Hi Everyone, and welcome to this month's Q&A video. As I mentioned in the video, apologies for the gap since my last street photography video - due mainly to the fact that I've been under pressure with a deadline to finish my next book (details in the video!).
In the video I talk about producing zines and the company I use is Mixam (www.mixam.co.uk).

Another way to see whether or not there is improvement is to compare recent photos with photos taken 3 or 4 years previously.

I love the critique approach for improvement. In my “day job” as UX Director for a designer team, weekly design critiques and reviews go a long way as the designers share their work and are growing as we all review and advance the our designs. Now to find “like” photographers. ☺️📷

I feally think it's the best way to improve - but it needs to be 'quality' critique from people who understand street photography - not always easy to find!

Wonderful advice and concur entirely with the views expressed. To take just one example regarding post processing . Like you, I know I can do lots to an image to lift it and create a wow factor to it. However, I am too busy to indulge in this . I keep things very simple . I process all images from the camera in my iPhone in Snapseed . This is to ensure that images taken on the phone or the camera have a resemblance to each other. Next, a few clicks and I have a keeper or not. I am not going to labour on a image that does not stand the test of time in my opinion - and it is my take on that which prevails . For choice of whether to shoot BW or colour I have a set up on the camera that enables me to visualise images in real time as BW and that helps greatly in my projects . Finally , I produce photo books of my favourite images and circulate them as gifts . I hope that helps a few to decide how they might approach processing and editing of their images. There is no single right or wrong way as such, anymore than there is a right or wrong camera or lens to use. Just know your gear and work to its sweet spots . But most of all, enjoy your craft and share its beauty with others as often as you can. Some say that photography is perhaps the greatest art form in the visual form, but I am not qualified to qualify that. And thank you once again for a thought provoking and useful video . I enjoyed the video very much .

great topic and conversation in this video. I do agree with your last answer about absolute concentration, though it is hard to try to not be listening to music or in my cast a podcast while walking around. My personal frustration is sometimes i feel that wearing a mask around makes it much harder to speak and hear one another when talking to the person I ask permission to photograph from time to time, note I was not wearing any earphone at the time as well.

Hello Brian, happy to see you again here on youtube, I appreciate your work very much. I'm also very reluctant to use presets when I'm editing my photos.But I think that with any Raw conversion you'll have to decide on some kind of preset, especially if you use a Fuji camera with its impressive choice of "film simulations". Am I right?. So another question: what film simulation do you use most frequently when using a Fuji?

Would you have a Q and A sometime on home printing of photos Brian please? I’m looking forward a cost-effective means of doing this. My Epson printer, which I haven’t had for long (few years), is clogged and no longer can be fixed. It seems that printer manufacturers charge an absolute fortune for the ‘pleasure’ of using their printers and the joy of home printing is lost as printers fail (clogging, chips fail) and chipping of cartridges deter us from finding cost-effective ink replacements. In effect printer manufacturers (Epson, canon) are attempting to monopolise ink replacements to guard their market, which I don’t see in other areas of commerce. I know there are non-OEM ink providers out there but I’ve had some issues with potential issues with that. CIS printers are another option but are they a reasonable cost? I don’t know, as they cost a lot upfront. Any thoughts re the current home printer environment? Thanks. Enjoying your regular posts.

My name is Eli I’m from the US. I’ve been taking photography seriously for a little over a year. I’ve found that street is what I like. But I’m not very connected with other photographers. I connect through social media and such but not someone that I can actually sit and talk photos with. How can I get better, “alone”? I watch videos and look at other people’s work but I don’t have that human connection. By the way, your videos are quit helpful.
@StreetSnappers

Hi Eli - maybe join some online street photography groups or clubs? I think there are lots in the US and it may be a good way to engage in a more meaningful way than just using social media. Good luck :-)

Hi Brian, thanks a lot for the amazingly useful tips and insights! Just a question that I'm not sure if it was already answered: you often suggest auto ISO and I understand your reasoning, I agree that modern cameras handle really well high ISO in terms of noise. However, I think the reduction of dynamic range at high ISO is always an issue, shouldn't we take that into account? One might lose details and texture that can't be recovered in post..
@StreetSnappers

Thanks Christoforos, good point and I think you’re right. Though if I’m honest I personally wouldn’t change the DR settings as ‘perfection’ isn’t really important to me. But maybe I’m just lazy! :-)

Do you think joining fb street photography groups are a good way of measuring your improvement, measured by the amount of likes you get against other pics on the same group ?

@StreetSnappers 3 года назад
Usually, no! Most of the work on the FB groups I see isn't very good yet it still gets lots of likes. I don't think it's a good measure and you're better joining up with a group of 'real' people to critique each other's work in a more structured way.
