Watching a anime studios history never gets old. even if you already know the gist of it. Frieren was so gorgeous, I think it jumped in my top 15 favorite anime.
Especially when you find out stuff you never knew about. Frieren was insane to watch. When I saw Madhouses name in the Opening a huge smile came over my face because it’s always cool seeing their name attached to projects. And it got blessed with a really good opening from YOASOBI as well. Frieren was really good
Record of Lodoss War was the first anime I ever saw, my parents bought it and I loved it so much. It is honestly one of a kind and I'm sad that we will probably never see a fantasy anime of that style ever again.
It’s a classic. It was one my older cousin was into back in the day as well. It’s one of those things where it was an older style of high fantasy seeing as it’s very D&D based but where Fantasy is right now and the many ways it’s taken shape it’s something that got lost in the shuffle
Thanks for the comment! I really appreciate it. Madhouse just doesn’t take on as many projects as other studios so when they end up making something people go “Yo Madhouse is back” lol. I was blown away with the work they did for Frieren. Watching it week to week was a spectacle
@@leonbrando9892 they can't make money from unlike Mappa (although barely any studio can) Mappa has become so big, they can be in production committees of their shows or pretty much produce a Show on their own. Working so much on their in-house staff too while having a shit ton of Animation producers. All that while they are a private studio, not owned by a big company. Other private companies are struggling with this and are taking the Slow approch which is not sustainable. They are one of the few private anime studios that will not go bankrupt in the following years
@@rickythomas9698 That sounds like RU-vid alright. The first couple of days the views didn’t seem all that much and it took the week for it to get pushed out. I even saw that a bunch of subs didn’t get the notification either. Just a weird system altogether
Made me pretty emotional actually reading through his blog seeing as he was taken from us far too soon. But to be able to make such an impact in such a short amount of time has to be praised. What a legend
Man MadHouse was THE studio in the 2000's. Not just because they made quality stuff, but because they made a dedicated effort to appeal to the western market.
That’s definitely what made them stand out. It was something that felt like EVERYONE could enjoy. From all the collaborations to the types of animes they were making. It was nuts to see how much reach they wanted to go for. Especially for shows like Beck that are those hidden gem shows but still has that Western appeal. Just an outstanding catalogue of work from them honestly
These bastards have been with me literally my whole life since i could pick up a pencil and draw. they were so inspirational yo me up until the late 2000s but forever have a special place in my heart.
They’ve been around for so many peoples lives and generations of people. Madhouse is very special to me too especially for all the work Satoshi Kon did with them as well. It’s insane
I feel like it’s possible seeing as the space that anime is in right now. Everything is getting continuations. Series that you didn’t expect to be continued got more seasons so it’s possible in the future. It’d be nice to see Claymore completed honestly. Just a matter of when
ive watched a shocking amount of these, starting from the earlist ones such as Record of lodoss war, tokyo babylon, X, all the way to the new stuff. Ive watched like 80-90% of the shows/movies mentioned
That’s entirely fair. CLAMP definitely has a style that can be hit or miss for people, even their art style throws people off too. Do you have a favorite anime from Madhouse?
I’m glad I was able to make you relive your memories with Madhouse! They made a ton of great works over the years so it was nice going through the majority of them and the people behind it that worked on them
Although I've been watching anime for well over 20 years now, it wasn't until recently that I started paying more attention to the names behind the works I've so thoroughly enjoyed. Your work on this deep dive is greately appreciated. It helped me link some old time favourites like Death Note, Black Lagoon and Claymore with newer ones like Sonny Boy and Frieren. And also it reminded me that there are some gems out there that I have still not watched and I'm not looking forward to them.
I think it also helps you appreciate what you love even more when you know who’s working on it. Hearing them in interviews seeing how they all tackle storytelling, their personal stories and how it correlates to the work. I’ve always loved behind the scenes on projects because it’s so fascinating to see how everything is brought together to make the final product. A lot goes into anime that people don’t realize or even take for granted so I like being able to shed a light on these things. I’m happy you enjoyed the video. I plan to do more of these!
There’s definitely more coming soon. I enjoy working on these a lot and I’m glad we can all learn interesting facts about these studios and all the talented people that make up the studio
They really do. It’s wild how for every decade they’ve had a list of just great shows. When I was making the video multiple times I had to go “Man they really did that huh?” Lol
Thanks it means a lot. There was so much info on this studio it was crazy lol. I’m glad you all are enjoying it because it was fun doing research for it
Ace of diamond has three seasons, and the fourth is officially announced. the first two seasons are with collaboration with Production I.G. while the third is produced solely by Madhouse, and I think the fourth will also be
Sunrise would be really nice. They have a bunch of classics under their belt. I think it’d make for an interesting video in the future. Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@leonbrando9892 yeah, Sunrise still pretty much relevant even if they focusing more on Gundam and Love Live! content since that IP is their passion and money making project
Yeah that was extremely unfortunate especially with the upcoming arc that’s going to happen in Season 3. Would’ve been insane to see what the team would’ve done with that
There's so much mad house stuff that I love, seeing as I started watching anime in the 90s. I watched most of what people would call their golden age shows, but to me it's Frieren, I already read the Manga, so loved the story already but the anime just took it to another level. I believe its justified being at the top of MAL, it's already in my top 5 anime of all time and if season 2 gets animated it'll go down as one of, if not the greatest anime of all time
I’m genuinely surprised it’s still up there in the #1 spot. I know anything that gets up there gets downvoted by the FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood legion lol. It was a fantastic show so I’m glad it got the recognition it deserved. Madhouse is insane with how many fantastic shows/movies they managed to produce in the past 4 decades. Even when I was making the video the whole time I was like “Man they made this and this and this and this? That’s crazy” even though I knew the majority of their works it’s still wild to reflect back and see how much they’ve done
I watched almost everything on they did after the 90s I have to check it out some of the older stuff. One person that got a name after a show in this studio is the director of No game No life after that she did A Place Further Than The Universe that is a great show and Goodbye, Don Glees! movie that was ok but the visuals were amazing.
There’s a lot to watch lol. Especially their earlier works from the 70s and 80s but most people followed Madhouse from the 90s and onwards. I didn’t hear that many people talk about Goodbye Don Glees. Personally I didn’t know anyone that went out to go see it but it was a very pretty movie
@@Mclucasrv Sometimes people shine in other areas and some shine in every area. Some people genuinely do need help in realizing the final product to help in the area the director or animator isn’t skilled in
LOVE videos like these. Keep it Up! I'd be interested to see if you'd consider doing an Anime studio deep dive in a "rise and fall" point of view of "Studio Gonzo" home of some 00s classics such as Basilisk, Hellsing, and Trinity Blood! They definitely had a niche very similar to what madhouse is known for today (dark, gritty, seinen) but the company has changed so drastically since then! I think WIT studio would be a fascinating case as well, from helming juggernauts like AOT and Vinland Saga to primarily working on original movies/series is quite a turn of events.
Gonzo is on my list. I’ve seen a ton of their work and I really liked their art style for the shows they produced. WIT is definitely being done in the future too especially seeing as they haven’t been around that long but have made such a great impact in the space. There’s so many studios to talk about that it’s really exciting and also daunting at the same lol. I’m very happy you liked the video though it means a lot!
Very much appreciated. I’ll definitely come back to Madhouse in the future or any of the studios that I do in the future again because there’s always something to talk about
@@justincholos.balisang6884 I see what you mean? How come you weren’t a fan of their 2010s works? I know I have my favorites from every era but I’m curious why that decade didn’t gel well with you personally
@@leonbrando9892 imo, most of their works in the 90s-2000s were directed carefully and beautifully, flaws and all. The feeling of profoundness resonates when watching shows like Monster, Gungrave, and Texhnolyze. And of course, the action packed scenes of Black Lagoon, Hajime no Ippo, as well as the looming mystery in Death Note and Paranoia Agent. And why would I even forget the works of the late Satoshi Kon and Kawajiri? I'd also like to mention Legend of the Galactic Heroes as an honorable mention. Imo, their work set the standard for anime production in Madhouse, for me at least. Yes I'm being biased but that's how I really it. That's what I rarely/barely see in their works from the 2010s and beyond. It's either a hit or a miss in terms of animation and direction. I don't want to say generic, but that's how I felt seeing their works during that decade. The "Wait, I've watched another show with a similar premise the other day" feeling. There are very notable works of course but if I'm going to compare them with previous works, the 90s-2000s is still my pick. In conclusion, I'm probably just used to watching anime that they did before the 2010s since I went on a streak of binging old animes for the past 3 years, and the works from 2010s were different from what I'm used to watching. Though I'm kinda seeing their actual comeback with Frieren.
@@justincholos.balisang6884 I liked going through this comment because even though you acknowledge that it’s your preference of content you like I fully understand why you believe the works felt special to you the way it was being presented to you. That tends to happen to a lot of people more often than not especially with what you’re accustomed to. Even me I adore anime from the 90s and 2000s because it felt special even for the time but I also adore what’s coming out now as well but every era is different for what’s being achieved but I’m glad you stopped by and shared that same appreciation! Frieren was amazing watching it and it felt like a return to form for Madhouse like it felt a cut above the rest for what they do
Yeah right? They made so many projects over the years that it’s honestly overwhelming with how much Madhouse has done. It’s pretty crazy. One Punch Man was fantastic and just a feast for the eyes so I had to touch on the brilliant minds that brought together that project. Thanks for the comment and I’m happy you enjoyed the video! Also I love the Okarun pfp. My boy Okarun is the best lol
Thanks for stopping by and checking out the video. There was a lot to cover seeing as the company started out in 1972 but I’m glad you learned something from it. I appreciate the comment immensely
Personally while I can understand why you decided to pay respect to each MadHouse worker over the years It would have been a better use of time to have talked more about the animes they worked on instead. I don't think myself nor any other watcher is going to remember footnotes of Animator X doing key animations Y and Z. Like you sped past almost every anime not bothering to even give a brief synapsis on any unless it was a huge one that most would already know. That's just me as I always find it hard to remember names so watching a video thats just saying the names of people and what they did feels almost wasteful since I already forgot those names.
Very valid criticism. I know for some I delved more into like the 70s and 80s productions that people didn’t know about, but I wanted to focus on particular people that were integral to Madhouse over the years. Plus the names I went into for the OPM stuff was important so that people knew who were behind the animation seeing as it gets lauded for all the time but some don’t know the team behind it. I use more of these videos to talk about the production side of things as I personally find that more interesting. I appreciate the feedback though, there’s always room to improve and I do want these type of videos to be as comprehensive as possible so I appreciate you telling me this
@@chrollo4836 It’s a shame that some studios fall to the wayside in terms of what the public views but because there’s so many studios out there with such a high catalogue of work attention is put on others. Studio 4c will definitely be added to the list though. There’s so many studios to talk about, every single one has a story to tell lol
I know Shueisha made an OVA for it back in 2012 which is crazy to think that was 12 years ago lol. That would be quite the dream if Madhouse were to pick it up though

Ooooooooooh. I love Studio Shaft lol. They’re on the list as well and I’m definitely going to get around to them because there’s a lot to speak on with them. Monogatari Series is one of my favorites to exist
I feel like i just had a wikipedia list of anime they have produced speed-read at me. Not much of a deep dive, honestly. Glossing over controversies or talents leaving, no mention of much drama a small google will reveal... You put alot of work into this and ican appreciate that, but i also believe that because of that you can do better than this.
It’s more of a celebration of Madhouse rather than delving into the controversial side of things because we get enough of that in the space as it is. I appreciate the critique though and I even said there’s things I didn’t tackle during the video due to the length of it. But I can always come back to it in the future. For example I’ll tackle MAPPA eventually but because of everything surrounding it and all the misinformation and outrage I was going to wait it out after everything comes out so I’m not adding more fuel to the fire. Controversies a lot of the time are alleged but the community treat it as fact due to it being believable. I didn’t want to get into allegation territory as others do. It’s just weird that you say that a lot of work was put into the video but then also say that it wasn’t what it’s supposed to be due to not speaking on drama
@@leonbrando9892 My comment directly refers to the title of "deep dive" when its really more of a quick overview. I was set to strap in and learn new information but what i was in for was quick gloss over their shows. I thought it was important to recognize that you put work into it, and had the video been what i expected, i think you could do it justice based on the evident work you put into the video. Another clarification that might help what i mean This is more closely aligned with iceberg videos i have seen around, which say they are deep explanations, but are mostly cursory glances, despite covering a wide breadth of information. i would never call either this video or those videos as not work. I sat down for an hour and watched it despite my comment, i would certainly watch something longer were you to produce it~
@@dungeondragon3580 I appreciate the clarification because I was trying to see what you meant by it. I know personally I went into making it talking about Tezuka being in the company. What CLAMP was able to do. And then the talents that made up the company worthwhile and i steer away from the drama aspect of it because it gets talked about at length on RU-vid as it is and it’s unfortunate that most of the time the attention is solely on allegations and not the other talent and what they were able to achieve. I see your issue mainly lies with the titling of the video though
