Took the new Street Triple RS out for a test ride, thought I'd give it a quick comparison to its big brother, the Speed Triple R. Be sure to leave a Like & Subscribe! Follow me on Instagram
Thanks a lot for this comparison which most needed! Have ridden both and totally agree with you. The SPR is much more fun since there is response instantly even at low rev which still lacking on the STR. And as you say it all depends on what one likes the most which makes it totally subjective. Keep on doing this non-commercial non-sales-directed reviews!
true! it is about 30kg heavier than the current RS. Still, as Double D stated on his video, the feeling of driving a bulkier machine, at least for me and him, is more fullfilling despite the fact of the specs on paper. Heavier, isn't always bad. Have had both, the previous Street and the new Speed and torque is better for a street use than end speed. Have read reviews about the new RS from owners and they compared with a MT-09 and not far off from the previous 675. Maybe what we see on reknown reviews is prepaid marketing. Money talks. I happen to have a Zx6R too... and even though after 6000rpms the ninja destroys the speed triple, i just rather ride the speed every day of my life, which i happily do. Again, this is my position Jayden. We all perceive life in different ways.
@Kaisser good to hear that point of view. Triumph always wins in British tests & BMW in German tests. I wonder why ;-) My Ninja only weighs 186kg wet & has 118whp. I have tried many bikes & none have convinced me.
Completely agree with what you said. I took both out for a test ride and bought the Speed R and added a quick shifter. It's an absolute weapon and I have no regrets!
Hey Michael! how does it go with the QS? can you make a video of how it performs? hopw not asking much but am tempted to get one for my speedy as well...!
I don't have a decent camera so a video isn't an option I'm afraid. The quick shifter is awesome though and makes the bike more fun to ride. It is a bit clunky between 1st and 2nd so tend to use it less between those gears but it's buttery smooth when shifting up in all other gears. I tend to shift up at around 8k RPM and it is effortless to change gear. It also feels faster as you can keep the throttle pinned throughout. I'd certainly recommend it and will always have one on future bikes.
I've got a 2016 Speed R with a quickshifter and Leo Vince 3 into 1 lowboy system. The bike is special, feels so planted. With the quickshifter its amazing. Got a STR also, which I use on track, its sometimes difficult knowing which to take out......
Great comparison!. I don't think I've ever seen one on RU-vid comparing the two one after another like this ... brilliant!. I agree with you about the Speedie and I have a 2013 Speed Triple R. Love that thang. I test rode a 17 Street Triple RS and it was an awesome bike also. nice and flickable and very comfortable with good power. I wanted something that ripped a little harder than the Street 3 but was also flickable so I bought an XSR900. now I've got a big brute of a bike with lots of torque that pulls and a smaller more flickable bike with lots of torque that rips. they really compliment each other well. I'm stoked!
Great vid, just short of a year ago I tried the 2016 street R and the speed R Matt Graphite. I left the lot with the speed and have never regretted it. As you said, it's more planted and solid. Those were exactly my thoughts when I made my decision. Finally, yes the torque is just mental in the best way imaginable. Cheers...
Test rode the Speedy at the back end of last year and the one thing it left me with was it felt it had all the benefits of the Street, but with more power. I haven't test ridden the new Streety though, so couldn't compare the current versions. I do think the 'R' model will have more torque with less top end, so it'll be interesting to see how those two compare when they're out.
Hello Dubble D, I have a question about the amount of leg room and comfort comparing Speed with the Street 765. I recently rode both motorbikes and after the change from Speed to Street I had the feeling that there is more leg room on the Speed and position on the Speed is more comfortable. What are your feelings when you were riding 765 street?
I was going to sell my 2012 Street Triple and go for the 2017 Speed Triple R - thank god I waited for the 2018 model! Got the Speed Triple RS - best bike I’ve ever owned.
Dubble D Do it, man! The new electronic nannies alone justify the upgrade, imho. The cornering ABS seems to defy physics and it already saved my ass in a corner I’ve done hundreds of times that suddenly had a massive hole in it. The power upgrade and the TFT screen are also great. Only thing I didn’t like was the matte paint with the red stripes - it made the bike look cheap and scratched very easily. It’s now on the shop for a nice, glossy black paint job!
João Soares to be honest the electronics side of things don’t interest me that much - maybe the keyless start, but that’s it - it’s the engine that would sway me! Besides mine is definitely lighter, especially once I get a particular mod done next month 😈
Dubble D I got a light lithium ion battery (almost 6lbs weight saving) and I changed the front sprocket (1 less tooth) for even more oomph. In a couple of months I’m getting a set of Dymag CA5s - stupidly expensive, but another 5lbs weight savings. Once you start fiddling with these things it’s hard to stop...
The Speed may feel faster and is on a long straight but a recent Triumph track day at Snetterton over 90% of riders were faster on both the Street R and RS than on either of the Speed Triples. as for your complaint about the electronics cutting in try it on race mode.
I’m a first timer on your channel. Brilliant Brilliant review. I’m test riding a speed triple R tomorrow. With purchasing it,very high on the agenda.😂👍👍👍
Took the speed r out yesterday. OMG.I haven’t ridden a bike in 6 years. On a bike I’ve never rode before. What a bike.had the tyres over to the edge. Needless to say I bought her😂
Great test comparison, confirmed and helped me pick the 1050cc.Better on a windy day or passing a juggernaut.More power more weight.Stuff Ai robot run bikes.
Hey dubble d, have you tried the speed RS yet? I’m looking at buying one over the next few weeks and still thinking a street RS might be a choice due to saving £££
Have you tried the STR 09 model, i do not know why, triumph changed the gearing on the STR 2012 models and for that reason I never bought a later model STR. Every time I test road a newer model and road home on my 09 STR I decided not to buy a newer bike, I love it so much I waited until I could afford 2 bikes, and now have a S1000RR PP, which is perfect for me, just wonder if you have tried the BMW, if you like sticking it in Race mode, try Slick mode on a RR and I'm sure you will love it, except the fluffing around taking the plug out can be annoying.
Micky Star I haven't tried an 09 STR, but the other half had a 13 plate one which was a good laugh. I really like the 765, I just prefer the silliness of the Speed. I'd love a BMW... I'd also love to earn BMW money 😂 thanks for watching
Understand totally as ive just got myself the streety 675r, Great when its smooth and on the track but the Speed is a better Road bike all round when it gets bumpy and for passing scores of cars in an instant
Been waiting on a head to head comparison. Really wanting to get one of these in the near future and been leaning speed but haven't test ridden either yet. Thanks for the vid and love the accent and casual cursing, you sound like me on a ride (American accent though). lol
nice revieq and comparison, i didnt read all the comments but seemed like you didnt ride it in race mode? would have made a difference to power of the bike.
JimmyGlat apparently when I left the dealership it was in race mode according to the sales guy. Even then, for me I prefer to have the power delivery that the speed has on a naked sports. The Street is so similar to the Daytona!
I'm new to your channel. I was looking through your vids to see if you had said why you swapped the Speed for the Daytona. Was it a track thing or did you find the Speed too heavy?
Dougie it was neither actually, had to make a cull on my finances. Unfortunately the Speed was what got the chop - I would of picked it over the Daytona. I will own another one, hopefully soon! I'd love to of tracked my Speed R
It’s not a fair comparison as you never got to ride the 765 on track mode tho. When on it power is pretty much already delivered when you twist for it, it just explodes and takes the f**ck off as quick as Tyrone’s dad did. The anti-wheelie controls are turned off, TCS and ABS are also quite toned down (turning electronics completely off on the dashboard takes about 10 seconds of your time). Plus it gets the trail shock as hard as I usually am when riding it. Give it a chance bro it’ll keep surprising you for sure.
True for the video, but had a go on one since - the 1050 just has more grunt. There’s a video on my Instagram of a race spec 765 having a drag race down a straight at Donington with my 1050, I’m pulling on him - and that’s a race spec’d bike with more horses than standard. The 765 is still a wicked machine, but doesn’t top the speed for me.
I bought a 2012 speed triple last month. Coming from a Daytona 955i. Love it to bits. Just have to : add clipons add adjustable rear sets stiffen up suspension change levers / grips add TOD map to ecu and it will be the BoMb!
Looking at buying either one of these in 3 weeks. Test drove the Speed Triple RS and didn't even bother with the Street Triple. The Speed just grabs you by the balls. It's an unbelievable machine. I fell in love with it in the first 3 minutes of my test drive.
Street might be a good 2nd bike, after you already have a Speed. If you can only have one, just keep test-riding, thinking, imagining, studying, and analyzing until you choose the Speed. If you choose the Street, you will likely regret it. I faced a similar decision back in late 2009 and wisely chose the 2010 Speed Triple Anniversary Edition over the Daytona, after lengthy discussions with a very experienced and thoughtful salesman at the shop. It still runs like a top and continues to bring me great joy.
Bjørn van Rumpt not an easy one - both are better than an MT-07, but you'd need to try both. The Speed is a brute with super low down punch, the Street is effectively a naked sportsbike for the track
I tried this out the other day. My first time on a triple and i am sure it wont be my last. That quick shifter is so smooth. I did feel every bump on the road though. Loved it :)
Greetings from the US in Texas, nice review, have you ridden the street twin yet? just bought it over a Harley street rod, never looking back. I'll only buy Triumph from here on out.
I found the Triple RS engine a little flat tbh beneath about 8k. If you open it up full throttle and rev the nuts off it, it flies. And the sound of that engine is intoxicating. It revs so easily and freely. Must have been the electronics on yours kicking in as they didn't on mine. Had it in track mode as well which was very on the money. I too found it light, too light perhaps, but the handling is still brilliant. Nice suspension I could ride it all day, well I did for a full half a day back at start of April. Sadly my Triumph dealer isn't planing to get a demo Speed Triple R :@( but has a brand new one sitting in their showroom and it does look cool, muscular as you say. Would love to ride it but they won't let me. How they going to sell any then? Like you I prefer the low down grunt coming from the 1050 engine. I have a Sprint ST 1050 '08 and the extra weight I prefer although my Sprint would still be a lot heavier than the much newer Speed Triple R which is why I want to test ride a new Speed Triple R - Ohlins suspension and Brembos, but haven't been able to find one yet :@( The new Street Triple RS felt very very chuckable, almost too easy as you say, which is not a bad thing, I'm just used to a heavier more planted bike. I too felt the Street RS was like a sports bike minus full fairing with sit up and beg bars. Personally I like the colour scheme but what do I know? I can't even get the same coloured socks on in the morning and wear purple shirts ;@). The quality could be a little better with some of the switch gear. I wonder how it would look after a couple of years? Didn't get on with all the buttons for selecting modes and hated the positioning of the little horn button tucked away underneath which is no longer red and not in a prominent position easy to reach with your left thumb. I kept hitting what must have been the mode button instead of the horn. But apart from that it was good. Mirrors were good, no vibration at all. Engine so smooth. Would love to ride a Daytona. Are Triumph killing them off? Also if I rode a Speed Triple R and loved it, bought one and then found next year they added a TFT screen, I would be gutted as the one on the new Street Triple RS is the bees knees. The brakes on the Street Triple RS that I test rode were awesome, but then again it had only done 200 miles. The other dilemma I have is I liked the Thruxton R as well. Totally different, but I liked it. But Triumph want too much for it at £12k. Want to have a go on an MT-10 as well but my Triumph/Yamaha dealer doesn't have one for demo. Can you believe it, no MT10 for demo? I think the MT10 would rip my arms off in comparison to the little Street Triple RS. The Speed Triple R has 140bhp iirc and the Street Triple 121bhp. I think like you I need a bike with more low down torque with heavier more planted feel such as the extra weight of the 1050 engine, although as you say the new Street Triple 765 RS is still damn good. Quick shifter on the one I rode was really good as well. I think next year Triumph will put the price above £10k as last year the MT-10 was below £10k and Yamaha have put it up to £11k this year. Devils. :@( Hope Triumph aren't killing off the Daytona as I wouldn't mind one of those. If they are, maybe a good low mileage one of these would be an option. How does your Daytona compare to the new Street RS? Anyway nice review even with all the swearing ;@)
Alex Morgan I think I'd still have the Daytona over an RS, it did feel a little flat like you said below 8k. It is a fantastic bike, but for me there's two bikes from the same manufacturer I'd pick over it - Daytona and the Speed R
Thanks Mark, but Cheltenham as nice a place as it is, is a bit of a long way to go as I live in the East. Webb in Peterborough is my nearest Triumph/Yamaha dealer. Thinking of trying the Triumph dealer down at Great Dunmow in Essex. Bit busy at the moment with other things so testing bikes is low down on the list of priorities :@(
Well, i've ridden both and bought the R. The R has more lowdown torque and a much smoother, linear delivery. Plus, if you switch of the traction control, you have a real hooligan wheelie monster. And it's so awesome in corners and so light, man, it's the best bike i've ever ridden. And i've ridden everything from cruisers to super bikes, enduro to adventure. My previous bike was a Suzuki gsxs 1000. Way more powerful, but a lot les fun. I've tested the mt 09 as well. A lot of fun in a straight line, but the cornering felt so uneasy. If you can't tell, i'm really happy with the Triple R.
Hi Cueball Can You write why You sell Suzuki Gsxs 1000 and buy Triple R ??. Suzuki have K5-K8 engine lots of torque, less weight than Triple R etc etc.... I am selling my 2008 Busa and want to purchase nake bike. Gsx s and Triple R are on my top list. I also test ride Street RS but I feel that RS is to small for me (I am 182 cm and 90 kg weight). Best Regards Pawel
Trumph has done a great job in pricing. All models are like 1000 to 1500$ more in the pricetag but the specs are much much better. THe pricing between the R and the RS is so small that it's tough to know if you would like to spend just 1500$ for racetrack specs. I ended up ordering the R due I weight 90kg and 6foot tall but didnt felt that the RS specs were important to me. THe R has plenty of goodies
Nice comparison. StreetTRS has the torque higher up the rev range, the StreetTR seems a better road bike, more usable mid range engine map. Think your brakes must have crap on them for the M50 not to be slowing you down. I get the SpeedTR and looks lovely but it's starting to get near the KTM 1290 Super Duke R money.
Ed Wilson I’d agree on that first bit. As for the Speed, it’s still about £2000 cheaper than the KTM, definitely corners better, definitely looks better... in my humble opinion of course! Although I do like the Superdukes... a lot!
You know Mr.D...do you watch F1? As a finnish person I do see some similarities with you and Kimi Räikkönen. You have this beautiful dry sense of humour, no bullshit, straight to the point touch. I also love your accent. 5/5.
4Matic asshole ironically I’m a big F1 fan! And also a big Kimi fan! Gutted he’s going to Sauber next year, personally he’s been a better shout than Vettel this year, just age isn’t on his side :( thanks bud, stay tuned ;)
Wow, got an answer from one of my idols! Well, we'll see what's going to happen. I hope Kimi will bring Sauber back to midlle class at least. Thanks a lot.
Off to ride the RS and the Speed R on Saturday. I ride a '08 speed and am thinking that now that I've been on a 1050 I will be a bit underwhelmed by the Street RS. I know exactly what you mean when you talk about the Speed. It's just so 'sure' of itself when cornering........like it doing it all in its own. It's mighty meaty! And the torque is bloody beautiful! 👍🏻 Nice review. If only they did the Speed R with that TFT display eh?!!
Triumph are properly on point with all their bikes these days I'm hearing amazing things about this street triple 765!! I was never a Triumph guy until i took the plunge in 2016 and brought my Daytona 675R and I'm properly converted now!! Triumph making us brits proud 🤗. Anyway how's your speed coming along have you got it all fixed up again now? Adam 👊
Dubble D brilliant mate happy and safe riding brother oh loving your buddies 30th anniversary Zx10r mate ive a real thing for Kawasaki especially the 30th anniversary 👍🏻
I traded my 2016 Speed R for a 2018 Street RS and couldn't be happier. The heft of the Speed is ultimately what did it in. The Street RS is so much quicker in the corners and it pulls just as hard out of them with the engine spun up a bit.
kawabunga660 that's fair enough buddy, as I say at the end - it's totally subjective, the Street RS is still an awesome bike! I just personally prefer the new Speed over it. Was your Speed R the same as the one in the video? Or one of the last gen ones?
kawabunga660 for most riders the capabilities of both triples exceed their own. For the Striple it indeed does mean you need to keep the revs above 8000rpm for similar serious acceleration out of corners as my S3R. nJoy your triple!👌
Great comparison, I've been waiting for one of these. I think the speed has perfect power and fueling as is but it could use a tiny bit more of weight reduction. Engine is perfect for everyday road use.
Eric Hoover from what I hear a low boy exhaust seems to hit the spot with them. Would love to have a 2016 one with a low boy and a set of PVM wheels from my 2012 Speed R! Would be an animal!
There's got to be a new Speed coming next year. The thing I don't get with the new Street, is that's it's powered as a super sports but without the fairing, meaning it wants to rev high but you have no cover. For me an upright bike need lots of low down torque. Try the Tuono, you won't be disappointed!
Jim 86 yes, instead of the Speed just jump right in on the Tuono, IMO Tuono and Superduke are miles ahead of the Speed. Add another 20hp on the speed and i'll consider it.
Grexx put a low boy can on the Speed and I reckon it'll give the other two a run for their money, cornering wise the Speed would get the pair of them. I've had a go on a couple of dukes and they're wavey in turns. Haven't tried a Tuono though
Jim 86 may i ask why?, its like apples to oranges. I've had my STR since 2013 and want to upgrade to either a Tuono or SDR but not sure if i want to give up my STR yet.
Back when I bought my Speed I had the same feelings after a b2b ride on both the ST3 (675) and the SP3. Street was meh, Speed was fuck yeah! That lazy, smooth low down torque made it a much better bike for me. When the '16 SP3 was announced I was hyped and would have bought one but IMO the step in power was a huge let down. Given the competitors all sit ~160bhp the new Speed has been left behind at under 140. Ended up with a 1290R when KTM blew the price on the last of the '16 bikes. Kept the SP3 though and still enjoy it, although I just spanked 2nd gear which is a shitter! Be interesting to see if Triumph will update the SP3 with the new style dash and give it the bump in power it needs for 2018.
Thanks for this. Down here in New Zealand we have plenty of twisty mountain roads that make you work hard. I love the Street, it is so perfect for here. Enjoyed your review , and will make a point to try the Speed.... still waiting for the 765 to arrive, I think Aussie is taking them all.... why ? their roads are straight, send them over the ditch for us to try too.
Great real world review, instead of glossy mag race track based journo arse licking. I agree the new 765rs looks tacky with its go faster decals (even though they're subtle) And red wheel rim tape is so early 2000's. Solid colour is timelessly stylish like it's big bro. Engine wise the 765rs is clearly aimed more at track than street. Power packed at the top end daytona-esque. Yeah, it'll work fine on roads but you need to wring it to put it in its element. Whereas the Speed is more of a real world, road based bike. Low down excesible torque that instantly gratifies and makes road riding more fun. Just needs a LCD clock update/ quick shift to cut it with its competitors. Then again stay retro with a big sweepy rev guage and time your clutch less upshifts for an oldskool buzz! Again great review my triple thrashing friend :-)
Both great bikes but the 1050 needs the next step up now. The fact the 765 is 'nearly' the same outright performance says it all. A new 1050RS making 160+ please to mix it with the other hyper nakeds
I was just about to pull the trigger on a 2017 Speed Triple (coming from a Daytona track bike and Street Triple daily rider) but then I discovered the Aprilia Tuono 1100 RR........ food for thought!
Nice review, I also found the street a bit twitchy due to its light handling. The streets riding position is so awkward it really slides your manhood to the tank. I would go for the Speed too
Though, you seemed to ride considerably faster on the Street RS and also rip it harder on the corners. Sure the Speed R is more stable, as it has less aggressive geometry. It has to do with what you are looking for.
Dubble D, thanks for the reply. I have a Daytona myself, will have to test the street and speed and see what I think. Thinking of a change and don't really want any less power than I have now. Also would be great if they updated the clocks on the speed as the new one on the street does look really good.
BelgianTriumphRider see when I pulled on them they didn't stop very well, but I reckon it's where they had been sat in the rain and not used. The Brembos on the RS are a lot better than the Nissins on my Daytona
Dubble D this is the first time I could say anything bad about Brembos. They squeaked like crazy. I thought maybe they just needed to warm up but they never quit.
Weight difference between Triumph its latest nakeds 765 and 1050cc is 26kg/16%. Whereas the new 1050cc S3 has 35Nm(+45%!) more torque and 17bhp(+14%) more power than STR-RS. Ergonomics of latest S3 2016-2017 model is almost same as STR (i.e. nimble, no understeer anymore). On paper is power-weight ratio close: S3@0.73/0.58 vs STR@0.74/0.46 BHP/Nm per KG. Anyway, of course all BS fact sheet theory, fact is both are great bikes and competing family members fighting for similar type of hooligan rider. Besides, I believe latest gen S3 is not at all dated but very much alive and kicking compared to its smaller bro and competition. S3 might not be outputting as much horses on paper as new superbike spinoffs S1000R, FZ10 nor 1190SDuke. S3's low end torque is better, usable power comparable and its looks -my personal opinion- much better than competition. Nevertheless to keep up with the Superbike derived competition and to differentiate the S3 better from the 765 STR, Triumph will likely create a heavier hooligan down the road?... Last but not least, it's a shame that Triumph HQ seems to have instructed its dealers and non-objective press for now to rave and highlight the new STR and marginalize the S3 marketing-wise. For sure direct comparisons like this one from Dubble D seems to be a no-GO for Triumph. This could be a strategy to raise more public awareness in preparation for Triumphs Moto2 adventure with the 765 engine next season? Luckily we have guys like you to patch up this void. Tx!
Vis Je ha! Yes I agree - although I've actually seen a few adverts here and there for the Speed rather than the RS? Guess they don't want sales stopping altogether!
Personally, I think the RS is the sexiest thing since Farrah Fawcett. Speed looks and feels way to top heavy. Shame to hear the Street is still so peaky even with the displacement bump. Even so, I prefer twisty roads that don't require much power to have a good time. The lighter bike with more modulatable throttle would still get my vote. Doesn't really matter though as I'm not near sexy enough to be seen on one...
saddlebag I'm sure you're sexy enough 😂 as I said - totally subjective. It seems a real 50/50 split on people's opinions - I thought a lot more people would be for the Street RS to be honest!
saddlebag fyi unlike my old iconic but plump 2006 S3, my new S3 is very nimble but less nervous/ more planted then the Street Triple and almost as twitchy as my Daytona racer. Especially now with a lowboy installed.
At about 55 seconds into the video, the other guy has a Kawasaki i reckon? He was the same guy with whom you were talking about the triple right, post your ride.. Why don't you ask him to lend his?
I've not really got it to lift to be honest mate. The electrics can cut in a bit like the Street did for you. Unlike my last bike the Superduke R which was a nightmare to keep the front wheel on the ground. Mind you it saved on front rubber 😂🖒
Excuse my ignorance for not knowing by sight what bike you are riding (and therefore talking about) but I don't...would have been mighty helpful if you'd just said something simple like "This is the Street Triple 765".
Hey..you haven't really given a fair review cos you didn't ride the RS in track mode,(which makes it an another bike). I'd suggest take the RS out with the right rider mode, without the electronics cutting in. You probably change your opinion after.
Been waiting for this vid bro speed all day for me will always have a soft spot for a street and love my rx but what the fuck they doing with the colour schemes on the new ones there awful
Trail riding Days I'll agree it's not the smoothest - I personally hate 1st-2nd in particular! But it's the rest of it for me that wins, just felt like the Street was a naked track bike. I was after a brute with some character
Got to 3.28 when he complained strongly about the back being too soft taking a corner at 30mph, turned it off - his opinion after that was meaningless to me.
Adrian Sayers I didn’t strongly complain, I merely said “I thought it wouldn’t be this soft”...? Good to know you’re not interested in anyone else’s view on something unless it matches your own huh?
