Stud Walls for the Irish Cottage Renovation 

I love the way your collie sees it as his job to guard every animal, love the way your chickens take themselves off to bed, the way the dogs, cats, chickens and donkeys all get along and the fact that the donkeys love to watch what's going on

I really love your videos in addition to all the progress on the house. Your editing, camera placement and music just make it so enjoyable to watch. And you are only getting better at it! I especially love how you bookend each video with scenes of the farm and your animals with gentle music playing. Might you consider making a compilation video of all your farm and landscape scenes from past videos? I can imagine it would be very popular! Something to do in your free time, right? Cheers!

Fingers crossed that you're able to complete a majority of the "expensive" work prior to Ireland's deadline and you'll maximize reimbursement of building costs. It is amazing how by adding the studs you can really see what the finished product will look like. What a fantastic job, you should be proud of yourselves. I can’t wait to see more. Keep up the wonderful work. Be careful you don’t injure yourself Sam, accept help when really needed or you may end up not being able to work for a long period pace yourself! Hi - it's the "windows guy" again. If you put a slim window above each internal door frame you'll get full use of the natural light from the windows... even into the darker parts of the rooms... (I've done that in 2 of the houses that I've renovated - works sooooooo wel😊)

The reality of your home is emerging well with the studs going up - fantastic step. The aurora just set the seal on a great few days work. Well done again Sam - but listen to Becs when she offers her help. Back breaking and strenuous lifting is a shared piece of work - so look after yourself and be safe.

Handy that you're a joiner Sam , a good tradesman like yourself should have no problem finding jobs for others once you've finished your house , I'm sure that Emily and Louise would value your help with their joinery 😉 Fantastic work and lovely to see the donkeys being together too

If I may give some advice on building the outer walls. Granite stones accumulate the outside temperature and that temperature meets a higher temperature on the inside of the granite stones and that is where condensation will settle. If that moisture can be absorbed by the wooden frame with insulation, the wood will rot and mold will form. All touches of wood, concrete and granite must be protected with a moisture barrier and possibly impregnated. The insulation must not touch/contact the granite stones, then the insulation will act like a wick in an oil lamp. I assume that there is insulation between the wooden stouts and that there will be a vapor barrier on the wooden stouts. Between wooden stout/insulation, my advice is that there should be a few cm of cavity and that the cavity is ventilated with small valves at the bottom and at the top. The cavity can be secured by pulling stainless wire horizontally on wooden stouts so that the insulation is held in place. I have an acquaintance who had a country property with external walls of large field stones. They renovated the residence, with new kitchen, bathroom and utility room and all external walls were covered with wooden stout, insulation, vapor barrier and plasterboard. She, the mother of my two children, sold the country property and shortly after the sale the buyer complained that moisture in the wooden stouts had caused rot in the construction. 10 years after the renovation of the residence, there were fungi and rot in the construction due to a lack of ventilation in the fieldstone outer wall. Fortunately, the buyer had the damage covered by the building insurance. I am a bricklayer and structural engineer.

My youngest son is like you Sam he’s a qualified cabinet maker then transitioned into carpentry he can now build anything in Aussie they are called chippies (tradies) and he’s built plenty of stuff for us as well , your build is coming along leaps and bounds well done

The stud work is looking good. It's a shame you have to cover all the stone walls after pointing them, but freezing over winter is even less appealing. I'm all for the basic comforts and heat rates right near the top! (Right after indoor plumbing!) I envy you the Northern Lights. We're too far south for those. What a bummer! Have a good week!
