I love the "Lighten up, Francis" line. Warren Oates dismisses Psycho as if he was nothing but a sassy little child. And called him Francis, too. "I'll kill ya!"
How the hell John Candy delivered his lines without breaking into piss pants laughter is beyond me. The faces Ramie made at him were unreal. Great cast. One of my very favorite comedy’s still crisp and hilarious today as when it debuted.
John Candy had to call his shrink before the mud wrestling scene. So frightened to be seen in his long Johns. Poor guy. If only he knew how much we loved him and were pulling for him. One of the most naturally funny men to ever hit the screen.
I instantly think back to the Leave it to Beaver skit when Ramis' Whitey convinces Candy's Beaver to kill Thomas' Haskel. (Dave Thomas is the ringmaster at the strip club. Joe Flaherty is one of the Czech border guards. Regular SCTV reunion.)
Warren Oates Sgt. Hulka is PERFECT in that role! The way he plays off Bill Murray is excellent and really makes the movie. What this guy did in this movie is very underrated.
I agree. Why don’t they make movies like this anymore, though? Everything nowadays seems to be all this Marvel superhero crap with CGI backgrounds and stuff like that. The 80s and 90s were definitely great decades for movies.
I love how Dewey has no idea exactly what he enlisted for. “What do you have, a 6 to 8 week training program here? A really tough one?” lol. He’s gullible - a recruiter’s dream!
"... and I don't like anyone touching my stuff... so just keep yer meat hooks off!! (I've been using that "meat hooks" line for years!) Love that line!
Joined the Army almost exactly when this movie was released. They actually did this first night at Basic. I forget what I said when he got to me, but I'm certain it was stupid.
@@LB__1 That’s very true. Very original and funny writer/director. Animal house, Caddyshack, Stripes, Vacation, Groundhog Day, Back to School, Ghostbusters, etc.
For real. What the heck is that about? It felt like the screenwriter had to take a dump in the middle of writing and rushed through the story w whatever came to mind just to finish. This has bothered me since I rented it as a kid decades ago. You mean to tell me NO ONE behind producing this movie, no second unit P.A., no director or actor, stopped and said, "Uh, this second half makes no sense, it changes the whole story, it's even less believable, and isn't even that funny." It shouldn't bug me as much as it does...but, it's sincerely perplexing! Lol.
It's hard to watch this clip. I was in college when this came out. I knew John Candy from SCTV when it was on Canadian tv. Losing him at such a young age was tragic. Ramis died a couple years ago, which makes me feel old.
“I went to this doctor. He told me I swallow a lot of aggression…along with a lot of pizza!” One of my favourite lines in the movie. Still miss John Candy’s affable on-screen presence almost 30 years after his passing.
@@stevemiller. in 1994 Candy was acting in Wagons East, a Western “buddy pic” being filmed in Mexico. He had been in only one successful film in the 90s, 1993s Cool Runnings, about the Jamaican Bobsled Team. He was close to 300pounds, a chain smoker, consumed far too much alcohol, and with comedian Richard Lewis joining him for Wagons East, was using cocaine. The weight, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, and filming in the heat in Mexico all combined to cause the fatal heart attack. He made attempts over the years to lead a healthy lifestyle, but it never took.
We had an introduction session like this in basic training in 1970.The best one I heard was from a trainee who said "I was an apprentice hook baiter on a fishing boat which lasted 2 years. Then I would become a journeyman baiter for 2 more years. After which I would be a master baiter" His nickname became "Handjob".I was heavy set & white so I was "Uncle Fester".We had a black heavy set trainee who was "Pork chop"
My fav line: "LEE HARVEY! You are a madman! When you're friend stole that cow.... and then he tried to make it with the cow.....I wanna party with you cowboy!"
@@jeromemccollom936 I was 8 when "Lee Harvey" blasted JFKs brains all over Dealey Plaza. In fact, they had just let us out of school right after lunch at Gullett Elementary in Austin TX because The President was coming to town right after he finished lunch in Dallas. Dude never showed up....
This movie came out right after I completed basic training. LMAO when I first heard Hulka say, “You don’t call me sir, I work for a living!” Heard that a thousand times from the D. I’s in basic.
When I graduated from the school of hard Knox I had Drill SGT Cash. We had a sit down like this, though it was closer to graduation. He called us around and talked about how we were white, black, samoan, hispanic and he thought we got along really well. He then went on to tell us that if we ever saw him again, we should just punch ourselves in the face because he has another crew of of S heads rolling in.
@@frankgrimesification The Samoan? No. He was actually fairly sleekly built. I did serve with a number of pacific islanders that generally did well in the light infantry, but not in mech. They had difficulty fitting through the hatches. And they took up a lot of room.
Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and John Candy are also so hilarious in this scene. "Chicks dig me because I rarely wear underwear, and when I do it's usually something unusual."
"Any of you guys call me Francis....and I kill ya". Ohhhhh, "you just made the list buddy"....Kills me. These are the kind of guys I grew up with, Smart Asses with perpetual one liners, puns and sarcasm (most times intentional, sometimes unintentional),,, a contest of wit (or wit-hout...sorry, I could'nt resist).
in the rear, with the gear (a line from Full Metal Jacket to describe the relative safety of being well behind the front lines on things like logistics detail or supply dump guard duty)
this was my favorite scene. First saw in '82. I could smell the barracks, feel the blankets, the whole energy. Although the characters are exaggerated and the uniforms were all cotton in basic (served 75- 79) , no drill Sergeant ever sat down and had that kind of talk. I love the actors and and haven't seen the film in decades, should get a copy. Brillant dialoge, especially like the comentor before me said about Francis. Interstingly, there have been studies that have shown that the slightly paranoid types often do better in prisoner of war camps, lol. Like the Russian character in the great: "You Can't take it with You" film of 1938, lol.
Came in the same time, we had a guy that would hit himself in the face when he messed up…when he lost at combatives and started wailing on himself, the SGM looked at our NCOs for some answers and they just shrugged. It was awkward but kinda funny.
1:27 my man Judge Reinhold , played in Beverly Hills Cop , but before that , Fast Times at Ridgemont High , he buys a car on payments and says , Just 14 more payments and this Deluxe sedan is all mine
I worked with a guy once who's name was Frances (Francis?) but went by the nickname Frank. He was an Army reservist whom I met the day he returned to the job after a deployment to Iraq. He and I got along quite well. One day he started going off on a tangent about something and getting all worked up; but he was not aware of something that prevented it from being an issue. When I went to tell him that, I led off with "Lighten up Frances". We both got a good laugh out of it. As it turns out, we were the only two in the room that had ever seen Stripes.
spent 10 days at reception station in March 84 in those very barracks. didn't have this talk until we were sent to basic training at Disney Barracks on the other side of Ft. Knox. you gotta driver's license? here drive this broom is my favorite story from those 10 days. never raised my hand again.
A CLASSIC, DRILL SARGENT HULKA REPRESNTS THE REAL SIDE OF THE ARMY. TOUGH,SHARP, NO NONSENSE, SERIOUS, AND PROFESSIONAL. THE ARMY AND THIS COUNTRY NEEDS MORE LEADERS LIKE THAT.
I was at Disney World too. Grad April, 95. DS Delorosa . 1st platoon Delta 2/13. Went back a few years later and stayed in the old barracks in the movie before they tore them down
I spent a little time overseas working for the government there's no way in hell it gets funnier than when he says I'm going to volunteer my leadership😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
