Handel's recitative and aria from the oratorio Jephtha as sung by Stuart Burrows with John Constable at the piano. From a 1971 L'Oiseau-Lyre SOL323 lp.
Stuart Burrows was one of the truly great tenors of the twentieth century. As noted above, simply glorious when singing Mozart. But here we hear a majestic rendition of one of Handel’s greatest arias. Reduced to tears listening to it.
A God given gift to have such a voice and to be able to use it in such a fashion. Not to forget also the genius of the composer, Handel, a wonderful aria. A prophet without honours in his own country where knighthoods have been handed out like sweets at a childrens party; and Stuart remains plain MR while nonentities and the priviliged are regaled as Sir, Lord etc.
