Street Debate - Is gender equality a bad motion in Uganda?

Uganda has a pretty poor reputation when it comes to the treatment of women. How did things get so bad and what can be done to change this? That's what 77 Percent reporter Edith Kimani asked her panel of guests for this week's street debate in Kampala. Women play a vital role in supporting their communities in Africa, but they represent only about 15 percent of the continent's landowners. Girls are still often married off at an early age, are far more vulnerable to sexual assault and have a higher rate of illiteracy. But there are women fighting to change things for the better.

Why have some societies failed to treat women and men the same?
@KAIZORIANEMPIRE
@KAIZORIANEMPIRE 4 года назад
Men and women are not equal. We can't treat people the same because we would be undue burden to people that aren't as equipped in a particular aspect. Men can't have children (birth) and women in general can't build houses as effectively as men due to physical impedence

This is so disturbing. 3 year olds and women who are covered up are being raped. Why are we giving excuses and allowing men to act the way they do? Why give him permission to rape any woman/girl who walks around wearing what they want to wear? Gosh!!! This is troubling. We have a long way to go as Africans.

Hi. My name is Clive Sibanda from Zimbabwe. l'm new to this amazing channel and l'm really enjoying it. l'm really surprised to see that we're having the same debates here in Southern Africa as you discuss in most of your shows. This proves that we are one people with a common agenda. l also feel like the solution to our social problems will be to come together and reflect on our cultures and see if we can develop and modernize them so that every member of the society feel included and respected. Now most people in Africa are starting to question the European culture that we follow because it has caused more harm than good

I love your moderation of the debate Edith Kimani. The debate is quite eye-opening to the reality of things. I think that the point of feminism should be to fight against unfair, assultive and irrational behaviour by men towards women. God loves us equally and he made us different and even differently in a way that our our difference bridges the gap in making humanity whole. The agenda that we should be equal needs to be very clear in what that equality is about. I mean, equal in what way? In terms of same payment for same amount or quality of work done by man and woman, I believe that this should not even be an issue to discuss. The pay should be equal. The ones paying women les have a problem! Every one should be treated with utmost respect, no matter who they are.
@DWThe77Percent

This is sad. So basically the Ugandan government has insulted the Ugandan men by sending the message that men are such savage beast in their thoughts and actions. Therfore men can not control themselves when it comes to the Ugandan woman. Wherefore Ugandan, women cover up and protect yourself from men. This is quite disturbing. How about having stiff laws for men and women who commit sexual offenses period. If the African forefathers ( and mothes)saw their woman /men and small children with LESS attire and did NOT commit these crimes, Whats wrong with human beings of today.. What a shame.

I believed in gender equality and supported my wife, she prospered in her career, the moment I left my job to start a business, meaning struggling for a year and a half without success and minimum funds, she left with my kids (less than a year into the struggle), rented a new place, excluded me althogether. Her reason was 'I.m not happy'. But we started off with her being unemplyed for a few years while I took care of everything. Thats my experience with gender equality. I'm now successful and am not willing to get back with my wife (her requests to reunite are falling on deaf ears), I'm focusing only on my children.

Very excellent story here. I think what is needed is not a situation in the west(where in the name of personal "freedom" women have ultimately pursued themselves first and the community second) but of course not a place as potentially backwards as Uganda and the middle east. I guess portray women as protectors too? Not sure how that'd work but it's definitely better than the slop women get fed everyday in the west regarding how "their man" should be treated.
