Definitely interested in this! Whether I have 97mm in a vertical- or near-vertical- portion of my 9U or 12U case is questionable, but I’ll check… Btw, I first saw this as a single pic with no explanation on FB, and the loop was fully retracted. My first thought was that the z-axis was modulated by twisting the ring, not pulling on it, and if that had been the case the module would not have needed to be nigh on 4” deep. Go on- you’re the engineer: how difficult would that be to achieve?
@walrtbstudios5430 There are joysticks available that have twist as the third axis (originally used for zooming in and out when controlling CCTV cameras). They also have a button on the end that could be used for gates or whatever. I have one String Thing left in stock - if you buy it now I'll ship it to you first thing tomorrow: www.nervoussquirrel.com/string_thing
Do you have anything that explains the layout of your modular? I'm just starting out on building my own and I'm kind of doing a level thing - oscillators, filters, envelopes, amplifiers - all on different levels
How strong is the spring? Neither of my cases is deep enough and I'd consider to get it and make it's own case, but I'm afraid I'd need to add too much weight for it not to move when the string is pulled.
The string pull force is around 1 Newton to start pulling the string, 2.5N near the end of the reel, so not that strong. I've tried it in a small eurorack case and it doesn't pull the case over. If you want to try one in your current setup you could potentially try using standoffs to move the module forward. Note in the online shop there's a discount if you buy two at the same time.
