This week in the garden we string the onion crop for winter storage. We showed the last of the potato crop. I showed how I prepare the ground ready for garlic, using barley straw. Music Tonto By Silent Partner. Episode 249.
Oh it's so wonderful to know that with all the madness in the world, you are stringing onions as I am, and I've just come in from incorporating the chopped straw from the chicken coop into a bed for my garlic. To know there is continuity, life on "slow" in the garden and related chores, and on your farm life is the same as on my farm. Bless your hearts!
Thanks Ocean Soul, good to know we are both on the same path. Don't forget to add some bone meal to replace the nitrogen. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.
@@CastleHillGarden Thanks Cliff, I always do add bone meal and thank you for the kind reminder. This was a strange year over here, greenhouse tomatoes flourished while garden tomatoes shriveled. Red cabbage is huge, as were the onions, pole beans grew but only half as tall as usual. Shaking my head! Stay safe and strong and healthy!
Now don't rush us through the onion stringing....it's a work of art. I always go back and watch again before I string mine. One of my very favorite videos of the year. They keep so well this way.
Sorry about that P.S but the video was too long this week without speeding up. A few people didn't like so we will not do again. Take care regards Cliff.
Thanks Steven.. Its a job needs doing every year, nice to get them stored away. Finished up with 10 strings our daughter will be glad of some regards Cliff.
I never get tired watching you string up your onions. It's one of the annual signs that Fall has arrived! Cliff strings the onions and then leaves can start to change colors! Lovely red onion harvest this year as well! 🍁🍂
Thanks Sharman.. Its a job well done It did make 10 stings, I will be giving my daughter some. Autumn is our favourite time of year, before winter sets in. Take care regards Cliff
Lovely to see your hens pottering about while you work Cliff - they are good companions and they are obviously hoping for the odd tasty morsel around where you're working! I had a good crop of Charlotte and Sarpo Mira this year too - I find they store well too. Take care 😊👍
Thanks Willow Grove.. yes the chickens are always hoping for a treat, never seem to be far away from us. Nice to hear you had a good crop of potatoes this year, well done as not the best of growing years. Take care regards Cliff.
Thanks Michelle, unfortunately the garlic wasn't good enough to braid this year due to a rust attack. But the onions turned out well. Take care regards Cliff.
Thank you Cliff and Diane for another enjoyable video. Interesting to see you string onions, one to remember. Fine crop of potatoes to store. Have a good week always look forward to your videos. Take care. x
@@CastleHillGarden I see many people saying about the beauty of fruit and veg now. And it really is. I always thought I was a bit odd to say so haha. Glad I'm normal after all :)
Truly beautiful beautiful onions. Takes me back to my very first video that I watched of you and Diane. Your videos are always so informative and relaxing... thank you!! Take good care, many blessings to you.
Thank you for the guidance - first time doing this and my crop is not as lovely as yours but it worked .... next year I will have confidence to plant more sets !
Thanks for visiting SunRa Artist Homestead, nice to have the onions and potatoes stored away for winter use, now the weather is changing. Take care regards Cliff.
Here in Idaho we have Thrips and a root grub which are challenging for onion growing. As a result my onions are embarrassing but there is always next year to get it right. I enjoy watching a master, thank you.
@@CastleHillGarden That is great advice. I have looked into them and discovered a very positive solution to several problems that have been vexing me. Thank you.
Hi Cliff and lovely Diane your ground looks nice and light there turning lovely, we do like how you do your onions and the red onions look superb 😋 We will only be doing zebrune and new to us red Florence next season as val enjoys the flavour and about right size for us . Keep safe Bill and val
Thanks Bill & Val, our reds are Red Baron the only onions that give us a decent crop on my soil. We are growing some shallots this year never been very successful in the past, probably grow under insect mech. The flavour and size is most important for the chef, red Florence sounds nice. Take care regards from us both.
Dear Cliff and Diane. Your onions look so nice strunged up. Unfortunately I have no onions to string up this year because of the onion fly maggots, but I strunged up my onions according to your instructions last year. Nice harvest of spuds too. I was happy with my Sarpo Mira, but not with my favorite potato KerrsPink. Many potatoes, but tiny. So sad they do not like to grow in my sandy soil. Nice to get a glimpse of your lovely chickens. It looks like they have a happy life. Thanks for a lovely video. All the best to you both.
Thanks Benni, I think I will grow my onions under insect mesh next season, so many people have had there onions spoilt by the onion fly maggots. I will have to built some sort of frame for them. Keep trying different varieties of potatoes to suit your land. I did find the Sarpo Mira did well on my clay soil, but we had to many rotten ones but no blight. Take care enjoy your week regards from us both.
Excellent way of storing onions. Thank you for the tutorial. They look so great You do it so fast. Does it matter to hang them outside to dry if there is a roof over them even though there are no sides on the building. Will the humidity of rain interfere with their drying out properly? Just love your little feathered friends making sure you are doing it right :) Just love your videos! What kind of onions are the gold ones? They are so plump and round. Lots of good eating there.
Thanks Vanessa.. you can hang outside on dry days, I wouldn't recommend hanging out on rainy damp days even under cover, as they can get mildew. The onions are called santero F1, very pleased with them regards Cliff.
Hi Angy once cleaned and set up, It only takes twenty minuets to string them. I do show at a slower pace when showing on video. Thanks for watching regards Cliff.
Hi Harry, I prepare the soil for the onions in the late Autumn, I double dig and add manure also some hoof and horn meal. In the spring before planting I rake in some blood, fish, and bone meal, that's it Take care regards Cliff.
Hi trialsbikeguy, the onions are best stored in a frost free airy shed, away from direct sun. We hang them in our shed and we have had 1 degree Celsius, for quite a while through the winter with no affect regards Cliff.
Hi MM-uq5jz, sorry to hear this. If you are using four strings, once you have threaded the onion through, you must go around the strings then thread through again and press down gently. Start the next onion through a different pair of strings, once locked in the wont come out regards Cliff.
