For those of you looking for a more in-depth (& accurate) representation of Bedford Ave...There is a huge and growing Caribbean population that has maintained itself in BK since the 70s. Also Puerto Ricans were a mainstay of Williamsburg loooooong before skaters showed up in the 2000s. Bedford has also been the birth place of great Black American artists (other than rappers). Go watch the documentary Brooklyn Boheme.

My parents grew up in Williamsburg and I still have family there. About 25 years ago my aunt was telling my mom that lots of "Village people" (her name for the hipsters) were moving in and that we should buy some old houses on Bedford. My dad and I told my mom she was crazy. I wish now we bought those houses.

Lets be honest. The companies and platforms we spend time or money with have a history that lack research. How many people look into the background of candy or juices etc. Were born consume and die. Point maybe none lol. Just know vice or anyone can prosper without objection. Im a Bushwick knight born 85, i don't remember anyone questioning the local dealer selling to so and so mother. We just exist
@idonttan
@idonttan 7 лет назад
It feels like you barely captured the spirit of what makes us Brooklyn natives proud of our city. I guarantee you 99% of actual New Yorkers have never even heard of that skate shop or visited that steak house more than once, or really never. There are so many different ethnic groups here and yet so much gentrification, and most of what was highlighted was the host eating and showing depressing gray shots of the city.

Daniel Eder *sigh* Ive skated almost my whole life, before the THPS blowup and I will say it makes me cringe so much when skaters make other skaters feel shitty over stuff like this. I'm sure these girls already get alot of shit for skating in the first place. It would be cool if skater's could recognize otherness instead of being so inclusive about these subtle social cues we spread to keep people out. Even if someone skates for a year, so what? They tried something new they thought was cool. Anyhow I know its not your deal, just felt like getting that idea out there somewhere. I'm sure these kids who "cringe" at a Mall Grab are just reiterating something they heard from someone they thought was cool, and blindly passes it on for the sake of remaining a "cool insider".

Disappointed in Vice today. I'm from Brooklyn and as much as I am enjoying some of the change, even a lot of it, the fact that I grew up here as a 4th generation Italian American. On the same exact block as all my previous family including my great grandfather. Today I cannot embrace my own neighborhood because we were all pushed out and you have to be a millionaire to strive. South Brooklyn is where I was born and raised. Unfortunately the buck stops here and I will be the last generation for my kids will never know what it's like to be a stoop kid. You missed the story big time. And this guy is my least favorite of your reporters.

Depending on where you're at in South Brooklyn, it's still cheaper than north Brooklyn. Of course, everywhere is more expensive than what it used to be, but you'll get more for less in Bensonhurst (for some reason, this is a little pocket that is good...aka...not trendy, so hasn't skyrocketed) than you would in Bedstuy or even as far south as Kensington.

Mahalo, your observation in stunning in its perception and clarity. There is sadness in the hearts of most dispossessed poets. As you are aware, gentrification is a process of displacing a community of typically simple, relatively poor people with complex, relatively affluent people. Hence, the rich-in-spirit people, who often created the coolness of their area, are rapidly replace by the rich-in-wallet people who attempt to co-opt that very coolness for themselves. And it also runs through my neighborhood of Virgil Village, East Hollywood ! But it also runs through Los Feliz, Koreatown, USC, the Coliseum, Exposition Park, South Central, adjacent to Compton, Carson, and ends right before the Port of Los Angeles (the biggest port in the nation).

Dear VICE, I really enjoyed knowing that Vice streets was doing a story in the neighborhood I called home for the majority of my life. Bedford ave has so much history and of course one does not expect that you can fit every characteristic of its diversity into 30mins of film. I had to dislike this piece of work because there is for whatever reason the omission of a significant group of people that has influenced the culture of BEDFORD AVE more than any group you highlighted. (Shame, shame, shame)The West Indian population were among the first group of people to settle along Bedford ave in the early 1900's. Talk about culture? I could rattle off every contribution but I'm not the reporter. Sorry on this one VICE. Do over

SOOO DROOPY They don't. A vegetarian diet is derived from plants, with or without eggs or dairy. People who don't eat meat, but do eat fish are called pescatarians.

the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body. In other words, it is the merge of different bodily sensations. So the OP had a visual perception [he saw the steak] and his smell sensation and the taste sensation were triggered. This has to do with psychology, but it is too complicated to explain here. Google it. it is quite interesting

I recently went to NY and loved it, especially Brooklyn with its genuine look and I was surprised to see little to no franchise restaurant or coffee shops, the rest is still unique shops and places to eat that have an authentic feel.

Your part of the problem
@OutWithMyGear
@OutWithMyGear 7 лет назад
1) You're* 2) Cities evolve all the time. hipsters/yuppies/immigrants/poor/gangs/suits/bluecolor/etc - it's a never ending cycle. That's what neighborhoods do - they evolve. It's not unnatural or an anomaly. This evolution is NOT a problem. The local government neglecting long time residence during this particular change is the problem. The lack of getting stabilized rent or rent control leads to people moving out is the problem. Shitty landlords who push long time residents out by not providing heat and repairs so they can make bigger buck are the problem. White folk moving in with organic gluten free bullshit food is good. It bring the crime down. The gang violence diminishes. Neighborhoods become safer and more vibrant. Who ta fuck would want to step in to BedSty 10 years ago? Just driving passed it one would hope not to get a flat on some streets. And that is considered OK but Hipsters NOT? Your statement is ignorant and displays lack of knowledge on this issue.
@princediop8190
@princediop8190 7 лет назад
OutWithMyGear You're the ignorant one here if you honestly believe that just because a place isn't filled with white people and gluten free food makes that area dangerous. Before these places were gentrified, they had culture. Maybe the residents weren't rich, but i wouldn't call them gangbangers and thugs. Yes, the local government is part of the problem too, but most of the time these shitty hipsters create these horrible circumstances. Also, gentrification may seem all cool in it's early stages, but guess you haven't looked into the aftermath. What these shitty hipster kids do is move into low income neighborhoods, causing the renting prices to soar and when the prices are too high, the hipsters pack up their bags and move to the next area. This ultimately leads to low income family's who by the way aren't all thugs, not have anywhere to live. I'm not saying that gentrification is bad, but it clearly only benefits a certain group of people who is mainly white. Have you ever look into the perspective of a struggling family, who is forced to quit their jobs and move all because a couple of white kids with daddies money decided it was cool to live in "poor people places." Their just pushing these people into a corner all for the sake of looking cool and or ironic. You're just another spoiled racist white brat who believes just because some people are poor, means their dangerous. You're clearly part of the problem

@@princediop8190 I was born in brooklyn and lived in flatbush and I see your point. more and more affluent people are moving in and rents slowly going higher. But that's the landlord fault also during the 80s and 90s it was more dangerous and there were murders every day and it was less clean. Not a good place to live in

When the segment about Crown Heights started, the footage that was shown with the voice-over was from Williamsburg. This fuels the misconception that the South Williamsburg Hasidim and Crown Heights Lubavitchers are culturally equivalent. The differences between the two communities are considerable, and it would have been more accurate not to conflate them.
8 лет назад
There are so many types of Hasidim in both neighborhoods you cannot really distinguish them. Satmar is a town in Romania but it is used too loosely within south Williamsburg because not all the Hasidism that live their come for the town called 'satmar'. In fact they come from all parts of Eastern Europe. Same goes for crown heights. I see what your trying to say that satmar's are perhaps more orthodox but they both speak Yiddish and have few cultural differences
