Teachers are calling it quits amid rising school violence, burnout and stagnating salaries, some leaving the profession out of fear for their own safety. Ayana Haris, a former charter school teacher, joins "NewsNation Prime to discuss why she quit, saying, “For me, it was truly due to the overall traumatic experience in the school and the lack of growth or change to make it safer.”

The root of the problem is that parents are not held responsible for the actions of their offspring.

It is so scary that students are allowed to treat teachers in that manner without consequences. It is obviously unsafe for school staff but also gives the child the belief that they can treat everyone this way. Unfortunately, this could lead to the child getting abused or beat up, etc. Sounds like our school systems have become weak in regard to discipline. Anti bullying shouldn't just be student on student no tolerance. It should be no bullying towards our fellow human beings. This world is really going to crap.

@movieknight68 Oh, how terrible. Their parents gave them trophies for not winning. Why are you blaming the children for that exactly? Didn't you spend 35 trillion dollars you didn't have, and expect them to pay back? What are the consequences for those actions? Oh wait, it's kids who hate the system you built. Who would have guessed. Oh wait, everyone with more than 2 brain cells.

That is upsetting that these parents are becoming afraid of their own children. Then expect some other parents to raise or teach them. What should have been taught at home, before they entered grade school. To respect your elders, Teachers and Staff in School or in public. I love the generation I grew up in, because our Teachers had plenty of RESPECT!! All across the board. I would have never thought some day would turn out like this. Sad times for the teachers, students and the parents. I can imagine some Teachers probably not trying to acknowledge their Students when they see them in public😂😂

The problem is the parents. Where do you think the children learned not to care about anything besides their phones and their own opinions? 😂 They get to learn in a few years that their parents and grandparents spent $35 trillion they want them to pay back. While also handing us a collapsing country. 😂

@@franklin9400 everything starts at home. These days the parents don’t stay home anymore like they use to. They either dropping them at daycares, after school something or try to be friends instead of parenting. They child act out and they turn heads and make excuses. The families now are not the kind I grew up with. And all that money will never be paid back. Our Country is no longer the Country we wished for.

Some parents should never have children. If the parenting is done right, the students would behave appropriately in schools. It is the parents who give birth and performs zero responsibility in raising the children. Divore is another horrible thing that has horrible effect on children. Parents who cannot stay together should never become parents. Teachers are there to teach and not be parents.

I am a certified elementary teacher who is also a black male. I left America about 30 years ago and have been teaching in the Far East all that time. I encourage other teachers to follow my footsteps because teaching overseas is a totally different and rewarding experience. While teaching in Taiwan I had 3 apartments. One apartment in the main city and two apartments were GIVEN to me (rent free) by the public schools I worked for. Fully furnished, two bedrooms. The school also sent to my house a personal driver to take me to the school and bring me home. While working in Mongolia the school paid my air fare to get to Mongolia. Upon arrival they slap into the new teachers' hands $700 of cold cash to get settled in the country. They also gave us free housing. In Japan the schools had an annual staff field trip. Some schools flew their teachers to Hawaii (fully paid by the schools) to stay for a few weeks. It was a great life. Consider teaching in another country. New addition: This is how I ended up in Taiwan in the first place. The Japanese school I worked for took a staff field trip to Taiwan and I loved it. I loved it so much that I decided to teach in Taiwan. Oh, and lets address the elephant in the room, that party you guys have in America called gun violence in the schools, they don't have that tradition in the Far East. Civilians are not allowed to purchase firearms.

School policies that conform to CRT ideologies, particularly "restorative practices," put the needs of defiant, disruptive, and often violent students over the safety and well-being of good and respectful students, hard working teachers, and learning progression. This policy undermines classroom management, safety, and leaning. It sets a precedent that willful defiance, disrespect, and disruption are acceptable behaviors that won't have consequences. Who didn't see the end result being student apathy, teacher burn-out, and the collapse of learning.

Lunchtime detention (students don't attend), after school detention (students don't attend or parents don't give permission for them to stay back), suspension (internal - they won't turn up, external - they want to stay home), expulsion (can only be done after 25 suspensions and many interventions and adjustments put in place as to the student's issues) THEN you must exchange one expelled student for another. The strap and corporal punishment was outlawed decades ago as it is child abuse.

It is hard. I've worked with a pre-kindergarten student who just punched our assistant teacher in the face, near her eye. She had to step out because she could not believe what just happened. She started to cry. It's a tough job, and some of these parents are not disciplining their child because of their tempered actions.

I'm 35. I was taken out of school due to a learning disabilities from 4-7 grades. These kids are just like I was re-entering the school system. Yes, trauma does exist and is certainly impacting them. But can you imagine being granted all the flexibility of remote learning and it being taken away and you are forced to go back into a system that is basically like a corporate office?! And have the emotional maturity/ hormonal rage of kids?!?! I'm sorry but I think these kids are 100% right to be flipping out when we are forcing them to pretend the same flexibilities aren't available anymore with a better level of technology than before the pandemic. It's not on the teachers to deal w/ this- this is clearly no support from the out of touch, can't be bothered administrative staff.

I have been teaching for almost thirty years. My kids are great. My admin is fine. My parents are kind. I will keep teaching until I can't get up anymore. I think many teachers put too much of their life into it. Its a job. Do your best, but don't kill yourself. You can't save the world. As for violence. I have broken up a few fights in my day. Teachers are 100% allowed to defend themselves if necessary. On the other hand, if it is a serious fight teachers are not required to step in.

I don't know what exactly it was, but this interviewer left a really bad impression based on this. Her responses were disrespectful, she kept cutting the teacher off... big yikes. Teachers are expected to do so much and they provide such valuable education, they're severely underpaid and underappreciated, and it's obvious that the cons far outweigh the pros. I don't blame teachers for quitting one bit.
