"Work, work, work, work, work, work" - Rihanna
In this 14-hour day studying for law school from home, I have 6 hours of online classes and a whole lot of other work to get through 🙄 This was filmed Wednesday 25.03.20 - one week into full Coronavirus lockdown here in UK 🏠
Credit to bestdressed for the nightmare idea in the intro to this video - resonated with me soooo much that I had to include my own version of the Coronavirus nightmare in this vid 😵
Happy viewing and let me know what you think in the comments 🤗

Hi Liam. I have recieved an offer to study Jurisprudence at Oxford starting in October 2020 (grades permitting). Your study content really connects with me and, if you don't mind, I have two questions. 1. What do you think of using iPad based technologies for making notes? Is it something that you used when preparing for your GDL exam at all? 2. In the video above, you say that you take 10-15 minutes every hour. When studying, I've struggled to do something productive in my breaks. Therefore, what is that you do in these short breaks? Do you walk around your room etc? Thank you
@luekneef6933
@luekneef6933 4 года назад
Myles Kelly Very good question. I have used paper but that works for me. I really want to know this too, given that you in the end have to take a lot of papers with you. Look forward to an answer on this!
@liam.porritt
@liam.porritt 4 года назад
Hey Myles, Just to say that I did see your previous comment on my other video and was going to reply tonight! Been a busy week (as you can see from this vid!) First of all, that is incredible! Massive congratulations to you - that is an incredible achievement. Glad you're finding my content helpful and... 1) Short answer - no. And I can say that for the vast majority of law students, typing is almost always the option used. So, I guess on that basis, there is no reason you couldn't use an iPad to take typed notes, especially as the iPad airs + pros are becoming insanely powerful and ever more like a laptop. That said, for me, I would still strongly advocate typing on a laptop. A couple of reasons: a) At Cambridge I did languages, and I actually made handwritten notes in lectures. I personally really liked being able to annotate on physical handouts we were given (because things were a bit behind the times technology wise) and a lot of what we were taught, I didn't need to be taking down even close to the majority of what the lecturer said - my own highly condensed notes of the most important parts, handwritten, with arrows etc. linking ideas were sufficient, and I felt, preferable to typed lecture notes. However, for law, the same is not true. You will find, I expect, that you want to take down (although not everything the lecturer says), at least at points, a lot of what they say in quite a short space of time and following their exact wording. This means being able to type really is invaluable, as you just can type (and I'm not the fasted typer) quicker than you can handwrite! b) The ability in law where things are quite structured to copy and paste and shift text around in your notes, add things in, reorganise etc. to make amazing revision notes is pretty invaluable. This cannot be very easily done with handwritten notes, even in Notability / One Note. So yeh, for those reasons + the fact it's much easier on a laptop to have multiple documents open alongside one another, laptop still has my vote - and is certainly most common amongst law students! 2) In breaks, I generally try to be UNPRODUCTIVE. The whole idea is that those slightly longer breaks (lots of people would say just take 5 mins) should give your brain a chance to properly unwind - that means talking to someone (family member / friend), watching a TV show in another room, having a snack, having a quick walk somewhere... You get the idea. It's basically just the idea that you are very focused during your, e.g. 1 hour study session, and then allow your brain to be unfocused for 10 to 15 to 20 mins depending on the length of the focused session you've just had. Hope that helps, good luck with everything, and massive congratulations again! 🤗

@@liam.porritt Hi Liam, Thank you very much for this detailed and truly useful response, especially in a time when you are both busy and stressed. Apologies for somewhat hassling you for a reply - unfortunately, from my experience, very few RU-vidrs take their time to conncet properly with their fanbase and leave their comments unlisteneded to. Not you though! I was leaning towards using a laptop instead of an iPad, but felt like I needed to ask for another opinion first. As a video idea for the future (when you have the time), do you think that you could make a video about the software e.g. Word and technology you use when note making/working? Any new apps you use for restricting the time you spent on your phone? Is there a specific reason you use an Apple computers instead of Windows or is just personal preference? Apologies for all these questions but I really want to hit the ground running when I start university and you're experience really is first class. Thank you

@@lawyerportal5226 Hi, I think the first thing to consider is your academic record. GCSEs are considered strongly by Oxford so, in my opinion, I believe you need a majority A*/8 or 9 equivalent to put yourself in a strong position of recieving an interview. Then you must consider your a level predicted grades - do you think you will be given at least 2 A* and an A? While this may not be indicative of what you actually achieved next summer, many schools over-inflate their students grades so you'll need competitive predicted grades (alongside impressive GCSEs) for the tutors to consider your application (I know that this is brutal but unfortunately it is realistic). Secondly, practise, practise, practise for the LNAT exam. At Oxford this is again considered with a lot of weight as an objective test. It's best starting early for this so I would recommend beginning in late July. Resources which I endorse are Arbito (the most challening but useful resource), the Ultimate LNAT Collection and Mark Shepherd Mastering the National Admissions Test. In addition to this, Eve Cornwell has posted a video of the LNAT structure on her YouuTube page. For the essay section, I encourage reading opinion pieces from Guardian and making a word document of topical news that you could potentially include into essays. It would also be worth making a document of essay plans to reassure yourself. Although the MC score isn't considered by some colleges, a score of 26 and upwards is what is expected Thirdly, you need a solid personal statement. This can be achieved by in a manner of ways. For example, entering Law essay competitions (it doesn't matter if you don't win) to show independent engagement and then mentioning the topics that you discussed in yours PS. You could write about a particular area of the law that you think is in need of debate etc. It would also be wise to mention one book and discuss a specific issue raised by its reading. Hope this helps. It's best to start preparing now, rather than later. It all gets a bit hectic in year 13... This link reaffirms what I said www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=86654052
