We got to this job expecting the scaffold to be set up. Yeah right.
.My son, Jason, noticed how unstable these ladders were and, fortunately, added a few ropes to anchor them firmly for us both. Jason is a rock climber as well as a plasterer; he also climbed the Half Dome at Yosemite.
His work with ropes allowed me to apply the stucco around these newly installed windows without too much fear.
Yes, it’s legal to work off ladders and ladder jacks; however, scaffolding is a hell of a lot safer.
LOL, Jason is also a plasterer. I should have sent him up to plaster this window, except I don’t know how to use the camera.

Like the way you laid the jacks up one in front one behind. I usually do both behind and have the ladder run up to the roof and secure them up there so no moving.

Jason, secured them as he is also a professional rock climber, and realises the risks both of us would be under. Failing hurts. 🕵🏼

Excellent video Kirk, I am always keenly interested in the honesty you show in your videos...you dont gloss over the dangers we all face in the workplace. I havent read the comments below yet (will do that after i have written this), however anyone who grumbles at you for this should take note of one thing...i dont think i have seen too many of your videos where you are not wearing a back brace. For me this video is showing what sometimes is necessary done to get a job done even when it bends the rules of both safety and indeed common sense. I am impressed that you are willing to go the extra mile, however because you are apply render (which requires considerable pushing), the danger in my book would have me making a more substantial effort to prevent fall in the opposite direction to that which i am applying stucco. In Australia our maximum safe height without appropriate fall protection is about 2 metres. As you dont have a guard rail to prevent falling over backwards and you are upwards of 4 metres off the ground I am quite sure this isnt doable in Australia under the law. I am not sure of our exact legislation requirements but i suspect we would require certification for the erection of scaffolding above this height as well? (with the exception of small mobile scaffs) A simple solution to this circumstance, using my limited experience in having constructed and acrylic rendered an external retrofit 12 meter high lift shaft in Many Sydney 3 years ago, would be to add an industrial rope access harness and 2 ropes suspended from above. I use Petzel industrial rope access gear and for the sake of about $2-3k it is worth my life even if i only use it once a year. Obviously one is supposed to have completed training courses in "safe working at heights" and "industrial rope access" to do it legally, but even illegally (learning from youtube videos) it still better than a ladder and plank. In household situations, to avoid having to climb up on the roof, I used to throw the ropes right over the top of the roof/ridge and anchor them down on building foundations (or sub floor framing etc) on other side (sometimes this needs a bit of improvisation in order to successfully achieve due to the direction of the roof ridge above). Of course another solution when the ground below doesnt really allow for scaffolding is a cherry picker (if access is available for cherry picker to get close enough) EDIT, gee that building finish next door at the 13.45 mark is a shocker of a finish. Hope that wasnt one of yours! Thank you for your video Kirk..."and as usual, see you on the next one"

Howdy Adam, some of the things I do to put food on the table are even more scary then this, those we don't film as I wouldn't want anyone to try some of the stuff we do. I prefer real scaffold, all my contractors know this, however sometimes I do homeowners a favor by just getting it done with what they have erected at my rick. If I would have told this fella to tear the current staging down and pay an additional 800 bucks for scaffold that is much safer, he would have more than likely run me outta town. Best wishes, Giordano’s teaching video’s

Great work as akways Kirk!! I have a project coming up & i want to get your opinion!! the finish is going to be a rough dash finish but the feature wall is made out of blue board/cement sheeting!! can you dash finish straight on blue board/cement sheeting one coat or it still needs a base coat then a dash coat finish??
@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 лет назад
Howdy Michael Dude, usually when i hear the term blue board I associate it with interior use. However It appears you're referring to some type of exterior board, if it were me I'd first apply a thin coat of stucco with a heavy sand aggregate such as used for concrete work called clean coarse washed if your skill level is high and the dash is fine you may be able to just float it to match what you desire. I have done this in video about 100 times, of course if it’s a heavy dash you will have to dash it, a dash will attach to a floated sand finish much better than any boards. See video below, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yRyuxp99bAE.html Cheers and have a happy new year me friend, Kirk giordano’s rendering any and all stucco repairs

@StuccoPlastering
@StuccoPlastering 7 лет назад
Howdy John, when I got there the ladder were too far apart for my taste so Jason shortened the span, to under 8 feet, plus tied the bottoms so they could not kick out either way. Plus tied the metal plank to the ladder jacks then tied the jacks to the rungs so i wasn't relying on just a bolt for the strength to hold my weight, granted I'm only 150 pounds and this system can hold well over 300 pounds. This system also allows for two guys but I was too nervous to allow any more weight on it even with all the precautions. Cheers and have a happy new year my friend, Kirk giordano’s window repairs

Howdy Ryan, one would think so but the fact is I'm a licensed plastering contractor, and if I'm foolish enough to work off ladder jacks for the same dough as I charge with working off scaffold, the only pay I'd get if I fell would have been "woo, sorry dude, you should have know better than to do that."
