Yeah. I was told by someone who deals with Malaysian refugees that it is very common to have people claim refugee status because they are gay.

Rosina Kamis I hope the refugees from Malaysia out there can complete their education safely and comfortably without having to deal with strenuous and somewhat backward Malaysian laws.

Hazim Ismail, welcome to your new home! I came to Canada in May 2001 for similar reasons as you - Malay decent and not Muslim professing to have no religion. I understand the part where you cannot visit your family anymore. First, if you get this message, you can consider me one member of your family. I do not have family either. Second, I understand the feeling of not being able to see your loves ones in Malaysia. My biological family in Malaysia are abusive towards me and as such, I do not miss them. However, I was very close to my Taekwondo master and regarded him as my father. I always miss my Taekwondo master and team mates.

I had to run away from the USA to Canada because the Malaysian diplomats from the Malaysian embassy in Washington were out to get me in the USA because of religion. Sadly, I am Canadian Citizen born abroad. I was NOT welcomed in Canada like refugees are. What I got compared to what refugees get, is really bad but at least I survived. I have been treated horribly. My MP scolded me for thinking that I should be treated like the refugees. I cry almost everyday even today. I heard Canada is easy to get in as a refugee compared to the USA. I will help you if you want to seek refugee status in Canada.
