Hello :D just btw , Stromae is Belgian ;) they speak french but are not from France and OrelSan is a French Rapper/ Producer. An other thing, the original Melody is called "Habanera" and yes it is a classic piece of music. :D Hope you have a great day , greetings from Switzerland
Stromae is BELGIAN, not French. Stromae means "maestro" in verlan. "Verlan" is a street slang and consists of saying the words backwards. Stromae's father, his name is Paul Van Haver, was a military man and he was shot in the Rwandan genocide.
Stromae is a genius. Madonna wanted to work with him. He was going to become an international star but he made a very severe burn-out and stopped everything to live a normal family life. He is tremendously intelligent.
The melody, as well as the lyrics. The original song goes "l'amour est un oiseau de boème, il n'a jamais connu de loi, si tu ne m'aimes pas, je t'aime, et si je t'aime, prends garde à toi". Carmen is the story (originally a book) of a bohemian femme fatale. If I remember correctly, the main character falls in love with her, and she falls in love with him, but they have such different principles that they end up messing up each other's life - basically, she's the woman he shouldn't have fallen in love with, because even though she was tempting, she was clearly leading him to his doom (and going down herself as well).
Unfortunately, as often with translations, we lose subtleties and richness with the text. For example when he says '' coup d'hashtag "translate by cut like #. In fact in french" hache "(that we meet in the word hashtag) means an axe. So there are puns that you can't hear beacuse of the translation.
Also there is two meaning to «fais chanter » « Cet oiseau de malheur j’le mets en cage j’le fait chanter » = I’d put this evil bird into a cage and make it sing /or/ force it to confess Also, c’est « Comme ça qu’on s’aime, Comme ça consomme », which sounds almost the same, would be translated by : it’s « how we love each other, how it consumes », « Consommer », like « consume », means both buy (as the translation said) and also pump energy, destroy. Ça / it (= people in a dismissive tone) consomme/ buy; ça / it (=social media) consomme/ destroy Garde à moi, garde à toi, garde à nous : beware of me, of yourself of us… but Garde à vous means both beware of yourselves and « at attention ! » (the military position) Not a play on words but : In the opera Carmen sings « l’amour est un oiseau rebelle… » (love is a rebel bird) « l’amour est enfant de bohème » (love is child of bohème = a way of living careless in poverty enjoying what life gives) and stromae keeps his lyrics similar to these love is the twitter bird Love is a child of consumption (kind of the opposite of boheme life)
@@A-chymotrypsine Faire chanter is a French synonym for "blackmailing" du "Chantage" is "blackmail"... Forcing to confess is more like coercion ... More physical abuse or torture, than threatening to make public an affair... Just saying...
It's really difficult to translate this song because there are a lots of puns. For example : "garde à vous" means "take care of you" and a military posture (when they are all together and say hello with their hand on the head). "c'est comme ça qu'on s'aime (it's how we love) c'est comme ça qu'on somme / consomme (to but, capitalisme, and so on)
So I see many comments about Bizet, Stromae or Orelsan, let me tell you that Sylvain Chomet, the one who did the animation, is also quite famous. He was nominated for the Oscars for three of his animated movies (La vieille dame aux pigeons, Les triplettes de Belleville and L'illusionniste) and also won a bafta for the best short animated movies (La vieille dame aux pigeons). So yeah, another pretty talented guy!
Yes, so sorry! I just got that from a comment. I know now, he only speaks French! (By the way I need to check more out!) My apologies, I did not know. In future videos I have started checking out Wikipedia pages first to find out about the artist. LOVED this song though! Thank you for watching?!
Haha No problem! It's for YOU! Ugh, I was trying to get it up way earlier, I'm sorry. I know it's getting late over there. There is always tomorrow! He is AWESOME! Like YOU!
I love when stranger ( for me cause I am Belgian) are interested about our artist. Stromae is the biggest one in Belgium but in France too. He was the king in the music industry. All the other singer were agree to let him being "special". They know his talent and were probably agree to collaborate with him. Thank you for you video. Hope you will listen to "Papaoutai" and "quand c'est" there is a true big story in both. Thank you again for the interest.
I LOVE STROMAE. His clip for Formidable is absolutely brilliant. I don't know if a not french speaker would catch it like we do though, I'd love a react for that one!
i love this commentary video! it's so cool to hear someone else's perspective even though i'm also american. i'm a huge language nerd and learning french, and i memorized this song to help with learning. your spirit is really cool too, how you are open to learning more about stromae. the comments have told you all the info i know too lol. i'm glad you checked out more of stromae's stuff :D
I feel you, and I apologize. I listen to the community down here in the comments, and I was told he was French before filming. I will absolutely address that next time! (Because I definitely want to check him out again) Some other folks let me know as well. I absolutely understand the difference between speaking french and being French. I do apologize. I could just goole everything, and then there would be no point of having a channel. I like to talk to the people down here, and learn from actual people (like YOU!) Part of the process of learning about all of these new (to me) people I am unaware of! I appreciate you letting me know and watching!(?)
Hello again Andrew, After a long time, YT proposed me again this reaction video, I don't know why (?), but I rewatched so, lol. You raise a very interesting question about the French expression: "crever comme des rats" (die like rats) which seems to be used in English as well. Yes, it's the same expression. But be careful, however, in the particular context of this song and the clip which illustrates the text of it very well, *"we're all going to die like rats"* in the song refers to the origin of this popular expression which takes up the idea of the very famous German tale *"The Pied Piper of Hamelin,"* in which a flute player is recruited by the mayor of a village to hunt the rats which have invaded the city for payment. The flutist hypnotizes the rats to the sound of his instrument, and they follow him to the river, where they drown. The mayor and the inhabitants of the village nevertheless decide not to pay and drive the flutist out of the village. This one comes back at night and plays his flute. He thus hypnotizes all the children of the village, who quietly leave their homes and blindly follow the sound of the flute to the river to suffer the same sad fate as the rats. It's therefore regarding this tale that this expression is used here, which corresponds perfectly to the idea of the text of this song by Stromaë, who, here, draws a parallel between the bird on Twitter and this flute player. Peace, folks. ☮🤗
Congratulations on reaching 2k subscribers :-) It was only recently when you hit the 100, then 1000, ... so pointing it out on a song about social media followers seems quite appropriate lol. They speak a bunch of different languages in Belgium, French is just one of them (the official / main language depends on what part of the country you are in, usually French in the south, German in the east, and Dutch in the north, if I remember correctly). If you ever go over there, try spending a few days in Brugge, it's great in the off-season (too many tourists in the summer). The beer is amazing.
The translation definetely does not do justice to the amazing lyrics he does with all the play words and the word rythmic although you cannot do much better without a lot of effort. Anyway, glad you appreciate this amazing composer/singer/musician, he is one of my favorite artist 😀 keep up the great work mate !
He based the riff on the " L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" ARIA from the CARMEN opera (Bizet)... Thus the name of his song. Its also been redone and called "Habanera" in English. You'd be AMAZED at how much new music is made with whole sheets of classical music. Serving as the base.
7:30 its even worse, the lyrics translation in the captions are...Meh at best honestly When he says " c'est comme ça qu'on s'aiment et c'est comme ça que nous somme/consomment", it means thats how we love ourselfs, and thats how we are/consumate", since the Social Media "culture" is also a results of our Consumerist society Consomme=Consumate, but Consomme, also sounds like Que nous somme=How we are. So the whole thing about the Twitter bird eating and getting bigger and bigger, is also a reference to the saying "You are what you eat" On EST ce que l'on mange, wich is written in this song as "C'est comme ça que nous somme/c'est comme ça consomment" 9:12 Yes, its From the Opera Carmen, the song is "L'amour est un Oiseau rebelle" (Love is a Rebelious Bird). 13:13 in french we use "crêver comme des rats", but a good translation would be to Die a dogs death, but yeah its the same idea.
French dude bit late to the party here, you got all the metaphors right and the intention of the artist explained. I don't understand the dislikes, might be from belgium tho.
Love Stromae! He writes very deep lyrics but usually the accompanying melodies are upbeat and very catchy. This one has incorporated elements of the Carmen opera. You might recognise his “alors en dance”.
He is world famous and started with electronic music and use social media to give people a lesson see his video in Belgium square or canada underground where he pretend to be drunk so that people film him and put on the net but it was a hidden camera video clip for his song "formidable"
just saying this...a french speaking performer...who made it to the madison square garden...doing a FRENCH SHOW...and now you may got the picture how big this guy is in europe
orelsan's name appears in a song that stromae and orelsan cowrote (along with maitre gims) called "avf" which is the french acronym for "f you" essentially haha the line it appears in is "demande a raelsan (orelsan's name but slightly phonetically written) on va tous finir en cage" "ask orelsan- we'll all end up in cages" that song is about politics haha
Dear Natural Reactions, I love the fact you regonized quality. Stromae isn't a singer songwriter, he is an artist. He delivers each song, you should watch a video of some of his life performances, the one in Madison Square Garden for example. Or watch any other video of him. Personally I find "Sommeil", "Quand c'est?" and "Dodo" his strongest songs.
Yes his name is Paul, the bird is Twitter of course, and he plays a lot of words and produce his music mixing styles, rap, carmen is a classical song about love but love that explore passion and hate...
Ugh, I know I’m sorry. I was tricked! Haha I like to not look people up and go into it completely surprised. I’ll mention that next time! Thanks for watching.
Stromae (Paul Van Haver, Belgian BTW) makes his studio versions mostly by himself, as he also directs the visuals, but uses great musicians in concert, and great graphic artists in his clips. Envie de Bizet ? Try Gotainer - Poil au tableau (music inspired by La garde montante, from the same opera "Carmen") : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SghaF3fcflE.html Sorry for the bad French pun. Oh, and the word"consumer" also exists in French and means burn to ashes.
I was tricked about the French thing! My apologies. That’s awesome that he does a lot of the work! I am trying to figure out pun. Bizet? Will check it out, thanks! Wow, “consumer” is spot on! Thanks for watching!
@@NaturalReactions Georges Bizet is the composer of the opera piece "Carmen", the inspiration for the music of Stromae's song. Because his name is close from the french word "baiser" (usually : to kiss, vulgar : to fuck) I made this terrible attempt at a pun ("envie de baiser" : "desire to fuck", "envie de Bizet" : "desire to hear music originating from this composer"). Sorry again. ; )
"L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" from from Act I from Bizet's opera Carmen is the sample song used by Stromae. "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" ( Love is a rebell bird) is also the lyrics used by stromae in the song. Bird represents Twitter and by extension Social Networks The chorus is badly translated in your video, the real lyrics into the song are: That 's the way we love each other (c'est comme ca qu'on s'aime) Thats 's the way we consume (c'est comme ca consomme) to consume (en) = Consommer (fr) costumer (en) = client (fr) to burn (en) = consume (fr) Stromae is compositor so he does all his own music. The way he sings is a mix of classic poetry (lot of old literature techniques about sense, analogy, cultural references, and homophonic sound with verses) and the way of Jacques Brel.
Hey, I love your videos ! Actually, I’m French, and love Billie Eilish, that’s why I first went to your channel. Well I’m sorry to say that but, Stromae is not French 😅, he’s from Belgium. But he’s speaking French, because in belgium you’re speaking English and French 😂. Well, from Belgium there is also Angèle, a great singer, I recommend you “Balance ton quoi”, and lot of her music ! Now if you want to react to French singers, you can react to “Bigflo et Oli” there are brothers, and rappers. There’re awesome ! There is also lot of others French great singers, that others subscribers recommended you ! Thank you so much, continue Billie Eilish videos, there is lots of others amazing songs ! (I know you love the Beatles, so there is a video from the oscars, where she sings yesterday from the Beatles, this makes me cry ! There is also her dance video from Ocean eyes !) I love your videos, and it’s super cool because you’re not speaking to fast and I can actually understand what you say !
Ah, someone said he was French! I didn’t look anything up about him really because I like things to be genuine reactions. Will look back and respond to the rest later. Thanks for watching!
chucku00 Sorry I didn’t know, I’ve been to Belgium just once, and they were all speaking French or English. But yeah you’re right. All I wanna say is that he’s not French but he is speaking French 😂 But thank you 😄
stromae does a mix of rap/electro/pop/synth/hip hop, and i wouldn't classify him as either a rapper or a singer really a song of his that sounds more "singy": dodo a song of his that sounds more "rappy": batard but most of his songs are a mix :)
Yes, my apologies! Since then I always bring up Wikipedia for new (to me artists) I realize now he only speaks French. I was just going off of what I was told. I've been meaning to take a look at him again since I loved this song! Orelsan sounds good too! What do you recommend to check out first? I'll make it happen this week...
@@NaturalReactions so much good stuff I think "suicide social" may be a little intense but the lyrics... I mean it's one of the greatest. To me it's almost a god damn classic If you like more the beat, you could react to "discipline" or "Dis moi", it's more new but less intense "rêves bizarres" is between the two, great lyrics and interesting rhythm And he did a few with stromae like "La pluie" I mean so many great stuff, he also have a duo with an other great rapper but it's gonna be too much recommendations, I'll stuck to at least one of those, they have subtitles so you can follow Stay safe by those time 🖤 cheers mate!
Was Papaoutai ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oiKj0Z_Xnjc.html on the Stromae list? If not, it's a good one. And if you do it, follow up request for the acapella cover by Pentatonix ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ScDIkNcqZjE.html
@@NaturalReactions Ha! I'm in Los Angeles. But, real talk, the only reason I know Stomae is because of the Pentatonix cover of Papaoutai because they are one of my favorite groups.
Oh man, I know I’m so sorry! I like to talk to people down in the comments about things and that is what I was told. I realize he only speaks French! It was still great though! I have been bringing up the new (to me) artists’ Wikipedia pages up from here on out! I’ll make sure to mention that next time!
Do your research!!! He may be speaking French but he's not French, he's Belgian! I get wanting to be surprised (so don't look at any of their videos etc.) but at least do some basic research on who they are.
