Awesome man - happy to hear this helps! If you get stuck or have any questions just let me know - and good luck with the rod. If it turns out and you post a video be sure to shoot me the link. All the best, -AJ
I found your videos about two years ago. I had broken my favorite, most sentimental rod while on vacation in the Smoky Mountains. So I looked up tons of videos on repairs and found one of yours. You gave some really helpful info and I am still using that rod to this day. I just wanted to say thanks. Hello and thank you from Indiana. Tight lines! Finally subscribed, Lol
William - thank you so much for letting me know. I can't tell you how much it makes my day to hear that my work actually helped someone. ESPECIALLY if it was for one of those rods that was sentimental for you - I'm so happy I could help. You made my Sunday. I hope it's alright with you but I'll probably take a screenshot of this comment and put it on my website so that other people can see it as well. If you happen to snag any pictures of fish you catch while using the rod I'd love to see 'em. Tight lines & talk soon!
For sure! Let me know how it goes. I used the pole again earlier this week and caught 4 more. Biggest went 2.5 lbs so the BBFF rod is still doing good work. I'll keep putting those up on Thursday Night Fishing - Godspeed!
@@TheMinimalistFisherman I actually hooked a good one in my kayak fishing tournament video on Wilson SFL! It’s the last catch and I lost the fish but the rod did it’s job! It was just that I tried to pull him in by the line and I pulled the hook out of his mouth! I actually ended up using Bondo to reinforce it!
@@CasualBassGuy no kidding? This was a rod that you fixed using a similar repair and then adding Bondo?? I'm heading to check it out right meow. That's awesome!
@@CasualBassGuy Dude. Thank you so much for sharing that - I can't tell you how good that makes me feel to know that this was useful to someone. Wow. You made my day my friend.
It could POSSIBLY work, but it would depend on the thickness of the blank at that point of the rod. I've only used this method in the middle of the blank but if you want to shoot me a picture through Instagram I will take a look at it: @theminimalistfisherman
It's funny because I had bought a package of that fiber tape and I had done a trial run and it didn't work out so well and I still had it sitting waiting for the next time I was going to try it, so funny I didn't have to wait to try it to be disappointed, I only had to watch this video LOL
Yeah the fiber fix stuff is strong, but it's not strong enough to fix a rod by itself without something bracing the inside of the blank... in my opinion :)
This was a great video n this was a custom made rod n I think that's so cool.i would like 2 knw wat can I use or do 2 fix da fiberglass on a rod of my cause da fiberglass is starting 2 come up n sumtimes I get it n my hand.
Hey thanks Jamie, I really appreciate that. It was a super fun project although I hated breaking the rod... that part sucked after building it! If you have fiberglass coming apart you might have a hard time stopping that. Depending on where it's at you could try to and it down just a TINY bit, and if it's close to the reel seat or lower on the rod in a place that won't flex too much when you set the hook, you could try to add a very light layer of some sort of flexible clear coat to prevent more fiberglass from coming up. I would look at some sort of flexible rod wrap epoxy to start. Hope that helps! Have a great week.
i broke an ultra light rod yesterday it was a carbon blank i used an ice fishing rod and cutted it at the right place so it fit perfectly inside my carbon rod. The thing is that the insert is fiberglass and im worried that its gonna break on one of the end of the insert since the insert seems to be stronger than the actual carbon fiber. i wrapped the rod where the insert starts and finished. just hope it wont break. Its a tiny and very fragile rod.
@@TheMinimalistFisherman i pushed it in place from the open end of the rod (the top section) with epoxy glue. it was taper as well so it fitted perfectly then put the rest of the rod onto the insert with epoxy. The insert comes in contact with the handle part of the rod while they are assembled so there is no play and its very tight. i wrapped it anyway just to prevent it to break and it seems to work perfectly. actually i caught a laker today with this ultra light rod and 4lbs mono and it was tested for real haha
@@nicolasbellemare8958 THAT IS AWESOME! Nice work, glad to hear that the fix worked well for you. I hope you get out and test it even more this weekend. Let me know if you catch any more bruisers :D
So for this project, the thread is just a cover over the fix - straight rod wrap thread (like what they sell on Mudhole.com) for wrapping guides was what I used. Good luck!
Haha! Man I dont but I really wish I did. Looks like we're playin the waiting game for an unlikely hero to step forward and create the remix the world needs! 🐟🎶📀
Great question - I believe they are just sized differently so the upper portion of the rod slides into the lower portion. They reinforce that overlap of the two pieces with... something... I don't know - we should investigate!
@@TheMinimalistFisherman , it’s been a little bit but I’ve finally gotten to the bottom of it. The part is called a ferrule. You measure the diameter where the break is in 64ths of an inch, and order an appropriately sized ferrule. The store I found online that had those plus an amazing selection of other gear is called Jann’s Netcraft. I just put both ends of the ferrule on a little bit ago using some of the Fuji rod repair 2-part epoxy. I’ll let it cure overnight and then wrap some thread around the end nearest the rod tomorrow to dress it up, although it doesn’t really look bad the way it is.
@@mikeingeorgia1 I can't tell you how impressed I am that you came back to share that info with everyone - THANK YOU. I think you should mention to Jann’s Netcraft that we should connect and do some projects and co-marketing together ;) Thanks again for the information, I really appreciate it and I'm happy to hear that you were able to repair that rod. Have a great weekend!
@@TheMinimalistFisherman , thanks! I try to be as helpful as possible. They don’t have much social media presence, if any really. They’ve been in OH since 1941. The ferrule search lead me to them and they have quite a selection of “things I didn’t even know I needed until I saw them” lol.
Ugly stick!"old school" if I can find em! Eagle Claw has dropped the ball for the several yrs! Kast King has a good assortment. I refuse to spend big $ on some PRO? Hawks junk! You probably will.not agree but that's o.k.
Why would I not agree? I'm all for whatever catches fish. I wouldn't think you were crazy if you made your own cane poles out of sticks ;) Thanks for your input, it is appreciated!
Thanks Jake I appreciate the feedback but this has worked well, I was just using the rod again the other day - holding up great. Caught many, many fish since the fix. I could see how a flexible solution would be a good option though: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xp301KmY0Ks.html
