Here's an idea. To stop the shavings going into your pump pour your old oil while the drain plug is out. It should drag the shavings out of the oilpan.

I have been nursing my truck for at least three years with an over sized drain plug. Worked well for about a year and then started leaking again. To the point where I was going to spend 500.00 or more for a new pan. After watching your video, I spent 40.00 and fixed my leak. The finished product looks like it came from the factory. Looks great and no more leaks. Thx for the video

this saved my life. imagine having a 1998 v6 mustang as your only car for a family of 4, and the oil pan threads strip out during a routine oil change. i was so hoping i was not going to have to pull that oil pan. freaking awesome man!

Hello I just want to say I followed your directions to a T. THANK U THANK THANK U. I had a local shop do my oil change. They stripped out my plug and put in a doorman T universal plug. I didnt know to tell them no dont do that. A year later that plug broke leaving the T inside my oil pan. I discovered this because my wife took the car days after an oil change and I happened to look at outside and there was a puddle left where the car used to be. I got under and looked at it and just touched the Uni plug and it cam off in my hand dropping the rest of the oil in the driveway.. I kept the old plug they stripped and couldnt use it.. I used a magnet pen to fish out the old T from the universal plug. and after watching your video I went out got the parts and did this.. Thank you, saved me 600 bucks from having to drop the entire oil pan! $600!!!!

Ron, I just did the repair that you showed, in your video, on a 2002 Honda Civic. Bought the repair kit you recommended and it worked great. The person who owned the car, previously, had a shop try a repair and they used a thread cutter type plug and followed that up with r.t.v. sealer. What were they thinking? Obviously a bunch of hacks!!!!!!!!!!!!

i liked the idea but i found it to late i just retapped to the next size up but my question is what the best way to get the tap centered before starting cause when i tapped the new threads it looked really straight but once i inserted the new bolt i can see it was slightly off but not by much and then bolt hole leaked oil from the side that was not even what is the best way to get the tap centered instead of just eye balling it?

not a good idea to use silicone because the lock tight is on there to keep insert from backing out during oil change, the oring or gasket is what keeps oil from leaking. thanks for the question.

Ron: first of all, excellent video tutorial. Of all the Repair videos for stripped oil pan bolts, this is the best IMHO. That said, I'm helping my friend with his 79 Jeep CJ7 with a 304 V8 and the problem is a little bit different. The oilpan bolt was tightened to much and stripped out in the tightened position. So it spins and spins regardless of whether you're tightening or loosening it. There's very VERY little room between the pan and the bolt head to get anything between them for leverage to loosen it. The oilpan is completely off and easier to work with so you know. My question is: "Could you please provide me any suggestions as to how to go about getting that stripped bolt out the easiest way? There's a "slight chance" once it starts to back out it may catch the threads and come out without stripping them...but I doubt it! Once we successfully remove that oilpan bolt, we plan on using your spark plug repair shown in your video above. Given the facts of this problem, do you think that's our best course of action? The cost of those CJ7 V8 Oil Pans is very expensive! I'm hoping you have some DIY ideas for getting enough pressure on the actual oilpan bolt so that it can begin to loosen and finally be removed? I thank you in advance for any advice & ideas as we are at total stop, while this needs fixing. The rest of the Jeep is totally finished. Thanks much👍🏽. William ~

Wm. Sturman If oil pan is off? you can take a hammer and punch and knock plug backward while spinning the nut side with impact wrench? the other way is to use impact wrench and hammer a flat head screwdriver between plug head and pan to try and get old threads to catch.

@SandCarServices

the tap in my video is a spark plug helicoil tap that is specifically designed to open the hole larger so that the insert can fit it is different then a standard 14 millimeter tap that only cleans the threads up so what you're looking for is a 14 milimeter by 1.25 spark plug hole tap it'll look just like the one I have in the video but without the socket weld it to the end of it

Would my mechanic (I trust him) be able to do this (is it standard?). I think it is a bit out of my league. I probably stripped the pan threads changing my own oil. Actually I was able to torques the bolt just enough before it slipped and had no leaks for years, but last oil change was done by my mechanic and I forgot to tell him about that and now I have a leak. I am guessing they overdid it - either way it was gonna happen soon. I just tried to tighten the bolt and it won't really tighten. How much might this cost? Thanks.

I would think it might be a good idea to run some of the old oil through to the bottom of the engine oil pan to "flush" out any metal shavings that might have been created with the tap.
@SandCarServices
@SandCarServices 4 года назад
That's a great idea and something I started doing after I filmed this video. Also I started tapping hole while oil is draining. That helps shavings come out and lubricate tap at the same time.

I appreciate the video. I consider myself to be a decent shade tree mechanic, so I think I can do this. I bought all the parts you mentioned, but I had a couple of questions before I start. In the 'save-a-thread' kit there are three insert coils. One appears to be the same as the one you install in the video, at 5:36. The kit also has two other coils, one shorter and one longer. Is it obvious which of the three to use, based on the tapping process? I tried to remove the oil pan with the stripped threads (2010 Camry), but I could not budge it at all. Ever seen that?

Most of the time the stripped plug will come out without any problem. When i do fight them i usually take s strong, slim flat screw driver and tap it under head of bolt gently and while prying back away from oil pan i take an impact wrench and spin it off. You can try and do the same thing but use a ratchet instead. Hope this helps?
