India is my favorite travel destination, especially for photography. The people are wonderful and friendly. The food is amazing...and the monuments are unbelievable. I take a variety of shots, both candid without people's knowledge and with their permission. A simple smile and gesture to your camera goes a long way. While India is filled with heartbreaking poverty, it is also overflowing with unimaginable beauty and dignity. Often times when I am telling stories of my many travels throughout India to friends and acquaintances, I find it hard to maintain my composure...as it is a place beyond description and steeped in emotion. If India is on your list of places to visit, I urge you to make it your priority. You and your soul will be amply rewarded.

I visited Kolkata (from UK) two years ago and found the people were almost all very happy to be photographed, especially in the fish and veg markets, and also the area where they make religious figures. And when my wife came out to join me, we had a lot of people want to take selfies with us....the tall white people LOL It was humbling just how friendly people were, and in Darjeeling also. Can't wait to go back to India another time.

I had a homeless guy get in my face when I was taking pictures of the birds near him. I got upset and told him that I can take any picture I want and “I’m putting my music back on now” and ignored him to his face. He got mad and walked away. I also recently had someone that worked at a bar that I was at that my camera was making people uncomfortable. I was the only one in there dancing and talking to the DJ ... everyone else was just sitting on the bar stools. I also got upset at that time and told the guy “nah” when he told me to put my camera in my backpack. I then ignored him and kept taking photos .... he walked away and didn’t do anything.

More shy.... I shot some candids on Thursday. One group of three, two men and a woman, the woman decided to pose for her friends and I jumped next to them to shoot her too. I got shy though and didn't show them the images (next time I'll remember to do that.) It's funny too when shooting candids, when one of the subjects sees you and when you look at your images later, they're looking right at you! (I think it works better though if you have a French accent, LOL.)

Dear Pierre, I really love all the energy coming out of your videos! With regards to questions could you please clarify the legal framework that covers you with regards to taking photos of people Inc. children in public places? I guess whatever happens in France must be the same throughout the E. U. (?) (From a legalistic only point of view).

I shoot almost exclusively street portraits of strangers. For me it is not a matter of feeling comfortable or not. I don't like set up shots only ones that are spontaneous, that are an extension of what I see with my eyes. I get three types of shots. Ones I capture before people become aware of my taking their picture. These are usually the ones I like the most. The second are when people see me and react before I can take the shot. I like many of these shots as well, because people's reactions are spontaneous and they are all different reflecting who that person is at least at the moment of capture. And finally there are people who see me, want their shot taken and pose. On very rare occasion I take and keep a photo like this, but I have to find such a subject(s) very exceptional. And finally my favorite subjects are the ones I find toughest to get. Those are shots of young men going for bad and young women going for sexy. They typically don't like their photographs taken. I can and do get negative feedback. So the tension involved naturally makes me feel uncomfortable. But the shots I get are worth it. They are very, very expressive and I see very few like them.

Thanks for this video! I love to see good street photos, but I myself feel so uncomfortable and shy, so I’m still not taking street photos a lot. There are some great tips in this video. Waiting for the scene to happen sounds like something I should try. Too often when I do dare to take a picture because I get too exited to feel the shame, I’m often too late to shoot and the moment’s gone. I like the photos where people are unaware of the camera best. Although I also really love the posed photos when the people in it have a special look. Like very old people, or very colourful people. But to me those photos feel like a mix between street photography and portrait photography. I’m sure if I were to travel to India, I’d love to have some of these portraits in my photo album as well. What I’m more comfortable to shoot at, is at events where people know their pictures can be taken and are fine with it. In those situations I find myself brave enough to even ask if they want to pose for me. And yes, I’m always happy to show them the photo I took. Often they are proud and content to see they look nice in the picture. I’ve even been at a local music festival many years ago, totally unprepared to take pictures of the public, when I encountered a couple of girls posing for me without me even asking! They thought I must be for a newspaper and they were eager enough to find themselves on the cover of it... 😂 I felt so sorry to tell them I was a total nobody. They’re reply was even more heartwarming. They told me with a happy giggling smile “oh well, in that case you can make this the wallpaper on your computer!” I recently bought a 35mm lens and find it a real treasure! Great to know you use a 35mm lens too!

Pierre T. Lambert apparently your video was a real boost! About an hour after watching, I decided to go for a walk on the beach. With the camera in my hand ready to fire, I found myself getting more and more comfortable and before I knew it I was snapping pictures of people in stead of the sea 😊. And like I said, sometimes the moment is just too precious to not take a picture. Like those two older ladies plunging in the waves for a skinny dip 🙈😁😍 The 35 mm lens was perfect as it created enough distance to not make it awkward and intrusive and since they were already in the water, I only saw them at the back, which also was a pro for me. It wouldn’t have done the picture any good if there had been more of their bodies visible. Anonymous is what I wanted for them to stay. So again, much thanks! I’m totally going to catch up with the other videos you made!

Ohhhh you just made my day! That's so cool! Keep crushing it! :) ps: one day someone will say no or be upset - say "sorry, no worries" and remember the 85% that said yes and loved having their photo taken - I always remind myself of that after someone says no. :)

Hi Pierre, another great video, I’m a huge fan! I’m also an a7R3 shooter, And I am hoping for some lens advice. My longest lens so far is a Sony 24- 105 f4, and I’m considering the 70-200 f2.8 and the 100-400 GM. I shoot mostly portraits and landscapes, but sometimes the occasional wildlife and some sports, so I’m wondering if I need a lens as long as 400. Your thoughts?
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 6 лет назад
Hey P F! Thanks for watching man! I'd save up on the 100-400 and crop 100% or 200% the images. Because the few times you'd really need a 100-400 you can rent it until you "Really" need it often. Those lenses are super heavy! :) Hope this helps!
@goodguy4119
@goodguy4119 6 лет назад
Pierre T. Lambert - Hey Pierre, thanks! I think that’s great advice, and I agree, I tried the 100-400 this weekend, and it’s bulky as well as more reach than I typically need. I hope you don’t mind just one more question, what do you think of the 70-200 f2.8 as a next logical step from the 24-105?

To all the street photographers that are not from India - if you've found that people are very friendly and approachable - please note that this might not be similar to the experience a native street photographer would have. Localites can easily recognize that the photographer is an outsider and this lets them to believe that the photographer is a friendly and a trust-worthy person who is here to explore India and tend to be open and approachable when asked for impromptu photos. This scenario can turn a 180 when the photographer is an India - and since an Indian isn't outsider, localites think this person has an ill-motive or is a media person etc since acc. to them he can't be a tourist in his own country. These things playout subsconsciously rather quickly and lead to two different experiences - hence please keep that in mind when you guys are making such videos on providing TIPS on how to be a street photographer - it all depends on luck, some confidence, thick skin to not mind negative experiences, good personality, and most of all the subject's perceptions and his comfortability.

How do you set up your camera settings? Looks like you keep your aperture around f/5.6+. Do you often look through EVF or monitor when you shoot?
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 6 лет назад
Hi!! I usually shoot at 2.8. Monitor if camera too low. EVF is I don't have to twist my body haha. Have a great day. See you in the next episode ;)

I´m gonna be traveling to India in the summer with my indian boyfriend (which I hope will be a plus) and I think my biggest problem in street photography is that I want it to be super authentic but on the other hand this is hard when you want to shoot up close and have to tell people that you´re photographing them. Anyone here who could help me on which is the best way to approach this issue? Thanks a lot! :)

Not all people like to have their photo taken, it depends. Please don't generalize it since travelling photographers might get into trouble.

People do not like to be pictured so for realistic pictures you need lots of distance like 300 mm lens

👍Nice compliment to your vid from Indonesia on same subject a few months back. Enlisting a local photog is a wise move when logistics, timing, and trust level permit - never know for sure who will show up. Blue t-shirt for the blue city - nice. 👕 Bird poop is good luck, unless it lands on your lens - watch out for the acid in that case. Good tip on layering and selective focus, as long as it doesn’t distract from the composition (e.g., make the pic too busy). Some folks take the “show photo” tip a step further by making/giving a small print on the spot - ever use one of those small printers (might have NFC, making the job easier for JPEGs anyway)? Say, Pierre, I read about a super photog event, now thru Oct. 7 - Indian Photography Festival by Light Craft Foundation in Hyderabad - 550 photographers from 52 countries. Will you be one of the star attractions, or an attendee?
@Pierretlambert
@Pierretlambert 6 лет назад
Hey Paul!! Thanks for watching! Yeap always wanted one of those small printers!! Gotta get on that one day... No I'm not part of that event, I'll be back in France then. Maybe I should email them :D Have a great day and see you in the next episode!
