Rope spokes... spaghetti spokes... string spokes... Nope spokes? Let's see how these Berd fabric spokes handle proper DH mountain biking with a heavy rider.
Disclaimer: Berd sent me these spokes to test. No money changes hands and Berd had zero say in how this video was produced. We have no ongoing relationship with Berd. You can check them out here, if you're looking for more details: berdspokes.com

The setup looks amazing, but that's approx. $2600 in Wheelset and tires alone. Just way out of the average mountain bikers budget. Great for sponsored racers, though.

I'm building an $1,100 wheelset with Berd spokes that weighs 1,515g and is strong enough for enduro (I'm also going to run cushcore so it'll be good for DH too). Parts list: NEWMEN Front Hub MTB FADE Straightpull 6-Bolt silver 15x110mm Thru Axle BOOST DT SWISS Rear Hub 350 Straightpull 6-Hole 12x148 mm BOOST Thru Axle Freehub SRAM XD NOTUBES Rim 29" ZTR Flow MK4 28 Hole RACE FACE Rim 27,5" 650B ARC 30 Offset 28 Hole Alloy rims because carbon is garbage. (Running different brand rims front and rear for weight savings, Raceface 29 is heavier than NoTubes 29, and NoTubes 27.5 is heavier than Raceface 27.5) I would have gone with slightly lighter hubs but the price increase would be absurd. 76projects High Flow Valves (lighter, higher flow, and cheaper than SantaCruz Fillmore valves) Formula steel brake rotor screws (lighter than other steel screws, and cheaper than titanium). I'm also running KCNC 7075 thru axles which are 93g lighter than the stock pair. Only $80 for the pair. Got a lot of parts of the r2 bike site, because they measure, list, and allow you to sort by weight in grams.

This concept is bothering a lot of people as they have the impression that the hub is resting on the bottom spokes, as opposed to the hub being suspended on the upper ones .... that old cart wheel model is still somehow confusing people.... One thing I am wondering about is how they would hold up against scrub, branches, rocks and whatever cr@p that always gets in your wheel.... well, gets in my wheel in the dry season. Could they fray?

I am using Berd spokes on my Yeti ARC. I have Onyx Vespar hubs and weareone union rims and they have been perfect. When i got the wheels it was like i hit a fitness milestone automatically, could tell right away how much easier it was to ride longer and how much better i felt at the end of a long ride. They are my favorite part on my bike.

Have these on all three bikes. 10 downhill race weekends plus another 10 or so dh park days. Ride my trail and e-bike 2-4 times a week. I did ride a regular wheel set once recently and while the setup felt more sluggish than my berd wheels, I was experimenting with different inserts and tubes which could’ve caused the difference in feel. The berd spokes seems to keep the wheels true longer. The only negatives besides price to me are to change one or more spokes you have to detension all the other spokes. Make sure you keep track of which spoke lengths are on which wheels if you have multiple hoop/hub configurations and make sure you have spares on hand (order with your build) otherwise you’re paying shipping for a couple of spokes.

I LOVE my Berd spokes! So lightweight (unsprung & rotational), but also have such a nice dampened feel to them. I love love love them. Stupid expense? Yes. Will I buy them again? Only if the price comes down. But this was a very specific treat for myself (surgery recovery) and I'm glad I did it. Hopefully this tech becomes more available, affordable and accessible in the next few years. If you are in Vancouver, Kissing Crows Cyclery are dealers and know what they are doing.

I’ve has similar experiences with my current wheelset. I’m 235lbs and running a Derby front rim and a light bicycle rear rim with DT Swiss hubs and BERD spokes/ my wheelset was built by berd and are still running true after 2 years of a bunch of riding/ ive had many rocks and sticks get thrown into the wheels/ never a problems/ im not wealthy by any means but the value proposition is plain to see here/ i see my self replacing the bearings on my hubs and running my current berd wheels for years to come/ sidenote: i ride a full tilt ripley and my berd wheelset is the most standout “component” that makes the bike as sweet as it is….

Berd had such a good idea, but also incredible frustrating rip off. They just use standard kitsurfing lines 5$ for 20m (~64 spokes) and an ordanery splice on one side, a fingertrap on the other. Both every kitsurfer and sailer can do with closed eyes and sell it with a 10000% mark up to save 120g. Such a shame. 🤮
