While upgrading the firmware in an Allen Bradley Controllogix or Compactlogix Studio 5000 project to a newer version is easy, downgrading to an older firmware can be more difficult. In this lesson we show you how to edit the LK5 file to downgrade your PLC to an older firmware.

Hey Tim there is an easier way to do this if you haven’t found it yet. Save your .L5K just like you did and open it back up without editing the text and in the bottom corner of the import window it will give you all your revisions available. I would make a video but I don’t have the on camera personality like you do! Keep up the great work!

You have peaked my interest. I thought you were only able to select a newer firmware with that box but that would be an exciting find. Let me check it out.

@@TimWilborne I need to go from v33 to v20 so I can use my old antiquated PanelView Plus 600. Did Trevor's method work?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne Год назад
No. You can only upgrade the firmware using Trevor's method, not downgrade. But if you try, you will get the magic number you need to edit in the LK5 file using the method I show in this video.

See Trevor Mohr's comment below for easier way, but here are what Tim had us do... Steps: 1.Open a newer file version in offline mode, 2. save as an .L5K file. 3. Open file in a notepad or notepad ++ type editor, and 4. then change in the file; IE_VER= 2.2x to a lower x number, i.e 2.24 to 2.23 in Tim's case (from version 33 to 32), then 5. two places that MAJOR is located from 33 to 32 or similar... 6. Save file. 7. Open the L5K file in Studio 5000, and 8. import into A/B software to open and 9. check the newer version of the controller in the open file now before 10. downloading into any PLC. This process will ask you to 11. place correct version of firmware into the PLC, so accept it and 12. Do not fiddle, or move any cabling or disconnect power from PLC or laptop during the process, so that you don't "Brick the PLC". 13. Don't forget to place PLC back into run mode. Now you should be running an "older" version of the same file in the processor with the PLC firmware backtracked... maybe for compatibility of someone else who doesn't have the latest software version, nor really cares to go with the latest version in their plant. Some technicians are limited by their IT administrators and makes their life difficult, so us PLC gurus may have to contain our joy to get their systems to the latest and supposedly greatest version. May not be best for them short term... Eventually they should migrate to newer or get left behind. see twcontrols.com/controllogix-compactlogix-studio-5000-lessons for full details...

Hi Ali, Yes Rockwell support answer ID QA1568 contains that information. It does require a tech connect contract to view.

Can an Allen Bradly PLC revert back to a previous fitmware after a power failure etc. or is it impossible without human intervention?
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne 27 дней назад
It can if they are using the SD card to store the program. Here is a video I just uploaded about it. It isn't released yet so don't share it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-H8LmfitxpIU.html

Thanks for free education. I have tow questions: 1. Is it possible to install all available firmware versions? Because it is possible that every machine that is referred may be a different version and the program connot be uploaded. 2. If PLC firmware is upgraded or downgraded, will the program in it be lost? How about data? Thank in advance
@TimWilborne
@TimWilborne Год назад
Newer versions can be installed concurrently but older ones could not. Besides that, it is all about hard disk space. Always have your data backed up before doing an upgrade. There are lots of opportunities for failures.

On another note, would this also work for RSLogix 500 ? I came across a problem the other day with a program for a lift station. I could not open the program because of an error I got when trying to go online with the PLC. It said something to the extent of a version issue. All 3 of our licenses for RSLogix 500 is 9.00.00. I'm guessing this one particular lift station program used a slightly higher software version. I really do not know. I just can't seem to open the program.
@TimWilborne

Are you using the free software? It only works with the Micrologix 1000 and 1100.

You will need to install version 24 which can be installed along with version 30. Also, if you only need to view it, you can open it with version 30 and it will give you the option to change the version.

Right click the module in the I/O configuration, select properties, and go to the connection tab. What error does it show? My wild guess is electronic keying mismatch.
