Hey! We're making videos again! That's neat! Btw, REVERB MACHINE supplied all the *amazing* music for this video, so go show them lots 'a love: ru-vid.com/show-UCK8fV7zXqFE8jKzbpJfO7dAvideos
Rian Johnson personally harmed me by filming a train arriving at a station, terrifying me because I believed the train was about to crash through the screen.
I come here from the man himself replying to your tweet sharing the video. And I absolutely LOVED everything about it. The editing in particular is wonderful, and I love how everything shown and said is visually linked by the script typing bar. Definitely subscribing !
Exactly, because Mauler never said anything like the stuff in there, it's actually kinda toxic/gross. This video just lies outright about the guy's views, as many of the things Mauler believes are actually in direct opposition to that comment supposedly from him. And all the comments are just eating it up because they've never bothered to look at both sides of the debate that circled Star Wars.
@@january3rd293 Mauler is a wannabe critic that can make up (find) flaws in ESB for that matter. He’s a joke who thinks he’s factually right with his subjective criticism about an objective matter he oh so likes to ignore, or is just too stupid to grasp (ahem bombs dropping in space, ahem)
@@i-deni-i5138 If you think they're made up, you could debunk the flaws he finds. If you actually know any of the flaws he mentions, assuming you've actually, you know, watched his content.
i love how when explaining the almost minimalist and simple nature of effects editing in rian johnson films, you have edited the explanations in the most minimalist and simple nature you could think of, its great. Edit: HOW DOES THIS VIDEO ONLY HAVE A COUPLE HUNDRED VIEWS WTF???
This video is a work of art, embodying the ideas it shows in a way that brings new depth to them. What you articulate about communicating complexity simply goes so much deeper than just special affects, and in the the quality of your focus you’ve made that broader point clear. Thank you. I will keep coming back to this video.
Me during the entire first half of the video: "talk about the force bond talk about the force bond talk about the force bond talk about the force bond"
I just rewatched this video for the first time in a few months and felt the same warm, contented and wonderful feeling I got when it came out (also, only now did I notice the "oh baby" reference in 1:17, awesome!)
I never really thought of it as special effect (which is probably part of the point), but the TLJ teleconference scenes really are brilliant. They bring a whole new dimension to the Force and Star Wars, and have a huge emotional impact!
Black Panther: Give this man a shield! Star Wars fans: Give this man a trilogy! Agreed. Rian Johnson should have made not just the whole Sequel trilogy, but he needs to get his own one.
@Geralt of Trivia Hi! Well, I think that Rian would use, of course, the New Republic and and I think that he would also use something familiar to the First Order (but without Tie fighters and Destroyers). He would probably add more politic, but in a interesting way, with interesting characters. Now that you asked me about war, I think that maybe Rian would have make this trilogy been more Post apocalyptic, with the Knights of Ren or whatever. Rian knows how to world build very well in his movies, and I would love to see what he would have make.
I love the attention to detail you put in, and how you connected your own effects with those from Rian Johnson and tied both to the ideas behind them and just timed everything perfectly. 7:18 especially blew my mind.
Disappearing for a long time and coming back with a BEAUTIFUL ode to simple yet complex imagery in film is the strongest of flexes. THE FLEX!! I LOVE Rian Johnson and his vision of films and it's so great to see this look at his work. This is "Every Frame A Painting" levels of good and that is crazy high praise because I feel like they have reached a mythic level in Video Essy History. Even if this is just a once every 6 months thing, it's really great to see you back!
AYYY YOURE STILL ALIVE! Good to hear from you again man, as always your stuff is fascinating and just so you know, you’re good at explaining complex stuff in a simple (and entertaining) way
Man, I also do video essays and I try to do something more than just the basic with the visuals and the subjects - i'm brazilian, so unfortunatly the channel is all in portuguese. I can see in your work the same passion for the creation that I try to show, like you really care. This video will be a inspiration for everything I do from here, that's what I thought after seeing it. Thank you very much.
Such a wonderful job, as usual! It’s so lovely to see such an intelligent and passionate individual doing what he loves. Plus, as a fellow writer, I truly do appreciate all the hard work put into the planning of these episodes. It was your early Hamilton and Ryan Coogler videos that initially inspired me to start my own podcast, “In This Essay, I Will-“, which features similarly structured analysis of media (including an episode focusing on the color psychology of the most recent trilogy). It’s nowhere near as good as the episodes you produce, but I’m constantly improving my craft....with plenty of inspiration from folks like you! Once again, thank you so incredibly much for your work. I’m sure that all of your supporters truly are grateful for your talent and drive ☺️
Hey uh dude, can you do me a favor and always make awesome content like this I mean you already do and I love it. You clearly love doing this kind of stuff and it comes through in your videos. Just know that many people like myself really really appreciate the work 😊 . Also you're awesome.
Excellent video! I much prefer movies in the sub 10 million dollar range because these movies rely more on story, plot and character development than non stop action and flashing lights. My favorite kind of movie is one that is a drama with sci fi elements.
Leaving a comment as an offering to the great almighty algorithm, praised be the algorithm, long may it reign! In seriousness though, this was amazing! I think complexity expressed with simplicity and precision is the essence of Rian Johnson's approach to filmmaking, and it's why he is easily among my favorite filmmakers working today. You did a great job of illustrating that and also of doing that yourself.
I am so full of emotions right now wow! My god this video is sooo good, so well written and the visual presentation is delightful as always! I personally had a very roundabout way of discovering Rian Johnson's work in first falling in love with Oh Baby then falling in love with the video and then finally learning about the director. His work guided my vision of what my first project at film school will look (its now shelved cause quarantine) and i hope to somehow imitate that simple humane quality. Anyway just wanted to say thank you for this video i was proper bored and now feel realy hopeful lol from your biggest fan in Turkey :D
Ah, man! Knocked it out of the ballpark with the comeback. Your videos are always so fun to watch and I feel like I become a smarter person because of them.
Wow that was an awesome video. The analysis, editing, pacing, and most importantly, the way you constructed your motion graphics to echo the simplicity of the effects you’re describing ...👏 (7:16 in particular 😮😍) Keep up the amazing work!
This video is amazing! Not only is it interesting and well written, but the way you edited it is incredible! From the "here|there" right at the beginning, to the animation at 7:18 appearing in the movie titles, and all other details people have already mentioned. You are really talented! Never before I saw a YT video and thought "wow this was... beautiful"
I think Rian Johnson is a fucking genius. He's like a blend of Scorsese, Tarantino, and Spielberg when it comes to his writing and directing skills and he takes a page out of James Wan and Leigh Whannell's book on doing so much with so very little and when he is given so much to work with, he's given the reigns to wow us on a larger scale.
@@RayOfTruth image having the name rayoftruth but been ok with some one lying about another persons character/opinion either by incompetence's or just straight up slander.
I 100% agree on your take of Rian Johnson's minimalist method of conveying a lot in a little and that is really highlighted in most of his films when they leave you with a lasting impression on the themes or messages he wants to display. Very well-made video. On the other hand, while technically not being related to this video's point at all, your passive-aggressiveness against the TLJ uhh more "verbose" haters (ie the blurred Mauler pfp in the vid and your replies in this comment section) is unwarranted and quite frankly, immature. Many people commenting are just trying to defend one of their loved YTers (who does make valid criticisms) from an exaggerated but obviously targeted caricature. For a man who has made a video about 'unifying' the Star Wars fandom, this is disappointing. I know you can do better
Your comment seems really sincere and thoughtful so you're the one that gets an actual response from me. As you point out, the comment is an exaggerated caricature, which is exactly as intended. Because it's a joke. Not a "strawman argument", because it's not an argument at all. I don't think anyone actually thinks that way (I *hope* no one actually thinks that way, hahah), and it's meant as satire in reference to the literal hundreds of comments from total strangers who feel they need to tell me - someone they've never once met or interacted with - why I'm dumb and they're right about this movie. The joke in the video was in anticipation of all the people who love to chime in every time I mention Last Jedi even in passing (see my Avatar video comments for plenty of examples). It was a joke to light-heartedly acknowledge that I so, so, so sincerely do not care about their opinion of the film - they're allowed to dislike it, I just reeeeeeally have zero reason to care about them not liking it, and they have zero reason to care about me liking it. It was so exaggerated in an attempt to not actually offend anyone because literally no one holds these beliefs. And like I said, it was a joke about the people who go out of their way to comment on videos to say they hate the movie. So why did I make the profile a Mauler reference? Because he's who is by far the most associated with these commenters. Multiple comments of this sort that I've gotten are from people who either straight-up use the same profile picture or cite his videos in support of their opinions. It was to make the group I'm referencing immediately recognizable, and a good amount of them have shown that reference to be justified in this very comment section. So here is where I'm at right now. (And this is me talking directly to you about how I sincerely feel about this situation, person-to-person. It's not an intellectual argument. It's me speaking from the heart.) I just got out of the emergency room, after being hooked up to an IV and a breathing machine for hours thanks to covid-19, and I'm sincerely scared for my life and the idea of not spending a few more decades with my wife. So the idea of my spending more than the few seconds of my time it takes to reply with a tongue-in-cheek "The algorithm thanks you for your comment" on people who claim that everyone needs to be open to criticism, but then bombard my video with dislikes and comments treating my 10-second throwaway joke as an argument and then attacking that supposed argument (aka the very definition of a strawman arguement). The idea of caring even remotely about showing them some unearned respect that I was never afforded, or responding to each one of them with logically sound arguments in defense of my nonsensical and wholly victimless joke, is the most absurd thought in the universe to me right now. I could've used the time it's taken me to respond with this comment and spent it with my wife, so I hope you understand the sincerety of this response. As for my wanting to unite the fandom, that video spends so much time talking about how nonempathetic those people leaving antagonistic comments are. My making a joke about not caring about their personal opinion about the film is 100000% in line with my Last Jedi video, morally and logically. My joke didn't come from a place of hatred. It was an entertaining and goofy way to tell those people "I don't care, so maybe do both of us a favor and don't waste your time." And that, of course, has been twisted into an attack and a strawman argument and a reason to leave dozens of comments questioning my character and sincerity as a human being. All because I made a dumb joke and refuse to engage with their deciding to be offended by it. And if you, personally, were actually offended by the joke, I really, really do apologize. Like I said, it didn't come from a place of hatred and the characterization was meant to be so absurd that it portrayed literally no one. I had hoped that those would be somewhat apparent - that a rational person would see someone hit "shush" on an exaggerated comment and not take that as a personal attack aimed directly at their very soul - but clearly I was wrong to assume that. If you actually think that my assuming this is proportional to the response the joke has gotten, you're allowed to feel that way. But I'm gonna go ahead and ignore any further comments on this video for the sake of my mental health and out of respect for my own time. Thank you again for taking the time to comment and I hope you understand my intentions now ❤ -John
@@MakeStuffStudios Ahh, this definitely clarifies a lot. I think it mainly came off as bitter, but seeing your current situation I can 100% understand. I also definitely agree and think the most mature course of action now would be to just ignore those comments. Covid-19 is a beast, you should definitely be spending that time resting or with your wife/other loved ones. Thank you for taking the time to respond to my comment and I sincerely hope you can get better, and I wish for the best so that you can hopefully continue to supply us with that quality content. Cheers!
@@MakeStuffStudios If this was your intentions then that's great, but while you were trying to exaggerate. I think if you know poes law that's where the confusion happens cause alot of the maulers and Efaps detractors will unironically portray them in this light. Now that we see in the intentions the joke is good but due to others poising the well you unfortunately come off as just putting in your drop while reading your comment is clearly not the case so heres hoping everything goes well. Ps im sure your free to come on efap.
Really interesting explanation of Rian Johnson's techniques and styles. I had never really considered how much a soft hand and lack of overt special effects can have such a strong impact. Thought provoking and great commentary.
To be fair, I've never once heard anyone seriously criticize the effects of the new trilogy. The plot makes zero sense, but the effects are phenomenal. They're flashy and look fantastic, but were very poorly written.
Subbed. Your editing and knowledge of film is amazing. After The Last Jedi I witnessed how many actually don’t know the art of filmmaking properly. But to be fair it is quite the complex film. It’s nice to see someone with knowledge. Great job 👌
I want to say this cause i've yet to hear this idea expressed as succinctly as im about to: i find a lot of the hate for TLJ ironic as much of the hate ive heard towards it stems from the idea "my childhood hero (luke) didnt turn into the godlike hero and jedi he was supposed to be (in the EU)" when a main motif i walked away with was "who youre supposed to be is irrelevant" - that being said i loved TLJ and walked out of the film giddy as can be
There is a difference between "Luke didn't turn into a god-hero" and "Hmm, would Luke, a guy who redeemed a genocidal tyrant contemplate killing his nephew?"
No, it actually stems from the idea that my childlike hero was turned into something that is completely out of character for him, with nothing but a pathetic 20 second flashback to justify it.
Pelagion I see that as a act out of paranoia/fear that the darkside will return through this boy, and i see that devolution from the noble warrior of ROJ to where he was then as a very logical step for the character
@Geralt of Trivia Yes and it's entirely arbitrary. We have no idea what led Luke to this point, so we don't believe any of it. That's why I call the flashback pathetic. Rian wanted this version of Luke and so he simply made it happen without earning it or putting in the legwork. Also, no idea when Luke "discovered the truth about how the Jedi were really like in the prequels". That doesn't happen in TLJ (would've liked to have seen it though). You're just inventing a better film that didn't happen.
@Geralt of Trivia No, I'm talking about how we have no idea what events led to Luke standing over his nephew, sneaking peeps into his mind as he's sleeping and then igniting his lightsaber on him. He just says that Snoke got to Ben first, which just raises even more questions. And what I'm suggesting here is that Rian COULD have earned this with more screentime devoted to flashbacks and explanation, but instead chose to eat away screentime on support ships slowly getting destroyed during the Holdo chase, and useless bs like Canto Bight. And yes, as you point out, Luke already dealt with the failures of the prequel Jedi in the OT, with Luke being urged to strike down his father, but he resisted that. Luke already went against what the prequel Jedi would've advocated for. My point was that you cannot credit TLJ with this, as it already happened in the OT and in the years between the OT & ST. TLJ doesn't actually explore any more of that. It took place, as you say, BEFORE TLJ, not during it. It is just more evidence of how we don't actually need this trilogy.
So you don't value anyone's opinion if it doesn't agree with yours? wow now that's how you get famous on RU-vid kids, ignore your fanbase if they disagree with you, or even better shush the comments if they say anything which hurts your viewpoint, what respect you have for people, good luck on the youtube channel with this outlook on life.
Of course he values different opinions, he just doesn't want to hear anymore complaints , it's really not that hard to understand. How about you don't take everything out of context and personally, you might Learn something. It's quite simple, obviously making a video like this is going to attract THESE type of comments, so he's addressing the elephant in the room before everyone starts attacking him out of context.
How'd you get these LCD stems? Did you make them yourself? Also fantastic video. I know everyone and their mom is making a video about Knives Out, but I think you'd have an interesting perspective.
Reverb Machine hooked me up with the stems of their spot-on LCD synth covers, which're also available for their Patrons I believe. Link to their stuff in this vid's bio and the pinned comment 👍👍
I'll admit that, personally, I don't like the last Jedi. But I don't agree with the video essays, I feel like it is very close to being great, it just doesn't work for me and I honestly think it is entirely because of the rushed schedule.
