The WH1125A weld head is configured with a ¼ " copper electrode with an 1/8" diameter mounting shank. The collet slides over the electrode and is used as pictured. The lower electrode is a copper grounding plane for easy support of the steel plate. The weld head is set to apply 15lbs spring force for stronger welds.
We initially used the studs as provided (with the projections) but we found that stronger results could be achieved when the projections were ground off. This could be due to the length of the projection being slightly too long. Welds are performed by the CD1000DP on both sizes of studs with Pulse 1 set at 100ws, Pulse 2 set at 400ws, and the Total Energy set at 500ws. The resulting welds are strong and show failure after bending the threaded part; but further experimentation with energy, force, and electrode configurations could yield even better results as you work with this product.
The CD1000DP and WH1125A are an ideal combination for welding these samples. The power supply has sufficient energy to attach the studs firmly to the steel plate with or without projections on the studs. We also offer a power supply with less total energy (the CD600DP) that would deliver similar results but we chose to use the CD1000DP due to the longer discharge times and higher peak current.
