One of my favorite places, Dinxperlo/Suderwick. One side of the main street is NL, other side is DE. There's an old folks home with a glassed-in passage above the street from one side to the other. Sad that I haven't been able to get there for a year or more because of quarantines.

This video was most likely filmed on a christmas market or a food fair. Please be aware that it would be difficult up to Impossible to find stuff like that in any city anywhere in germany, with a few exceptions, because most bigger cities are pretty much dominated by turkish and arab restaurants and shops. In most parts of major cities like Berlin, Duisburg, Hamburg or Frankfurt for example, you may feel like you were visiting a middle eastern country, as muslims are absolutely dominating the inner cities. This is NOT an overexaguration...

My wife and I made our second visit to Germany last December. It is now easy to see why my grandfather fell in love with Germany and the people, even while fighting his way to Berlin in WWII. The food and historical sites are incredible and the people even more so. I can't wait to go again.
@jamesclark723
@jamesclark723 4 года назад
@For Truth you are correct of course. Americans had to hold back and let the Russians take it. He did however fight all the way from Normandy across to "near Berlin". Along the way he fell in love with the wonderful people of Germany and had a lifelong desire to return and visit when not being shot at.

@@jamesclark723 what was it about the country he fell in love, especially the people? really intereresting :-)
@jamesclark723
@jamesclark723 4 года назад
@@jorgemiller8994 most of the places Grandpa was in had seen heavy fighting and were torn to pieces. Two things that amazed me were his description of how clean and organized the German people were. He said that as they were fighting their way out of the far side of town, the people on the side of town they came in on were already out cleaning the rubble from the streets and trying to start the long process of rebuilding. He was amazed that they were so tough and resilient they didn't let anything slow them down. Another thing that caught my interest was him talking about the trucks that brought up rations, ammo, etc. He would let the ladies of the town have their rations and they would fix meals for everyone, including potatoes, carrots, whatever they might have on hand. I asked him why he wasn't afraid that the locals would poison him. He said he was never worried about that because the people were almost happy to see them coming through as that meant the war was possibly coming to an end soon. When they were ready to move on to the next town they were supposed to burn everything they couldn't carry. Grandpa never did, instead leaving it to the locals so that they, at least for a while, would have food. In a nutshell it was their strength of spirit, even after all that they had been through, and the kindness they showed him and his men that left a lifelong impression on him. He wanted very badly to go back and see Germany after shipping home, but Grandma wouldn't leave the US and he wouldn't go without her. I made my first trip to Germany many years ago, and the second last December. I went there anticipating that I would love it, as my grandpa and I are a lot alike. I found exactly what I was expecting and so much more. I was raised by my grandparents, so part of the trip was for me and part was in memory of grandpa (died of cancer before I went). I had my DNA tested and have learned of a large number of ancestors who were from Germany, and also England & Scotland, with a small number from Ireland and France. I suppose it was in my blood so to speak, although I didn't know it on the first trip. My wife and I laughed a lot because people would stop and speak to us here and there in Germany and Austria. If they approached her they always spoke English. If they approached me they spoke German. I am semi-retired now, so we can come for longer than two weeks at a time on the next trip. I would really like to rent an apartment for several weeks so we have a home base, and rent a car so we can see more than just where you can get on a train. Last December we flew into Amsterdam for our second visit to that great city, then took the train down to Haltern am See to a friends house. He was in Germany twice in his military career and just loved it, and was back over working as a civilian contractor last year. He had a car and we went to a number of Christmas Markets, most notably in Cologne and in Celle. Celle was the type of smaller city/town that I had envisioned when grandpa would tell stories of this time there. When you are born and raised in a country as young as the US it is amazing to see buildings and homes that were in use long before your own country was even officially formed. Mr. Miller, I don't know if you are fortunate enough to call Germany home, but if you live elsewhere and have not been I urge you to make the trip. My wife and I have had the pleasure of traveling in 7 European countries since that very first trip to Germany. We love seeing the historical sites, museums and other attractions of that nature, but the real joy of travel for us is meeting local people. Most Europeans are far more reserved than Americans, and their encounters with many Americans who have come through are that they are rude and arrogant. I can certainly understand why people would be a bit reserved, but we have also found that once engaged in conversation, and once they find out we do have a genuine interest in their lives and learning about the local culture, the vast majority of people open up right away and are both happy and proud to teach you about the country. Our best times and best memories of travel are invariably of the people we have met. The best places to see or eat are always a result of getting off the beaten "tourist path" and to the places they have recommended to us. There is so much more in this world that unites us than what divides us. Happy travels.

@James Clark It is nice to see that you enjoyed your trips to Germany. I was born in Haltern am See and still live in this beautiful little town. I think it’s a good idea to rent an apartment and a car, so you can visit more beautiful areas of Germany. The public transport is okay, but some places are easier to travel by car than taking the train or bus. I think you’re right that most people here a reserved, but when you get to know each other better they will become more and more open. I have to admit that leaving the tourists paths is more interesting because you get to know the local people and they can show you more of the sightseeing’s and restaurants to go to than any tourist guide can do. I hope your next trip to Germany or Europe will be as good as the ones you had (and traveling will be as much fun as before the Coronavirus appeared). I hope my English from school is not to bad and you could understand what I wrote and ment?
