This episode had another one of my favorite lines from Lex. Speaking to Clark he says; "When my father dies kings will come to his funeral. When your father dies his friends will come".

This reminds me of another Lex quote "Just remember, my father may try to rule the world, but yours will inherit the Earth." From the season 2 episode Prodigal.

This episode may not be the best, but there some very beautiful lines written and delivered - particularly the scene between Clark and Whitney shooting the basketball. 1 year after this episode aired, my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. 2 years later he was dead. While it was the most painful thing I’ve still ever witnessed in my life seeing him like that, “I’d take the man over the memory any day of the week,” as Clark said to Whitney. After he died, the first thing I did after they came to take him away from our house was watch Smallville. It’s always been there for me and you guys helped get me through that.

Same, I was actually surprised how they glossed over that scene in the podcast. It's so we'll written, and anyone who's ever had a love one who passed away slowly from a disease knows it. I could not help think of my own dad when I was watching that and relating to Whitney's feelings a lot.

It's ironic that the episode Michael and Tom enjoyed the least had them talking about some deep and real stuff like parenting, aging, loneliness, death, medical euthanasie etc. "Reaper" wasn't among my faves episodes from season 1 but I don't think it was a terrible episode, it's enjoyable. It focus on the human experience, our mortality and family dynamics. Very timeless and relatable themes in this episode.

I agree....freak of the week might not have been worth it in this episode, but Smallville very wrongly was identified as kind of X-files show only....those underlying themes and treatments of relationships, life lessons and those extremely talented actors portraying them, were the real essence of SV and took this show on for all those many years it was on air!!
@CorbCorbin
@CorbCorbin Год назад
@@shubhrasarkar Who ever identified Smallville as a kind of X-Files show only? Because of the Freak of the week thing? Comic books used to be like this as well. There were one issue, villain of the month, or week, bi-weekly, etc., or short 3 issue arcs, but always a bigger story, and/or tie ins to events in other books. But, the format of the case/mystery of the week, was from detective and cop shows. Things with supernatural things, got labeled freak of the week, because it was part of the format. Kolchak: The Night Stalker, did this in the 70’s, with a journalist, who tracked down different monsters, ghost, or other supernatural things every week. X-Files gets the credit for that name for it, even though it want the first to do it.

Right its very clear that the discomfort with the subject matter or at the very least talking about their personal views on the matter on a podcast is biasing them here so they weigh the not so very uncommon "huhs" with powers and people appearing and disappearing and all those little Smallvilleisms that yeah, do count against the writing, more heavily than they usually do. This was not necessarily a well executed concept, but the idea of it being a heater or lower is...dubious, Tom himself has talked about how if they make you think about and talk about and invest as much as they clearly are in this episode its clearly a winner.
@charlesjenkins2090
@charlesjenkins2090 Год назад
in fairness, Tom was trying to watch this episode with his kids? Who are like, no older than 6? Which honestly is definitely young for Smallville as a whole and episodes like this clearly make him notice that.
@charlesjenkins2090
@charlesjenkins2090 Год назад
something super noticeable here is how little weight they give, especially Tom who normally does give weight to this, to how many strong one on one heart to hearts there are. They talk about it in the episode but you can tell their discomfort with the overall themes of the plot, whether its bcs they don't like the clear angle the episode has on the issue of euthanasia or they just don't really like seriously thinking about death, make them weigh weaknesses in the central narrative to completely cancel out good character moments.

The caller asking about ashes made me realize it would be awesome if you guys could have someone who did special effects on Smallville as a guest. So many great stunts and effects. I'm always curious about how those things are pulled off.

I enjoyed this episode because it showed how people felt about death. I've known people who, just like Whitney, didn't want to see their loved one in a weaken state. They just wanted to remember the person that they were. I especially liked the end because Whitney got to share a dream of his with his dad knowing that the time was limited. I think it was something that Clark had forgotten in the episode Ryan (won't spoil anything). As always John Schneider and Annette O'Toole were amazing and I always thought they brought out the best acting out of Tom Welling.

The Grim Reaper of death is what I called this episode for season 1 of Smallville. What I enjoyed was the father-son relationship between Clark-Jonathan with the juxtaposition of Whitney and his father as well as Lex Luthor and his father Lionel Luthor. We really get to see Lionel Luthor becoming prominent from this episode onwards helping Lex forging his destiny.

The best part of Reaper was the parent/child theme that ran throughout, starting with Tyler & his mom. She asks him to assist her in death. Whitney is dealing with the looming death of his father. Clark & Jonathan argue over something teenagery but true to life, which is really about spending time together. And Lex & Lionel continue to play petty games with each other. Very different reflections of the same theme.

Definitely agree with you guys. This was not one of my favorite episodes , ( loved the father-son subplot and Lex pointing out to Clark how lucky he is to have such an amazing father). It did however have a positive impact on a former religious school student. He was extremely shy and very socially awkward. He would only talk when we held our weekly Smallville debates. He ALWAYS volunteered to be a team captain. He gave such a passionate speech about why he agreed with Tyler’s point of view about relieving other’s suffering. Brought me to tears. Said he always felt comfortable watching Lex and Clark and identified with the complexity of their relationship. Thank you for letting me revisit this cherished memory through this rewatch. It really is the absolute gift that keeps giving. ❤️🙏🏻. Happy Wednesday. P.S., as for the word mobile, Kristin was pronouncing it the Canadian way.. ❤️🇨🇦

Honestly, I enjoy this episode. I like how the enemy of this episode is a kid who thinks he's doing good, helping old people pass peacefully, and when he realizes he was wrong he's overcome with guilt. The father-son aspect of the episode was great as well. Overall, I'd give this episode 1.3 🌹 Well, is rather easy to understand why he tried to kill Martha, Clark and the other guy. Cause if he let them call the police, he'd be either taken to jail or on the run. Which he doesn't want.

This episode of “Smallville” I loved, it showed that this was a show that could dig deep into the human emotions few people want to discuss, primarily getting old, loneliness, and dying. It’s sad that so many people ignore the elderly, because unless we die young, we will all end up elderly. And dying shouldn’t be feared, because it happens to everyone. How you age and accept life all depends on your outlook. One of the most important qualities to have is a sense of humor. Life can be hard, and if you can’t laugh you’ll be pretty miserable. My fathers mother lived to be 90, and she was hilarious, despite having survived Hitler’s Germany. She took care of her own home until the end, and I seldom saw her without a smile. When she turned 90, I asked her what it felt like, and she replied: “It feels like fucking overtime!”.

It's the idea of not just getting old but also, getting sick and be in a lot of pain that becomes too unbearable for a person in that stage. It's one of my biggest fears which is not so much as aging but aging fast due to chronic or terminal illness. When you feel like you've had it with living like this, you kind of wish it would end by having someone end it for you... assisted suicide. I've never been in this situation and I really hope I don't but it's a serious moral dilemma.

Another great episode, of course. Regarding Whitney, the reason he sometimes opens up to Clark is because he inherently knows he can trust him; Clark being wholesome and good-hearted. Even if some guys are not buddies, sometimes a guy just needs a guy to confide in or open up to. It may be even easier when they are not emotionally close or attached, but are platonic male acquaintances. Whitney is a part of Clark's high school social circle at times and it helps to be on good terms with one's fellow classmates anyhow. Clark is the male friend Whitney needs but would not openly admit to, to maintain peace, and to look out for him at any given moment if he ever needs any thing. By the way, I think Clark cares about Whitney and his overall well being, otherwise, he would not make the effort to go seek him out and chat with him about a difficult subject. Clark knows that Whitney, although a talented athlete, needs hopeful encouragement with this unfamiliar challenge in his home life.

I feel it makes total sense for Whitney to open up to Clark because as a typical "alpha male" type of character, he wouldn't want to be seen as vulnerable by his other male friends, or his own girlfriend. With Ryan on this one, personally liked this episode. With the dog barking sound effect I noticed, thought it was either someone editing the episode having fun or it was done on purpose as an easter egg foreshadowing Clark's super hearing. The sound effect isn't the same dog barking earlier in the episode, so since Clark is focusing his vision to find the dog maybe he's also hearing another dog farther away. Very intense episode where we especially retain the subject of the right to euthanasie and father and son relationship, Jonathan and Clark, Lionel and Lex 💔💔 These rare spontaneous combustion phenomena exist and have never been explained 🤔 It earned us several striking and moving scenes, great episode and podcast again 👏👏💙❤💜

That is so true, I have 3 boys and 1 girl. Once they get past 13, it’s difficult to talk to them. They are not as receptive as they once were. Sometimes just trying to tell them I love them and believe in them I get an eh okay response. Drives me crazy!

'Clap hands to commit suicide' scene. Yeah, I was thinking the same, 'Hasn't his hands touched each other up until now?'. And then I thought of a battery, and that he basically 'closed the loop' on himself.

Great job again. I myself took a lot from this ep. I consider each ep a test or learning experience for Clark and this one had plenty for him. He faced natural death, time(ageing), finality and how important it is to value people and family, because you never know what comes next, good vs legal. He saw a guy with a dangerous power, like him, and the danger he poses with a wrong choice or a mistake, looking at himself in that mirror and how important it is to maintain control. Rose acting was super cool too, Lex being a true bad a$$ and his constant battle with Lionel. I'd give it 1.5 but I get your points, it was difficult to tie some things that were too coincidental to make sense.

This episode hit me harder then ever.. I watched Smallville with my mum here in Norway. , when I was a teen. I cant remember how faar we got into the series. Cuz like other TV shows, it suddenly stoped airing here. Might have been rights or something...idk why really. BUT then I found Smallville again during the pandemic. watched it all. All 10 seasons.loved it interesting more. And during the pandemic, I lost my dad to ALS. He got to be 55 years old only. And Things like this hits me in such a different way after his death... Like Michael i didn't have agreat relationship, the last 10 years of his life. And Ive had myfair trauma from my childhood and the early 2000s. Just now Ive been doing cognitive therapy and working thought it all at 34 years old

By the time you guys are done reviewing the series the death count is gonna be staggering and I got to imagine Smallville has to be voted as one of the most dangerous places to live🤣all jokes aside I'm 47 and i watched this series when it first came out and it was a one of a kind show and I'm sure even rewatching it now and no pun intended ,I may have rose tinted glasses on but I know some episodes are better than others but IMO I don't think any of the episodes were awful sure some of the storylines are a little far fetched but what always won me over was the acting,Tom,Michael, John ,Annette,John Glover,Kristen and Allison always did an amazing job so again thanks so much love the show look forward to it every week👍🏽

Another great podcast, as usual :) Just a point for the differing opinions of the "quality" of the episode. Something both Michael and Tom tend to forget is that this is Ryan's first time actually watching the series so he's coming at this with a fresh pair of eyes and a different perspective on it. It's not necessarily a "bad" episode, It's just not up to Michael and Tom's standards. Also awesome to see a bunch of fellow Canucks calling in! Great job as always guys! Moving on to the nest video now :)

Talking about the topic at 31:00, the best explanation for this that I have heard is that we should,learn to ifentify the good anf bad about how we were raised, and take the good and leave the bad when raising out own children. Much easier said than done. Nice, deep topic. Thanks for touching on it.

I wasn't a huge fan of this episode when it came out, but I did like the interactions between Clark and Jonathan. One thing I didn't get was how Whitney would open up to Clark and not Lana, even though he knew Clark liked her. 😅 Thank you guys for making my Wednesdays!

I like this episode. It felt very american horror story. I like the idea also that it's a meteor freak but, they believe they're using their abilities for good. How many of us have done something wrong, believing it was for the best? The take away from this episode for me is... enjoy life and appreciate the people in your life cause life is very short and beautiful, because it doesn't last. But while it does, I'll be here till the very end. Love this show, loved this series. Much love to you guys.
