Also if you have not listened to the BBC podcast that Reece and Steve did for this series called 'Inside inside no 9' absolutely recommend- very insightful and great to hear Reece and Steve's banter
@@Stubagful argh! Apologies - Also meant to add if you have not seen there is a good South Bank show about Steve and Reece made while they were filming Series 5 which includes footage of them filming Misdirection.
Honestly would watch Reece and Steve do a episode about anything. I really love all their work with inside no 9 being my favourite of their work. I thought this series was overall really strong and enjoyed every episode.
I'm so glad this show was commissioned for another couple series. It's easily become one of my favorite anthologies next to the classic Twilight Zone series. :) As for fave, it was Thinking Out Loud, but then the duo-only The Stakeout came out and I just...I love those two together and while that one wasn't as strong as Bernie Clifton, I really, really enjoyed it. I feel I'm going to flip-flop on that but yeah, those two are top of the season for me with Misdirection following closely behind. Overall, though, I didn't outright dislike any episode in Season 5.
Composed by Christian Henson who always does an amazing job with his music for the episode. He deliberately wanted it to sound Eastern European. (and the closing scene apparently shocked the string players while they were recording !) He has a RU-vid channel where he has put up great vlogs where he discusses recording the strings for this and how he live scored Deadline
Totally agree with all your comments about all the episodes and I am a football fan. There are only 2 reasons why I don't mind paying my licence fee, this series and no adverts. Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith deserve every single accolade they get . Super smart, Super talented - equally as writers and actors, The film industry must surely be taking notice.
I bloody loved this season. Always so inventive and engaging. Helped by the fact the last episode screened was shot in a graveyard near where I live. lol
I agree wholeheartedly with your comments about Steve Pemberton being a fantastic actor and that he deserves big roles. I'd highly recommend the first series of 'Happy Valley', in which he plays insecure family man who attempts to organise a kidnapping (it's similar to Martin Freeman's role in the TV version of Fargo). He's also appearing in the upcoming 3rd series of Killing Eve, which is a good gig for him.
Steve is a magnificent actor - especially enjoyed his performance as Tony Martin last year. He always more than delivers whatever he is appearing in. Also think Reece Shearsmith is a tremendous actor- if you have not seen him in The Widower or A field in England I highly recommend
I just discovered your channel. I’m always happy to find another Number 9 fan. Now that the series is over I have to say that Thinking Out Loud is still my favorite. Not that it’s the best episode so much- that would be too hard to quantify. But it still affects me and makes my heart pound.
I think the best part about this show is that all the episodes you didn’t like, I loved, it’s a show for everyone, I didn’t really like misdirection, mainly because I fucking hate magicians, but I thought loves great adventure was probably one of the shows best. Such a versatile show!
Hadn’t watched Psychoville when episode 2 aired, still really enjoyed it. Then after actually watching Psychoville I rewatched Death be not Proud and loved it ten times as much. Loves Great Adventure was still my favourite, though.
I never watched Physcoville till recently, I still loved Death be not proud, even though at the time I never saw Physcoville. It was a great epsiode and probably one of my favourites.
I could see what they were trying to do with the metacommentary on whether brexit still matters but whilst ratings are up the quality has sadly fallen.
I've never seen Psychoville, I've always wanted to see it but never have. I had no idea that those characters were from it in Death Be Not Proud, and yet I (and my parents who I watched it with) all fucking adored it
Doctor who needs to do more Shit like this. Stuff like midnight and heaven sent. New setting every week but trip it the fuck back!!! The Tardis is to much pressure for most writers when restricted to 45 minutes. Chibbers needs to take a look at how this show is structured. Inside no9 is a very similar show in terms of the anthology aspect but it feels like Doctor who is going to much for black mirror mood when that isn’t playing to the BBC’s strengths.
My series 5 ranking 1. Thinking out loud (i absolutley love it- expecially reeces part) 2. Misdirection 3. Death be not proud 4. The steakout 5. Loves great adventure ( i genuinely cried watching the scene between reece and steve) 6. Referees a W****r
This is a show I watch to try and be a better writer and while I think series 4 is the only series that has been all hits I did really like most of these, with Love Great Adventure and Misdirection as favourites for me. Interested to see your take on thinking out loud because honestly it was almost great but I feel the explination was a little blunt compared to what they usually do.
And it was great this was the series that finally won the series a much deserved best comedy BAFTA. Interestingly in a recent podcast with Alex Zane Reece Shearsmith said that 'Death be not proud' was the episode that the BBC submitted to BAFTA for consideration so it was sort of a win and validation for Psychoville too for Steve and Reece (Reece also got a best male comedy performance nomination for his performance as Maureen!- they really should do double nominations so Steve could share nomination - he made this point when he won a BAFTA )
I DESPISE football but I found The Referee's a W***er fantastic As a person who is familiar with psychoville but hasn't seen it, death be not proud is one of my favourites Love's great adventure... sure did exist Misdirection was great and the twist was so clever Thinking out loud was pretty bad I'll be honest The stakeout is by far my favorite episode of the show
I fully get the personal taste thing. The Refs a wanker did NOTHING for me, but i respected it and thought it was funny and charming in the parts that i did get. My dad, on the other hand, LOVED the ep and out of 5 seasons he said it was his Favourite ep. My personal new fav was the Stakeout cause im a huge vampire fan but it felt ok to leave the harrowing behind and move onto a new fav cause Pemberton and Shearsmith are constantly delivering new and exciting eps. I think its so amazing that you can create a show and most folk will have a different fav episode because they like Demons, or vampires, or murder mysteries or family dramas and thats honestly something that NO ONE else writing for tv can say.
Thinking Out Loud is probably my least favourite episode of the show tbh. The ending reveal is so poorly done, it's just 3 straight minutes of exposition. I wish they'd written it in a way that left things more ambiguous, or that allowed the viewer to figure things out for themselves. It's a classic example of 'tell, not show'. I know they're smarter than this, and it honestly comes across as if a higher-up told them to put an explanation in because it was too confusing. Otherwise it's just embarrassing.
If they had visually shown her with the clipboard and the post it notes, drawing lines between the letters in Aidan, Diana and Nadia, and Galen and Angel to show they're anagrams, and THEN have her switch accents, at least that's a visual reveal for the audience to work out. Outright just being told "You have multiple personalities. One is your resentment for your father. One is the nuturing you looked for. One is the singing that blocks it out. I am the rational mind." is so, SO lazy. I'm really surprised Stuart liked it when it was handled so badly, I figured he'd notice and was expecting his review to come up with a way to fix it with visual storytelling.
Spoliers- episode 1 Martin (the main referee played by David Morrissey ) set up the whole thing so that City (the team he supports) could get promotion to the premier League Episode 3-Julia (the mother) ran over the loan shark who was threatening her son - that is why she needed to get her car repaired (there are other clues too)
They did sort of do a crossover in the League of Gentlemen anniversary specials at end of 2017 when Tubbs and Edward are living in flat no.9 (they even included the hare that appears in each inside no.9 episode)
re: Thinking Out Loud, i kinda wish I could unsee it and rewatch it without the voiceover part - because it felt a bit overexplained at that point. I want to know if it still would have felt that way *without* the explanation. Also really love the subtle Ghostwatch reference in Death Be Not Proud - that "these are her eyes" line.
thank you so much for this- lifting my spirits in these strange days. you may be interested to know that it was the BBC that held the series back last autumn as apparently they see it as a winter show . Also fun fact - Steve and Reece write the Stakeout as an episode that was supposed to be cheap in a few days in late 2018 when the BBC said a script they originally submitted was too expensive . Love the photography and music in this episode which along with Love's great adventure were my personal favourites
That's odd though cause if they started it mid December, finished mid Jan that's still winter That and I coulda used it to lift my spirits a bit in December given how fucking miserable that month was in Britain
Hooray!... (Eh, we still want Big Finish! (No pressure; We all know you have your own things going on, and of course, you always tend to be more passionate doing the video that you're actually interested in doing.) Just letting you know, so that you don't forget! :)
Would you be willing to do discussions/reactions to non Chibnall Torchwood episodes with 5 Who Fans or Council of Geeks as your Chibnall video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XrfBGYcgTQA.html is one of my favourite videos and since I've been half binge watching Torchwood I would like to see you react to some of the other episodes, especially in seasons 1 and 4, they seem to have a lot of ammo for your kind of comedy. Also are the full versions of each episode still on your patreon?
I love football but 'The Referee's A..' is a weak episode. People assume it's because they don't know anything about the subject matter but really it's that the episode is not interesting
Weirdly, I absolutely love football but I still didn't find The Referees a Winner that great to be honest. I think scripted things to do with sport in general to be not as exciting or interesting as the real thing. So yeah maybe you didn't like it because it just generally wasn't a great episode rather than the fact you don't like football. I absolutely love Thinking Out Loud and Misdirection the most.
I full on hate episode 5... after everything that happened with Trisha Paytas and DissociaDID and the movie split. It felt like a big slap in the face. Not only is there a killer alter but also they don't dissociate they just switch which is completely inaccurate. Usually I wouldnt care but just because it was aired when all this was happening is just insane
I thought Love's Great Adventure was the one truly good episode in this run. The rest ranged from so-so to thoroughly dull (The Referee's a Wanker) and truly dreadful (Thinking Out Loud). Personally, I feel this series peaked at least two seasons back. Enjoyed your video, though, as always.
Currently half way through series 6 now in 2021... It does feel that the show has declined alot as I loved series 1-4, but found 5 very disappointing, and 6 even worse.
as someone with DID i actually really hate Thinking out Loud. It really plays into stereotypes and i was just constantly rolling my eyes as soon as the twist was revealed. it seems no one can write a story about DID without having the system do some terrible thing because of an alt. just felt very insulting and i was really disappointed in the episode.
I was hoping to get more out of it, like a twist within a twist within a twist sort of thing, especially with the whole magic/illusion background. It felt like a lesser version of the Riddle of the Sphinx episode.
I didn't bother with this one. It's too hit and miss a show and - from what I've been told - this series was mainly a miss. *Also, the obligatory twist.* I bloody hate the obligatory twist.
I thoroughly enjoyed Series 5; the writing and performances from Reece and Steve were excellent as usual. Each series has progressively improved and this programme deserves greater public recognition in my humble opinion.
