I completely agree. I discovered this series a week after I came home from the hospital (two weeks ago), having had two surgeries to remove a brain tumor. That episode was brought up as THE episode to watch in the video I saw discussing it, so it was the first episode I watched. The entire episode had me tearing up, with the ending leaving me speechless. I have no idea if this tumor is malignant or benign, if I have years or months, but that episode spoke to me in a way I've never experienced before. The timing of me finding this series, and watching that episode first...amazing. I will recommend that episode and this series to everyone I know.
bernie clifton's dressing room is a beautiful story , that eerie quality it has is so haunting and the acting is phenomenal.. When I first watched it I had to repeat it two more times, It's that good.
It is such a powerful exploration of the nature of friendship and the choices we make in life . Two astonishing performances- so happy Steve got the BAFTA for his portrayal of Len
I came into contact with this series through my Audiovisual Translation master's degree. We had to translate the first 3 minutes of "Zanzibar" into Spanish. The iambic pentameter was the hardest part, because the point of the episode was the Shakespearean poetry and we had to keep it and get creative with it (there is no iambic pentameter in Spanish). It remains one of my favorite TV episodes ever due to its sheer level of creativity.
Great video, and I'm glad to hear someone else giving Inside No 9 the attention it deserves! I've been a huge fan of Pemberton and Shearsmith since League of Gentlemen and I honestly think it's one of the best and most innovative shows around at the minute. Also, well done for managing to discuss the episodes without spoilers! I'm working on a No 9 video myself at the moment, so it's quite refreshing to hear someone else's thoughts.
I honestly have to thank you for this review. If I had even heard of Inside No. 9 before it was only in passing. This review made me decide to look up the series and here in the US the first couple of seasons are on Hulu. I decided to give it a go, and wound up binge watching both the seasons available, although I did take a short break after 12 days of Christine. Seriously amazing series and I'm sorry I hadn't caught it sooner, but thank you for making this review so I finally did give it a watch.
Thank you for introducing me to this franchise!!!! This is some of the tightest writing and direction I've seen on TV. Its like the best bits of The Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Black mirror, and Frye and Laurie had a collective love child and named it Inside No. 9 And I'm glad I took your advice and binged the first couple seasons of The League of Gentlemen first - to gain an appreciation for their style before diving into No. 9 And the emotional range of the show is uncommonly far-reaching, going from guffaw-funny, to shocking, to heart-rending. 12 Days of Christine choked me up as bad as the first 10 minutes of Up. Jesus. Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton are geniuses. So happy to comment here to document my appreciation. Thanks mate!
I watched this list last year and then went and watched the whole series, buying it all to watch...thank you so much for bringing this to me!!! My friend from across the pond and I discuss every episode now...
On first glance this didn't seem like the sort of thing I would be into but the more you talked about each episode and mentioned the twist the more interested I got. Now I have to go hunt down a place to watch it! Thank you for introducing it to me!
Thank you for discussing some of my favourite episodes I have not really seen discussed elsewhere such as La Couchette, The Bill, Tempting fate and Tom and Gerri. Also absolutely agree with what you say about Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room- it stays with you long after first viewing. Thank you for also for praising Pemberton and Shearsmith's astonishing acting as well as their writing
I had never heard of this show. Having binge-watched your reviews, I thought I'd check this video. Having seen this video, I thought I'd check the show. And I binge-watched that as well. Absolutely fantastic. Question: Why are some British shows only 6 episodes per season? Anyway, thank you so much. I love the unique style and brilliance of the show.
im really glad you enjoyed the show thats exactly why I did this video and with the episode amount thing I'm not sure why, but I suspect its a BBC thing
Billy, I think it's always been the standard, 6 episodes per series - Fawlty, Blackadder etc. It sort of fits with the US standard of, I think 13 weeks per season, which fits with a quarter year - the 6 for the UK is almost an eighth of a year but with room to fit something else in if something important and topical happens (like, topically, a royal death) and the BBC or whoever have to postpone something. Not sure why it's 6 rather than, say, 12 though. I suppose 6 is less of a gamble, in case it's not a hit.
The ending to the video was authentically creepy and inventive,I had never heard of this series before today, but I intend to find it on RU-vid.It sounds fun, particularly the more horrific episodes,as I’m a horror fan.
I was introduced to League of Gentlemen by my Manchester co-worker while teaching English in Taiwan. (He also introduced me to a number of other British programs while I repaid in kind with some American stuff, like Firefly and Mystery Science Theater 3000.) Needless to say, these guys stuck with me, as did Royston Vasey. I am excited whenever I see any of the Gentlemen anywhere and will now seek out Inside No 9 to scratch that itch. I did notice them in Horrible Histories as well, I think starting season 3..? Not sure. Was lovely to see all 3 of them together again, even for such a small skit, though reoccurring. So, ta muchly for this, I'll check it out!
The beauty of this show is that *none* of the episodes are better by a landslide: at least half of the episodes are just as good - if not better - than 12 Days of Christine. Entirely based on your personal taste isn't it. Tom & Gerri was easily my favourite, but it really is tough to choose a favourite when every episode is so good.
@@Lucas-kn4zu for me the top end of the show is dominated by episodes that are, indeed, at very much the same level, but the insane impact of Christine's twist ment that I had to put it above the others, because I haven't been left with my mouth open by anything other than that and the film American history X. Besides, the acting is great and I appreciate the drawn back amount of comedy and the way they managed to put such a substantial part of someone's life into 30 minutes. All throughout the episode, that technique feels like just something to advance the story of Christine's life, and in that regard it tricks you into a false sense of security before hitting you with that reveal, and no other episode has left me that amazed. I believe Heaven sent to be the best DW episode for the same reason: everything builds up to this insanely impactful and thought-provoking ending masterfully, which is just a style that I prefer to anything else (though I probably would put Tom and Gerri in a close second, since it tricks you twice).
Being a HUGE league of gentlemen fan, I must say that I was rather pissed when I had to stumble on this show a few years ago. I'm pretty sure someone should've notified me. But that might just be the draw back of living in the states where just about anyone you talk to is "don't you mean league of EXTRAORDINARY gentlemen?" No, Karen, I don't. I'm so glad you're drawing more attention to this amazing show!!! Diddle diddle dumpling still makes me cry everytime I watch it.
A Quiet Night In is marvellous, maybe my favourite thing about it is that, given that it's a silent episode, Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter is in it. My favourite, however, of those I've seen so far (still catching up), is The 12 Days of Christine, which is just shatteringly brilliant (no, I didn't see it coming). I understand you leaving it off your list as there are so many good ones to choose from. Thanks for the Gaslight info - I never knew about that. And you have to credit 4 people for LOG - Jeremy Dyson was also crucial to its success, though not on screen.
So glad this video was made! I would love a longer video though, with more spoilers and extended thoughts on the episodes chosen.... or all episodes.... I wish......
Interesting list. I love your choice of Dead Line as No.1. However, my No.1 choice Zanzibar was not in your top 10. I don't blame you though as it's so hard to choose when every episode is amazing!
Hi thank you for discussing this great show! Just to point out there was a fourth 'creator' of the League of Gentlemen -Jeremy Dyson. He did not act in the show (although he did have cameos) but who was one of the four writers (usually alongside Mark Gatiss). Jeremy Dyson also personally created characters such as the Dentons, Pops, Judee Levinson and Berenice Woodall
Very Good reviews, agree with a lot, watched waiting to see the twelve days of Christine at number one, by a mile it's the biggest triumph so far. It's great how Opinions vary. Great video.
nice vid, picking top ten inside no.9 episodes must have been not easy, love the ending, i was introduced to shearsmith and pemberton through psychoville, it seems as if it's not as popular as inside no.9 or league of gentlemen, a real shame cause it's really quite good
@@deusdeaconReviews Oh enjoyed it a lot, Actually right now i'm watching (Love's Great Adventure)episode. PS: watched all your reviews, You are funny as hell! Your reviews are amazing, love your work. Thx.
9:25 Well, I must say, sir...you've certainly piqued my interest. 14:40 As somebody who's studied the Occult for some years now, I would have bolted out the door as soon as she said that name. O__O
@@jackryan2612 Andras is the name of a powerful demon mentioned in the Lesser Key of Solomon; a demon so malicious in nature until he is infamous for actively trying to kill the very people who summon him. According to Occult myth, if the conjuror makes even one mistake it could easily be his last.
I've seen most of things these guys are in but I've never heard of this. Gonna have to give it go as Reece Shearsmith and Pemberton are fantastic and are great at creating unsettling moment. Looks like they are supported by some top class actors in this as well.
Saibotronian he used a clip from the live episode deadline which goes wrong because of a ghost so they show another episode which has a ghost from the bbc crash it
Saibotronian basically they tried to do a live episode but the audio glitched out so they had to broadcast that episode instead which was then hijacked by a ghost
That why I made sure the thumbnail says "favourite" as opposed to "best" because this series has such a variety of styles, its incredibly subjective on what one person prefers and another doesn't.
The saddest episode has to be bernie clifftons dressing room, the scariest episode by far was deadline and the most shocking one EVER has to be the devil of Christmas
Just started watching this as I loved the League of Gentlemen and I fully understand why the tramp one is on it, was great throughout and the end was just perfect
@1:01 "What's all this shouting ? We'll have no trouble here ! ". I know I have seen this, (he is speaking to a man with a backpack who has come to the village to visit either a friend or uncle) but as I browse Steve Pemberton's IMDB list i can't remember which one. I know I saw the HHGTTG, Doctor Who, and Mr. Stink. And that it is not from those shows.
It's the league of gentlemen, the character is edward tattsyrup played by reece shearsmith and that character says those words almost every episode regardless of whether there is shouting or even a person in the shop.
@@deusdeaconReviews seeing Gemma Arterton reminds me of The Voices with Ryan Reymolds, a dark comedy that i highly recommend. It is my favorite 'talking dog" "talking cat" movie, as they only talk when he is off his meds. It also includes severed heads in a refrigerator, that speak words of encouragement (only when he is off his meds).
Apparently 'the missus' in "A Quiet Night Night" is Charlie Chaplin's granddaughter. They had to ask his estate if they could do this style of slapstick and she said only if she could be in it. :)
Yes Oona chaplin is in the episode, but the idea anyone could have ownership on a style comedy is ridiculous, reece shearsmith has said that the casting was "almost an accident but maybe a little nod" it was NOT intentional homage at all.
@@deusdeaconReviews fair enough, it's just what I'd heard on the grape vine is all. It was the first episode I ever saw (by accident while channel hopping) and I was hooked by the end. I watched the Halloween episode with my partner and afterwards we spent nearly an hour trying to wrap our heard around what we'd just seen.
An interesting if somewhat unusual top ten, I think it's generally accepted that 12 Days Of Christine is seen as one of the best, or the best episode. Anyhow, I loved Inside No. 9 but I feel the show has deteriorated since Series 5 really...Series 6 has not been that good at all sadly....but yes, for 4 series it was the best thing on TV. My Top 7... 1.- Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room 2.- 12 Days Of Christine 3.- Riddle Of The Sphinx 4.- Zanzibar 5.- Tom and Gerri 6.- Cold Comfort 7.- The Devil Of Christmas (absolutely hated that one at first, THAT ending... but really like it now).
I love most of the devil of Christmas, but it's one of two episodes in the series where the twist only works because the rest of the episode lies to you, the other being the help line episode. I just can't enjoy it as much after seeing the end
Does it lie to the audience though ?, Perhaps a Lie of omission, but I saw it as manipulating a persons assumptions, So they think they are watching one thing but its actually something quite different and like I said in the video there are clues, all be it small clues but they are there.
So would Death Be Not Proud be in the top 3 now 😅 I'm still not over it Like it took a lot to beat the feeling of watching Dead Line Live but I think that maybe just maybe they've gone and done it
I'm guessing in Tom and Gerri it turns out Gerri isn't real and maybe Miggs is? Or they're both not real and Miggs is Tom's subconscious trying to show Tom she isn't real? Anyway Gemma Arterton is hot as hell.
@@deusdeaconReviews Lol, fair - I half expected you to comment pointing out I couldn't count and the twist was that (despite the title) there *were* only nine. I've died 2-3 times and nearly died a fair bit more because I'm listening and half-watching while gaming lol
Really? A Top 10 that has no 12 Days Of Christine or Riddle Of The Sphinx anywhere but has The Harrowing in it? Widely considered one of the worst episodes or certainly one of the most underwhelming. I mean the entire series is fantastic as a whole but I feel this seems a bit jarring. Personally dead line didn't really do it for me.
and this is why I stipulated as my personal favourite episodes, cause i found 12 days dull and underwhelming and sphinx too clever for its own good, but again thats just my opinion.
