Tom and Ryan for doing these. i NEVER miss an episode! Simply love them!! This episode is one of my favorite in season 1. The writing is crisp and forever winking at the mythology and making us smile. Jonathan: You always had a soft spot for strays. Martha: The last one turned out all right. At the Talon while discussing the comic book 'Warrior Angel', Lex refers to the hero of the comic book to be from the alien land and is on earth to help people. The plot of Superman is exactly the same Clark: I didn't know you liked comic books. Lex: Are you kidding? A strange visitor from another planet who protects the weak? When I was young he was my idol, not to mention that fact he's bald. I have the whole collection. The Lex and Lionel dance here is perfect. Egos arm wrestling.. Lionel: You think you can find your future in Smallville? I'm your future. Join me, Lex. Join me in Metropolis. How long have you been waiting to hear me to say those words? Lex: I've waited to hear other things from you for a lot longer. I'll return to Metropolis when I'm ready. Lionel: At the head of an army? Lionel: Lex, your performance of late has been... more than adequate. Lex: That sounds dangerously like a compliment. While the Clark and Ryan dance simmers in the background. Ryan cannot read Clark's thought and yet unironically reveals his deepest secret. Ryan: You don't understand what it's like to be different. What it's like to have to hide so people don't think you're a freak. Everywhere I go, I hear people's thoughts. I can't block it out anymore. The cast was solid ALL the way. All performances were authentic and genuine. its one reason why this was such a heart warming episode. And Ryan Kelley. WOW. I remember when this episode aired in the spring of 2002 screaming at the TV .... " SOMEONE GIVE THIS KID HIS OWN SHOW !!" Ryan : I know you like him, Clark, but there's a lot of darkness he keeps from the world. Shivers. that character is talking to us ... whispering a secret WE ALREADY KNOW !! Brillant. Loved this episode. Still love this show. And grateful you guys are doing this podcast. You 3 make it look effortlessly simple and organic. I applauded your production team. they are NAILING this. Another great episode of Talk Ville! I really enjoyed Stray, although after hearing you guys talk, it makes you realise just how tired Tom must have been at the time, to not be able to recall much of it, especially as he did such an amazing job playing a caring big brother figure. My favourite scene was the one where they were shooting hoops together, because it had a real sweetness to it. I thought Ryan was a great character and by the end of the episode, I really wished he was staying, but also, if Clark had ended up with a mind reading wingman, there would have been no show, it would have taken away all the layers and secrets. It was really great to hear Greg's take on the show, and I'm glad we cleared up the puzzle of those fire sprinklers, but it does make me wonder how the show went on for as long as it did, when it was clearly a health and safety catastrophe waiting to happen - I'm glad you all made it out okay! 😆 Thanks Rosey, Tom, Ryan and Greg ❤

Still enjoying these episodes and Greg Beeman was a delight. I know Tom had a hard time remembering a lot from this episode but I did do a video chat with Tom in July and at the time he remembered Ryan trying hard to please, to be a younger brother on the set--he was into it. So sorry to hear you didn't hear "I love you" from your dad, Michael. That touched me. I say it to my son all the time. You guys rock!

Greg Beeman - oh man, this was hilarious and awesome. I read his blogs when he was doing Heroes and I will eat up anything he has to say. He's one of those directors that everyone seems to love. Just listening to him, he knows his sh*t. I'd read his blogs and mentally take notes on the type of director I wanted to be.

This is one of my favourite episodes from season 1. The brotherly bond between Clark and Ryan was so sweet and the episode he returns is the first time the show made me cry my eyes out. It was one of those instances where you wish he could have stayed around and been adopted as his younger brother but since that's not part of the Superman backstory you knew it couldn't happen. Btw I've been rewatching this show since the podcast started and I'm up to season 5 now. It's still SO GOOD! I love it just as much as I did when I first watched it. Imo it just gets better every season and I remember seasons 9&10 were my favourites of the whole show so I can't wait to get there again. Which is honestly such an achievement since most shows go downhill the longer they're on air.

My favorites episode is in season 7 in lionel's funeral and the stare down between Lex and Clark. That is what we had been building towards since the beginning, the moment their friendship was finally irreparable and they became true enemies. The music and they way they look at each and the moment lex walks away is just iconic to me.

yup Commencement was such a great season finale, 1 of my favorites too in fact IMO that's when the series started picking up for me, not the ep itself but the 4th season, eps like Pariah, Blank and even Spirit are some good eps. I actually had to binge the earlier seasons through library rentals but I frankly got annoyed by the romantic triangle tension between Clark and the 2 leading young ladies back then
@TrickyZ33
@TrickyZ33 Год назад
I have 2 points... first, on the kill/save count... 1 person saved, but he was saved 3 separate times (Martha saved him after hitting him with car, and Clark saved him twice (garbage truck and bowling alley)... also, for me this was the FIRST time that it was established that Clark knew that he was actually an alien from outer space (space ship), and not just a human with super powers.

Stray is one of my all time favorite Smallville episodes and to me one of the most memorable, I'd say at least Top 25 maybe Top 20, the Warrior Angel comic, Clark saving Ryan in the compactor, Lex jumping out of the Limo, and the Brother dynamic between Clark and Ryan are all scenes I think of immediately when I think of Smallville I'd say easily 3 🌹 easily a 10/10 I love it.

I get so excited when I see Greg Beeman's name pop up on a show I'm about to watch as I *know* it will be a good one with Greg's influence. I love how you guys remember the chaos and experiences you had to put up with to FILM the episodes and therefore your memory of what actually went on in an episode might be foggy (or totally gone!!). Yet as a viewer who has watched each episode multiple times, I can remember the finer details that you may not, and I feel like I am now privvy to extra knowledge about my favourite show after hearing what went on from *YOUR* side of the screen (if that makes sense!) So awesome, something I do not have with any other show because, well, #ImalwaysholdingontoSmallville Now, #ImalwayslisteningtoTalkVille Thank you so much XXX🥰

Jeannot Szwarc who directed episodes of season 4 and 5 of Smallville directed the feature film "Supergirl" starring Helen Slater (who also voiced Talia Al Ghul in Batman: The Animated Series) that came out in 1984, also directed "Somewhere in Time" starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour that came out in 1984. Literally 4 or 5 degrees of separation of Smallville with the director and actors that have appeared on Smallville lol. Also Tom said the mixing it up with guest stars coming in and leaving the show is just amazing because they brought something wonderful by leveling up the acting.

Elaine from Friends haha its Seinfeld cute. Ah this episode such a treasure memorable scene the garbage truck "you're safe now" line stuck with me that delivery. Wish Warrior Angel comics was a prop you could purchase to read, that look on Lexs face in the limo when Ryan says "he's lying" was so tense you believe he was in danger of being shot and ouch a balling ball in the chest cringe 🌹🌹 and that song at the end last year was my brothers funeral song for the photo tributes as it was his favourite Ryan has a brain tumour that gives him his abilities spoiler.

This was one of the memorable eps and characters from Smallville's earlier seasons... the bond Clark formed with the kid, and despite his power of reading minds was a bit different than some other similar based power, felt more emotionally resonant. Great ep and Ryan was pretty cool but they didn't have him on too many times after this
