Streets by VICE: Austin (6th St.)

In this episode of Streets by Vice, we explore Austin’s rich and rather strange cultural history through the lens of one of its most iconic thoroughfares: 6th street. Sixth is significant in many ways; it was the breeding ground for its now renowned music scene, which when talking to experts across the city is at the core of virtually every other industry in Austin and inextricable from the city's identity. 6th street also spans east to west across the city, the urban planning for which has major implications on the city’s diverse demography. Finally, where sixth street runs through downtown, it sits adjacent to its tech epicenter which is currently booming on a national scale.
If Austin has always had one foot firmly planted in music, the other has most certainly been in tech-since the 1950s Austin has been a notable location for the industry. The University of Texas at Austin has consistently pumped students through its engineering and computer science programs, and as a result it sits firmly at the forefront of the tech space. In contrast to a city like San Francisco, however, the money and development that has come along with the tech boom has not diminished its alternative, creative identity. Over past decades, the two worlds have managed to thrive alongside each other, often with intriguing overlap. And while the whitewashing and gentrification many Austinites take issue with may be true, what we are seeing now is an Austin that more than anything is simply growing up.

I think the idea comes from Austin’s “The Master Plan” which was written up before 35 was created. The official document stated that all the black and brown people who lived in Austin would live East of this (eventual) highway. They weren’t allowed to live anywhere else in the city. Also fun fact: this area didn’t receive running water and electricity until around the 1950’s. The city put little to no money into keeping up the infrastructure and safety of this side of Austin. So while no Austinite may call 35 the “Berlin Wall”, there is a specific history surrounding just that. You can probably find the master plan online and read it yourself, it’s really interesting.

they gentrified all of downtown and east of the highway adjacent to it. you'll find pockets south and north central but most are spread throughout. downtown Austin doesn't want the Latino community anymore. no more authentic taco stands and restaurants. just hipster friendly spots that are gentle to the tourist.

I am curious how it compares to Florida. It's a lazy street kid nightmare here. I actually feel bad for the ones with mental issues. They are shadowed by the lazyness and greed of people who are just trash and dont want to work. So the attention of the people who do, indeed, need help is diminishing. But it is getting crazy here.

@@mindyourbusiness1934 you can find neighborhoods all around the U.S. that are called "the hood" and/or "ghettos" so there's definitely some in Austin tho Texas doesn't have crazies running around all the time like in states California, Michigan, Illinois, New York, couple other New England states so yeah we don't have hoods or ghettos that you can compare to cities in those states I think that Killeen and Houston probably rivals some but who you calling pussies come over and say that to anybody that's a Texan rock ya shit real quick
@mindyourbusiness1934
@mindyourbusiness1934 5 лет назад
@@brandonfj5811 There is a difference between hoods and poor neighborhoods. Hoods someone is getting shot/killed every week. These are parts of the cities that you can't walk down the street without being checked. However, having a hood is nothing to be proud of. Austin should be happy it is a calm city but please defer from calling any part of your city "hood". I'm sure the people stuck living in the hoods in Dallas/Houston would love to live in your "hoods".
@brandonfj5811
@brandonfj5811 5 лет назад
@@mindyourbusiness1934 well it was different before gentrification and the expansion of the city so yea it used to be more calm and quiet crime still happened here but not often now it's worse then it was before so to speak I ain't trying to say that so much shit happens here like the urban cities of California or New York bc Austin is not big enough yet(Dallas, Houston, and killeen is a different story),tho we do have parts of the city where you should at least be cautious when ur walking around at night. But really crime here is more thought out bc anyone could clap you a cop, civilian, or another criminal so just bc we don't have cities that compare other states crime rate doesn't mean weakness and just bc ur from a state that does have a high crime rate doesn't mean ur tough or "hard"

Austin was such a great town. I lived there from 2004 to 2018. It went from being a cheap, laid back music town to Silicon Valley, with expensive homes (that come with expensive property taxes), full of sky scrapers and high rise condos on any lot (usually built after tearing down cool old businesses/buildings who can't afford the rent). Now its a giant city, with suburban sprawl, that tries hard to insist its still 'weird', but in my opinion lost its culture, and uses the 'keep Austin weird' slogan to attract more companies. As it changed from music to tech, hippies to hipsters, and mega corporations like Google, Amazon, FB, Oracle, Apple, and many others set up shop, even Dallas became funkier than ATX.

I live here now and yeah you're pretty spot on. We're basically going through a tech invasion like San Francisco did in the late 90s and early 2000s. There's still plenty of OG Austin to be found but the housing prices are getting absolutely insane. A few more years and all the soul of the city will be gone unless the powers that be do something about the gentrification and cost of housing

I remember seeing some awesome punk shows at the Ritz Theater in the early 80's, B.B. King in the 90's. Could go on, and on and on, those were the days! The Continental Club and The Broken Spoke are the only two still standing in place. I now live in a different city. Austin changed, and not for the better. The Pacific Northwest is great for the summer and mediocre to miserable for the other 8 and half months of the year. Texas is nice for the other three seasons and you can always go swimming in the long hot summer. An old Texan, originally from the Midwest, once told me "You don't have to shovel sunshine."

thatonedudeoverhere I used to live on East 6th and Chicon back when the bars on the street were all tejano, Mexican bars. Hotel Vegas was a place to avoid, unless you were looking for a prostitute. It was affordable, really affordable, and moved out a few years before Shangri La and Rio Rita ushered in the wave of change. I like how this video talks about the east side as being low income, when in reality, I was shocked at how expensive it is to live in that neighborhood now. Even going deep east, the houses are pricey (and not in great shape). I finally moved and don’t really miss the city, except for the food and my friends. But I will say this about the place; Austin has some of the best people on earth living in the city. People that are generous, encouraging, supportive, community driven, positive, embracing. That’s the true sprit of the place and it’s the biggest asset. The people from Austin are exceptional and I love the city for that simple reason, despite the rampant gentrification, horrible traffic and oppressive heat.

I lived in Austin from 1985 through 1993 and the city was absolutely beautiful and the night life was even better and I loved every minute of it. The night life in Austin on weekends especially on 6th street was super, with a night life atmosphere with lots of dancing, beer drinking, and no crime what so ever and extremely safe to party, a cop hardly ever seen, now, squad of cops almost every other corner. Today, the high crime, shootings, fighting, and mugging going on 6th street and the city has left the tourist to go spend their money else where that is safe and sound. Thank God I and all my friends have left the city years ago and will never go back, ever. Some officials have stated that the city government is to blame for the craziness. Maybe, some day things will get back to normal, maybe.

"Lower income E. side." lol you clearly don't live here. We have not found a way to co-exist between arts and tech industry. Rent is sky rocketing, pay is stagnant and we are all leaving bit by bit. I just moved. They also left out the rampant police abuse that happens there. There is no interest from the tech industry to preserve Austin itself. As they move in they're building there own areas and gentrifying lower income areas to also cater to them. There is currently a major battle happening over the last low income apartment complex on the east side. They're wanting to tear it down to build a luxury shopping district and oracle campus. I actually literally just moved out.

I'm from Austin. 34 years old and have seen the city go through massive changes. I can't knock on this short overview of 6th Street and the area. The girl did a good job and the people interviewed put it perfectly. The locals miss the old days but have to adjust and embrace the change or be left out. She could've touched on the nightlife and bar scene some more which is why most come to 6th street but bars and drinking are done everywhere. She wanted to show some character. It's unfortunate what has happened to Austin. I miss the small town feel it used to have. It has pretty much lost that. And I miss affordable housing for the existing middle class. I can moan and bitch about it all I want but it'll always be home to me. Hook em!

I think what's interesting about the gentrification of Austin is how almost covert it is. After seeing the city for a while, there's far more local mom and pop shops than many of the small towns I've spent time in. But the more time I spend the more I realize that these 'local business owners' aren't from the communities which they base themselves so much as they are opportunistic individuals from the general Austin area. Austin really feels like a blend of the more rural areas that is trying to convert to a urban paradise. I'm not trying to vilify individuals for seeking opportunity outside of their towns but I see why a lot of locals have become hostile to the concept of people moving to Austin for a job. I have bosses who can afford to build a house in Austin all outright whereas in Cali they could barely afford the tiniest apartment. Seeing how those types of transplants are affecting the economy is interesting to say the least.
