I have a 2003 model 160 Honda plain engine with the manual choke lever on a light frame , gave twenty dollars for the mower and transferred the Honda engine on a light frame . Just a trim mower , all I did too it was just clean the carb and the rest is history . That was three years ago , easy to push and pull , the more you have on one the more things too go wrong too . I can live without the clutch model . Great training video - thanks - keep it up . Saved your video just in case I get one to work on in the near future...
I agree, the less parts the better if maintained well. I always have a hard time to understand why people abuse their expensive equipment so often. I see it all the time. At least change the oil once a year on an average lawn, if bigger change it more often. Oil the moving parts like wheels cables etc. for every use or so. Great video. Many thanks.
I found your channel a few weeks ago and have been binge watching. I've learned so much about small engines from your channel. Thanks for making such well made videos
Thanks a million. My 198X or late 197X HRA214SX. Other than a drive cable that was replaced under warranty and 1 spark plug, the air filter, oil yearly, and blades and blade holder, I've replaced nothing else. I'm very mechanically inclined but I was hesitant to tear into the blade clutch. This video was the exact repair. I was able to free it up but will replace the bearings.
When I have equipment with sealed bearings I occasionally remove the seal and re grease them, then replace the seal. Heat plays havok with them and off brands usually don't use good grease and or enough.
Absolutely perfect description and analysis without giving hrs of unnecessary rambling. Any unhandy man can follow and understand your inspection, reason for inspection and solution. I have a Husqvarna L221a w/Honda CGV 160 Pull cord with exact problem and was able to follow these instructions and apply towards my mower. Thank you and I'll be following for upcoming videos. 😊
Super informative and helpful video. Great production quality and although some of the terms were over my head I appreciated your attention to detail. Now I have a list of about 100 things to check on my Honda lol. Thanks again!
i love watching your videos. May sound strange but i love mowing my grass and my lawn mower. I do most of the work on it. You have such a great channel & i have learned a great deal from it as well as being entertained. Thank you !!
I love the Honda blade clutch system, and wouldn't be without it. That particular model has the single-lever rear height adjuster, which is about the worst design aspect I've ever seen on a Honda; the connecting bar between the rear wheels is the lowest component, and drags on any uneven spot in the lawn. Doublewide6 has a very clever method of swapping out those clutch bearings. The 'bearing in the freezer' trick helps for re-installation.
I almost have the same Honda lawn mower, the only problem I have with mine (I wrote this comment in some other videos) that the air filter cover falls off while I'm mowing, very frustrating,I do put back the right way making sure the filter it's in all the way and it falls off again.I end up putting a rubber band around the cover, problem solved.
great video as usual... I keep all your videos because I started up a small engine repair and always reference your videos especially your 2 cycle videos. Learning as I go... Just an old Vermonter..
A great video. I have a bit older version of the HRR mower (from 2006), I bought it used in 2016, and yes, it has the clutch system, and is self propelled. I do keep up on the maintenance on it for the most part by keeping stabil in the gas as much as possible, and I did change the oil I think at the beginning of this season, and it's gotten a new carb and mulching blades, and a whole new rope recoil mechanism. Outside of that, it's been a reliable as they come, for the most part. As to the clutch system, I have no issues with it and much prefer it to the actual kill switch/dead man's bar where you let go of the dead man's bar, the motor stops, then you have to yank the rope to restart, every time you empty the bag. I use my bag early in the season, mulch the rest of the season myself. When I need parts, my local Ace Agrishop has them, I order, and go retrieve and install. Prices so far are very reasonable and it's just up around the corner from my house so a win, win situation. Just recently had to replace my now dead Troy Bilt weed eater for a Stihl version that I got at that same Ace Agrishop. They rock.
As long as you keep the thing lubricated than it is not going to fail on you, this is also an older model, the modern Honda mowers have an improved clutch system
Thank you for sharing the video. I’m thinking I would have replaced the engine oil, then get the engine going to see what it was like before replacing too many parts. Regards
Thank you very much for the video. I'm hoping that the bearing is my issue. My pull cord will not pull at all. I was thinking it may be a seized piston. I always did proper maintenance, however the lack of use for two years didn't help. Always stored in H&C shop. Hoping it may be a bearing. Mower is over 25 years old. However, had always run well. I'm hoping your video helps me. Thanks Robert TN
Just a heads up: My pull string was stuck. I watched this great video, and halfway through, I realized that the blade was completely covered in giant chunks of lawn clippings that were holding the blade in place.
Do you have any videos on how to attach a governor spring on a Ariens ST724 Model # 924048 snowblower? I'm getting desperate. We have a ton of snow coming. Took the carb off because it was gummed up, my son cleaned it but didn't put it back together and now he's out of town.
I've had to replace the lower clutch bearing on a similar Honda HRR2165VXA. An NSK brand bearing was less than $12 from Amazon with tax and delivery. I usually freeze the bearing for an hour or so before tapping it in.
I bought a new Honda Izy 416, all assembled fine, except the pull cord only moves a very short distance.. and I can't mount it to the holder on the handle, will this only move all the way once it has oil?
you mean to remove the bearing? I used a socket and a big hammer to take it out. Same method to put it back in, but I used a different sized socket to not damage it.
It needed a speed adjustment because Honda runs them max at 3,800 when we all (or at least me) knows they will run 4,200 all day err day. Those precious RPMS really help out in the back 40 and it probably does cut the engine life down 10% if your not running synthetic 10-40 or 15-50 in hot climates.
I'm with you in that none of ours have blade clutches but the riders BUT the Kawasaki that I put on the Snapper was on a Deere mower that had one BUT I was able to take the blade clutch parts and make a blade adapter because the original one (Briggs) was too big for the smaller shaft. Yes, I'd rebuild a blade clutch if I had one on a mower but it'd only be bearings IF I could get them but if I couldn't I'd just make an adapter or get one and do without a clutch. I thought it'd be the conn rod there but glad it's not. Thanks and Blessings!
I love your content! I also do small engine repairs in my garage, and these are interesting to watch. Do you sell the devices you fix or do you collect them?
I'd vote no on the clutch system, unless someone could point out the advantage that outweighs the downside of something else that can go wrong. Thanks for another great vid!
@@HomeGaragechannel when I looked under my honda izy, it looked completely different! I did manage to find the problem, the blade spins freely so it was the recoil mechanism. Manage to fix it without getting it replaced. 😀
What about a totally new engine on a gas log splitter just assembled? Second start after adding more hydraulic fluid - it starts for a second, then suddenly stops and the pull rope feels stuck - can pull only slow and with resistance? Could it be low motor oil level - didn't fill it right? New to gas engines, so most likely I made some error.
sure, take out the spark plug, then pull on the rope and see if gasoline comes out of the engine. There's a good chance the carb allowed fuel to seep by while not in use, and flooded it.
@@HomeGaragechannelAfter letting it to cool down for about an hour, checked the motor oil level - it just flowing out when plug is unscrewed, so I'm assuming that it means enough oil. Tried to pull - no more resistance, the rope is fine again, so I started it without problems, but because I have hydraulic fluid leaking from under the cap which doesn't fit well I shut the motor off. Waiting for a good hydraulic cap to arrive. So, I guess, it was some sort of automatic emergency shut off related to problems with hydraulic (it was foaming like crazy). I hope the new cap will solve the problem.
I hate when the rope gets stuck, it can take you out and really be a nuisance if your not careful with it. Now, my question, do you prefer bagging or mulching, and what do you think the pros and cons are, mine re, baggging you stop more frequently, mulching is harder on the mower, but it really all comes down in the end to grass type and thickness, ur thoughts.
I have a Honda HRR216VXA that has the same issue. My problem is that the center nut is not turning however the starter rope pulls extremely hard and when turning the flywheel there is no loose or tight spot. The valves seem to move in and out as they should. It just stopped out of the blue. The block is not leaking oil so I know a rod did not go thru the block. I can turn the flywheel all day with a large flat tip screwdriver, so I assume the engine is not seized up. Any idea what could be wrong. I'm scarred to take it apart without getting some idea of whats gone wrong. Any thoughts/ideas what happened?
These Mowers with that Blade clutch are used often by older Folks ore comercial users. So you don't have ti start the engine over and over again everytime you emty the basket or remove any obsticals
@@HomeGaragechannel Yeah, I saw a video on one the other day, It seemed pretty cool. Also news on the locked up mower. I got it to crank a tad bit easier. it cranks. but still is a pain.
I have a newer honda. What causes idle surge? How or what do I need to do. Thats sad they dont change oil on it. I love my honda best mower Ive ever owned. Wished they made lawn tractors. By the way, I subacribed. Thnx!
The kids cut wet grass and jammed up the blade and they ripped at the pull start. The speed being moved was because they didn't clean under the deck and the blade was tight.
For my grand parents old craftsmen I could not pull the string so I striped It down to the crankbolt and grabbed a breaker bar and broke it loose then I cleaned the carb jet and it runs better than a 2 year old lawnboy 🥱
Don’t ever tip it to the left, only on the oil side as if it’s tipped to the left oil leaks through the whole engine and ruins it even after 10 seconds, Remember that people
@@HomeGaragechannel Yeah, except the only one who can laugh about it at the end of the day is Home Garage. And that's perfectly ok. It's still better than crying or raging.
