My favorite part of this pedal is the expression pedal aspect. You can set the pedal to buffered bypass, and set the expression mode to "volume pedal" mode. So you can turn an expression pedal into a volume pedal if you want, and it even works as a volume pedal with the power off on the Sunset.

I picked one of these up second hand with the trs switch and it still out works all my newer overdrives. They gave me so many new sounds to try out. I love these even if I find them late!

Pete's playing is just inspirational. This pedal would be great on a small board since it covers two gain stages and you can set the favorite as a boost. That's all you need.

People buy Strymon because that's what they like. "Too expensive" is completely relative. It's worth what people will pay for it.

It’s technically 6 pedals so £300 (£50 each) isn’t really expensive. Especially as it only takes up the space of 1 1/2 pedals.

Haven't done math for a while but, I think there's only 81 possible combinations. 4 options: 3 in drive a, 3 in drive b, the brightness, 3 signal path options. 3 to the fourth power would give the number of possibilities which adds up to 81. Haven't math'd for a while so I wouldn't be surprised if I was wrong.

Something I don’t exactly understand is why use an amp not a lot of people use (H&K) as well as a guitar almost no one uses the Flying V. I would have done a fender amp and the Marshall with a les Paul or a Strat/Tele. All of those are what most people play.

@RobChapman You guys have done a lot of cheap vs expensive challenges on guitars and amps and they're rad. I'd love to see some more on pedals. Say pick the most most expensive and least expensive options but add in the most popular at Anderson's as well. Anyway love the videos guys 🤘

the main difference is that the brothers is analog and the sunset is digital. I think the sunset would win diversity of sounds but the brothers would beat it in overall sound and feel

I bought a Timeline after so many great reviews and also trying the presets and how you set it up. Bit like my Wampler Tape Echo after a while I use about two presets. I also have a Dawner Prince Boonar and a Flashback. No more Strymon for me! I agree with Phil Smith if digital stay cheap a la TC electronics minis, you can them all for the price of a Strymon! or if you want everything expensive go AX8 or Helix!

I found using the V guitar which 95% won't ever have screwed up your demo although it is unlike other shops standard Strat and LP demos.

Kevin Case I wanted to like the Sunset more but I think the Riverside is a better overdrive. Much more natural tone. It’s it own thing and not trying to copy any other pedals.

I'm surprised that Flying V has that level of sustain. surprisingly long. Especially because of the fact that it's a Floyd. Even when it's on the base tone it's impressive.

Lee, I have the Sunset. It sounds great but your viewers are saying it didn't sound good. Why would you push the heavy Sunset gain stages through a heavily driven amp, versus using the boosts there? The gain stages sounded great through the clean Marshall, and through my clean and mid-driven Bassbreaker. When you kick the BB amp to high and mix it with Hard or 2-Stage, it sounds like shite. That was the case here too I believe.

Hey Rob, I took some of your advice that you left on another video about getting a license. Unfortunately for me that means having to go to jail for a couple of days to handle some warrants. Well I just got released yesterday and all legalities taken care of in that town, got a new court date next week to take care of the rest. 10:52 Lee, I would argue just the opposite! Most of the time the b-sides are the best songs the artists create! (Examples: Talk Show Host by Radiohead, Fury and The Groove by Muse, Evil Twin and Da Frame 2R by Arctic Monkeys, etc...)

Personally, I feel like there are so many great sounding gain pedals out there that the player has to go out there and find the right one for their play style. Don't get me wrong, I think the Sunset and the Riverside sound great, but I also feel like I've found the right pedal for me.

3:25 Maybe Cap10 hasn't seen it - but the Empress Effects Multidrive does THREE parallel drive circuits and stores a 'fav' setting. But it's huge, pricy and doesn't support MIDI. Come on Empress, make one with MIDI control, and not with that daft, proprietary, box. That goes double for Source Audio - NO PROPRIETARY ACCESSORIES - MORE STUFF = MORE STUFF TO GO WRONG/CARRY/TAKE UP VALUABLE STAGE SPACE. Rant over ;-P

They don't show this, but the Captain has a 3 button overdrive foot switch hooked to a mat under Rob's ass tied to a 240 volt electrical circuit. The Cap hits it to kick Rob into overdrive while he twists the knobs.

I love the Sunset and the Riverside, but am leaning heavily towards the Riverside because the Sunset is just a bit too modern for me and the Riverside can get more classic rock tones which is what I want.

A lot of distortion type pedals seem to run better if you just bypass the preamp and go into the FX return.

It depends on the distortion, like some tube drives/distortions sound good straight into the effects loop since most of them are designed that way (like a pre-amp). If there isn't a good control on the high end you end up with frequencies that don't sound very nice. But even when he was just using it as a boost, (which with most drive channels produces a nice beefier full drive) he just had a sound that "flubbed out" and got fizzy. I think these amps don't treat the low end (take it out) at the front end of the amp, which causes the "flubbyness". It's hard to say exactly why without a schematic or opening it up.

I really wish there was an option to have each "side" of the pedal in a separate loop for a switching system. But nonetheless this is a huge value for variety of sounds in a compact package. With the favorite switch attached, that's 6 foot-switchable tones (not including bypass). The gain-stacking probably puts it ahead of the Elektron for me in the "lots of sounds in one box" category.
