Great lesson! I've been learning on my on for about a year, informally and this is the first lesson I've seen on how to play the upstroke. I never knew that you didn't have to play all of the strings. Also knowing to play up on the "and" is very helpful. Thanks!!

@@Studio33guitar, Thanks for the follow up. I have been working on Tom Misch's "You're on My Mind". I have only found one tutorial online and it doesn't spend much time on the strumming. It seemed intended for advanced musicians in that regard. So I'm hoping to find a tutorial that demonstrates the strumming pattern in more detail. I've watched Eric Blackmon's tutorials...Seal - Crazy, Vandross - Never Too Much - excellent stuff! Regarding technique, I need to improve on D Major. I am having an issue keeping the ring finger off the High E and when I do, there is not enough pressure with the 2nd finger on the High E. I've also unsuccessfully tried barring the 2nd fret with the 1st finger on the B and High E. I'm playing a Fender Classical Guitar. I need more consistency with E, Em, C, Cadd9, A, G, Gm7, Am, B, and F chords. I have rarely tried playing Dm. As a beginner, I've used Chordify and tend to play the open strings on a bunch of songs, since so many of the ones I like have a bunch of bar chords. I'm doing a better job playing the chords on Supposed to Be - Electrogaze, but I don't play the bar F...I play it more like C.

@@Studio33guitar been playing off and on for 4 years but struggling with strumming, just gotta keep at it! I previously had such trouble strumming and singing at the same time. Now I just slow it down and strum per beat, that seem to work but whenever I wanna add upstroke I would mess up lol so need to practice more of that stuff :)

Good idea man,it was really terrible to play all strings during the up stroke.
@francisd2386
@francisd2386 7 лет назад
Thanks, but how does that work with a power chord, say I'm tuned drop D and I chord on the first 3 strings. My upstrokes are kind of clunky if I strum all of them on the up.
@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 7 лет назад
Thanks for the comment! Great question; for power chords, I would recommend a similar technique, where you would use the up stroke only on the higher notes (which would only be one or two of the strings for a power chord). It will sound a bit "clunkier" due to the nature of power chords only using the lower strings. Hopefully that helped

Great video I always struggle with Upstrokes when playing chords does this method also apply with the electric guitar.
@Studio33guitar
@Studio33guitar 8 лет назад
Thanks for the comment! Yes, this technique can also work for electric guitar if you are playing full chords. If you are playing partial chords or power chords, the technique is a little different. Check out this video for more info - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zbqNirLZn8U.html

I don't understand why you think that strumming all the strings in the chord on the way up, just like on the way down, sounds funny. I was thinking just the opposite....that when you only strike 2 or 3 strings on the way up, it sounds funny cause notes are missing. I think guitarists don't want to hit all the same strings on the way up because it's too difficult to avoid the same strings on the way up as were avoided on the way down. i.e. hitting all the strings except for the 6th, or the 6th and 5th, or the 6th, 5th, and 4th, depending on which chord it is. That would take real skill, and I have yet to see a video that teaches how to do it. Still looking.
