Gowdsta. Glad to see other people feeling this way! I've seen way too many comments saying that they didn't like the video or how it was filmed. Oh well
Do you all notice the change of perspective from old (sitting at the table, cannot handle the camera) to a young baby (on the arm) with many steps of ages in between? This is cinematic genius
***** its because the person holding the camera represents cycle of life from an old man look at a woman's butt to an adult father asking his son where his father is to a young adult partying and drinking to a young girl and in the end you find the they were actually celebrating a new born baby
***** I know exactly what you mean it gave me the same feeling. Seeing all those people happy was so genuine made me tear up and I don't even know why.
To all: this is a tribute to Cesaria Evora, a VERY talented Capo Verde singer, who was only recognized/ discovered when she was about 47 years of age. "Sodad", her perhaps most famous single is referred to in this song, as well as the fact that she often performed barefooted (read the captions closely).
saratavares20 My dear arrogant ass, the spelling of the geographical location in question varies depending on the language, e.g., Portuguese vs. English. Grow up, get some education, and thank me later. BTW, the word "later" does not require a capital "L". You're welcome.
Watching this physically hurts me. I listen to this and I dance alone in my room, singing along and clapping. I wish I had a family like this. I want to see children run down the halls. Aunts and uncles, grandfathers and grandmothers. It hurts knowing the moment the song is over I am alone again. I hope to start a strong family someday.
I understand that man, just find someone who loves you for you. Marry them (if you want) and have children, start that family you didn't have. Be that for your children, love them like you wish your family was like. Have them be the same for their children, etc. Then you'll see the great family that's close together that you helped make with your S/O yourself. :)
You always want what you don't have and it always seems better than it actually is. Remember that. Have aspirations sure but don't ever feel sad for not having what you don't fully know.
Stromae is who Kanye thinks he is. A true artist that invokes every emotion and has true talent. I don't need to understand French to know good music, this is not good it's pure excellence.Greetings from Brooklyn NY.
That's what up Amanda! I used to work out on the island (Bloomingdales Roosevelt field) long ass commute from Brooklyn on LIRR. Had enough of it and moved to Rotterdam, Holland.
lmao I work at bloomies nowww ahahahahahah. but yes I agree, stromae has great talent. I want him to come out with an album already. I love this song so much (as the others) but I think the reason why I love it is because it has a familiar nostalgic tone to it. so glad you enjoy as well though!!!
Stromae is an exceptional artist but what does Kanye have to do with this? You have to discredit his name in order to praise Stromae? As much as an asshole Kanye is personally, as an producer and rapper he has made multiple works of art. His album MBDTF remain one of the highest rated album of all time. For a lot of people out there, including me, his music invokes emotion. He is talented. Perhaps Kanye is just not your cup of tea. Is it not possible to enjoy both artists?
It's beautiful the message of the video: The cycle of life from the perspective of the one who's filming every part. From old age, to youth, to childhood.
This is the most beautiful videoclip that I've ever seen in my whole life, it has so much love, so much kindness, so much time and history, our lives are a sigh in this universe, but this video shows why that sigh can be so sublime and beautiful. It´s just perfect how it is. My eyes fill with tears every time I see it.
Then you should definitely see the fan made clip for Taro from Alt-j. The song is a poem about Gerda Taro and Robert Capa, it's beautiful, first time I cried watching a clip. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-S3fTw_D3l10.html&ab_channel=DavidDeanBurkhart
The handing down of the camera through the ages, from an old man who doesn't know how to work the camera, to that of a young child in their mothers arms is really nice symbolisation as to how family works. Little traits and things that were once intristically one person spread throughout the years, quirks, talents, interests and things that these people love, in this instance dance is passed down through the generations and although they're all looking at the same thing it's all from entirely different perspectives and honestly it's amazing to see
Now according to this, this video is very much planned and all but one will think that its just another casual song video with some folks singing dancing and enjoying through!
much wow yeah you're right, it is so unfortunate. I think if they actually gave it a chance, everyone would like it. It is not as catchy as Papaoutai or Tous les mêmes but listen to this vibe, makes me want to move my feet ...
+Paulo Zhan This also is 'cause not everyone understands what the song is about, and know Cesaria Evora. So the lyrics doesn't impact the mind of the listeners. I love Cesaria Evora and knew her songs for a long time, and the lyrics of this song touched me instantly ! That's why I completely agree with you =) !
Cesaria Evora was an absolute legend!!Is this Evora's real family? If not Stromae did an excellent job in capturing Capo Verde culture. He made this video look authentically Cabo Verdean, the multiracial families, the Portuguese interior architecture, the West African flavour. It's so nostalgic!!!!
I think the video was shot in Ghent and the people seem to me like multiracial Belgian or French families. Stromae himself is half-Belgian, half-Rwandese :)
This song makes me feel nostalgic for a culture that was never mine Cette chanson me fait sentir de la nostalgie pour une culture qui n'était jamais la mienne
Anemoia is the a feeling of nostalgia for a time that never was, a place we never came to, a world we'll never be with. Still, I enjoy every second where I feel it, and I hope you can too.
I have to say, I love the fact that Stromae makes himself more of an extra in some of his videos - this one, Ta Fete, and others - instead of the star. You hear his voice and see him slightly throughout but the focus is on the atmosphere. Music is not always about the artist, it's sometimes about the people listening to it. Ok, is it weird to say he's a genius?
I miss this man so much. I do not need to understand french to be influenced by his magic. Music is a language of its own and this man has mastered the language. No debate that Stromae is the greatest artist of the last couple of decades, from beat making to singing to video producing to performing, this man can do it all. One final album pleaase.
I HEARD THAT HE'S WORKING WITH DUA LIPA AND BILLIE EILISH, AND HE'S GOING TO BE RELEASING SONGS THIS YEAR but don't get your hopes too high.. although its hard not too :/
As someone from the PALOP (Communitie of Countries that speak Portuguese Language), I appreciate even more this song, and it is really touching that this women reached every single corner of the world, and not only Cape Verd, Portugal, Angola... Somewhere in the video I hear "Obrigado" that means Thank you in portuguese... and thats really nice! Congrats Stromae!
Fun Fact: Stormae(Paul Van Haver) is occasionally speaking Portuguese, the official language of Cape Verde (where this is being recorded) and where Césaria Évora was born (Note she was born Portuguese but Cape Verde (former Portuguese colony) became independent in 1975 after the Portuguese carnation revolution in 74'). This song can be interpreted as an Ode to Césaria Évora probably the greatest artist of Cape Verde.
This was recorded in "de vooruit" in Ghent. Witch was a socialist movement house building of handlabor displaying their crafts. A cultural house for the common workmen..
As a Capeverdean its cool to see that people from around the world loves and apreciates Cesaria too, and the video looks like a normal capeverdean family reunion
I didn't like all that I saw in Cuba, but the best things were the multiracial people with amazing skin colors and the music everywhere. Even though Stromae's not referring to the same culture, this video makes me think of it :)
Stromae perfectly captured the multicultural family, as somebody who comes from one. Our functions went a lot like this; I was one of those children who used to run through my family's home during parties, barefoot and wild haired in my prettiest pink dress that my mother saved for the occasion. I later became one of those awkward teenagers who wanted to pretend that they were "above" everybody else at that party and sat around the table only to be eventually pulled in for a dance by my mother. Now I'm a 21 year old, about to be 22, taking care of the kids sometimes and helping in the kitchen when I can and dancing however I like, because I know at these events we're at our safest. Our house is an amalgamation of sounds, colors, languages, and cultures, and this video perfectly captures that same household. Thank you, Stromae, for bringing out lives to the screen. You're an artist who will be remembered!
This is too relatable, especially the running around with my hair a mess and with my prettiest dress mom put on me… eventually she gave up and stopped making me wear dresses
So I have just realized that the filming from 3:21 was done by that adorable little girl. At 3:57 the tall dude comes in and hoists the little girl to his shoulders so that she can film higher. And then at 4:09 that other guy takes over the camerawork. At 4:12 is a shot of how tall dude and little girl who has just handed over the camera look like. It's all really really good.
The video concept is about the cycle of life. If you notice the camera man keeps on changing from different periods of a human age, first he is old sitting not knowing how to turn on a camera, telling his wife to move out of the way looking at another woman's fat ass, then he is a married man asking his son where is his mother/wife is, then in the bathroom they switch to a young adult, smoking, partying, and everything else, then it is the young girl's time, she notices mostly children dancing and you can tell from the point of view, after that it is a new born, that the family is celebrating. At the end the old man takes the camera and reveals the new baby being held by the father, and the cycle repeats itself on a faster note after that to end in circles.
The song is sung in French to the Capo Verdean family members of Cesaria Evora who speak Portuguese, so touching and moving. Song and music 🎶 has no boundaries and it's understood by everyone no matter the language.
Well, for the english speakers, the lyrics written here do not justice at all at the "real" lyrics. There are so much powerful, melancholic, in love, and beautiful..
Lyrics !!!
For the people in the comments saying they feel sad after they watched the video, it is probably because you remember a time when you were apart of the video and now it is no longer like that. Or it could be that you envy it because you never had anything like that to begin with. I hope you all have something like this in the future ❣️
This song makes me nostalgic for some reason, remembering my childhood, birthday parties in Haiti where I grew up with my little cousins and friends. Now we're split apart, dealing with adulthood by ourselves, and having no idea how to manage.
+Steffen Nielsen in this clip we see a typical cape verdean family party. All messy and funny, extended family, lots and lots of food and alcohol. Stromae pays tribute to Cesaria Evora and Cape Verde culture
The song is excellent, to me is one of most richest musically. Speak frech would be great but, speak the native language is no necessary to appreciate good music!
This version always sounded so much better than on spotify😂. Man i love stromae. I know its only been a year or so since his last album dropped, but i cant wait another 5-8 years till a new album😭
This song represents so much to me. I see my whole family in this situation with much ease. This brings me joy and sadness for some of my family members aren't here anymore to celebrate with the new ones. Thank you for such a rollercoaster Stromae, from the bottom of my heart.

Ezekiel’s Brother- yeah. Even though I grew up in a typical middle class American family, there were movies and videos such as this that gave me a sort of happiness. One movie that did that was “Because of Winn-Dixie”, and I feel so nostalgic just thinking about all these instances
Actually it's true, I left my hometown in the pursuit of the so called "better life" (which was basically 7 years of verbal, physical and sexual abuse and the beginning of the downhill of my already damaged mental health but meh) now I don't have any memories with my family and the fewer I can remember are slowly erasing themselves off of my memory. So yeah, these types of videos make me feel kinda nostalgic.
for who's wondering the meaning of "oh sodade, sadadi di nha cesaria", it's "oh longing, longing for my Cesaria". "saudade" in portuguese is a name for the specific feeling of missing a loved one. As she was from Cape Verde, she spoke a dialect that mixed portuguese with the one from her african ancestors. Peace from Brazil!
Obrigado - let's say it even better: She was Cabo Verdean and spoke Kriol - and Sodad is a Kriol word too. The islands were under colonial Portuguese rule still when she grew up, we're all still forced to speak Portuguese as official language, but all her music is in Kriol ;) Thank you for sharing this, and let's continue to share her name, music and Cabo Verdean culture, Lusophone and Atlantic connections!
My favorite thing here is at 1:53 when the guy asked "where is your mom?" and the kid answered "dunno" and continued running without giving a shit abt where his mom is :')
For those who don't know, this is a tribute to Cesária Évora, a singer of "morna" ( a cape verdean music genre, wich is considered the national music of Cape Verde ). Cesária Évora passed away in 2011. "Sodade" or "Saudade" in portuguese means "missing a thing", is a deep emotional state for an absence of someone/something that One person loves. Hope, for those who didn't know, I have helped them figuring out a bit of the meaning of this Song. Cabo Verde! Portugal^^ Obrigado Stromae!!
Yes indeed, best known for morna music - which UNESCO also recognized as official cultural heritage. But we also play coladera and Cabo Verde has many different rhythms like funana too. Thank you for sharing this info with the people. Please continue to share and enjoy all the musics of our islands!
viva cesaria ,,,viva cabo verde ,,,viva africa ,,,viva america latina ,,,,,viva el amor por todo el mondo vive l'amour forever ,,,,merci milles fois stromae ,,, on vous aime
the first Stromae song I heard, I just love the way he combines all those elements of the cavaquinho and accordion to create such a languid sound, it's beautiful. Just like the video, it seems chaotic but it's the simplicity of how music can make people want to dance and express their emotions. Not to mention the storytelling in the song, almost an afterthought after all those other elements but just like the rest of Stromae's music, the message and underlying meaning are always fascinating
The most beautiful celebration of a person who found the divine life, I'm sure Cesaria Evora is so proud and happy to know she was so loved by all of us. Merci, Obrigado, Thank you. CESARIA!
@@joaobeloferreira9823 its actually the music genre that Cesaria is known for Its a distint style from her island Sao Vicente in Cape Verde named coladera
2:57 - 3:07 appreciating Stromae is great and all but can we also take a second to appreciate how smooth these dudes were? i replay this part multiple times whenever i see it haha i love how smooth that part was
I’ve watched this video a million times and it gets better every time. The celebration of family, the abundance of beauty. Just mmm mmm good.
This album is one of those few album I love Entirely there's NOT a single song that I don't love, is pure perfection. And this song is a perfect example of it
This reminds me so much back in 2007 when I was seven years old, living in my grandparent's house, and in december, the whole family get reunited, cousins, uncles, aunties, mothers, fathers, brothers, everyone celebrating the last month of the year with music and a lot of food, my little doggie Lupe running all around the house because she loved people so much, the fireworks on the sky and the neighbours waving their hands from across the streets as a way of salute but also as a goodbye to the year that it's ending, everything about this video makes me feel like a kid again in my far away country, my city, my people.
Being young you take these family gathering for granted, those celebrations like they will last forever. Growing up you realise that they're now part of wonderful memories fueling nostalgia and precious joy of knowing how it feels to be loved and part of a family.
I loved the ending of the video, that game that appeared at the end suggest as if the video is actually a home video was leaked to RU-vid, innovative idea
Stromae!! Es increíble! !
