Ever wondered what it is like to study Architecture?
I recently completed my degree in Architecture at the University of Bath, and put together this film from the bits and pieces I'd been shooting throughout the year. I hope you enjoy it.

First of all love you video. Me as an architect student find college life both hectic and enjoying..but definitely architecture taught me a lot more thn any other career would teach me abt patience, courage and etc. In past 2 yrs I have learned a lot of skills which I believe is survival skills for any architect even if they wanna change the career after degree. Even if this career seems stressful trust me this career makes you view the world in a whole new perspective.

Great video! Hi, I’m an A level student and I’m looking forward to start Architecture at uni next year. When searching for the right uni, which ones did you visit and why did you choose your course? Does it matter if it’s BaHons or BScHons and what degree will lead to what sort of job? Also I am thinking of buying a laptop or a tablet, which one would you recommend is best for the course and is compatible with all the work load and software? Sorry for the bombardment of questions.
@mattcoles9222
@mattcoles9222 4 года назад
I went with Bath and a BSc because it seemed to fit my more practical temperament. Having worked for a while in architecture I have discovered that I do have more practical skills than most people after the part 1 degree. That is partly due to the course and the university I think, but there were other people on my course that took a much more artistic approach and came away with a completely different set of skills. I would say that your own interests will drive what you take from the course more than the course itself. Just pick the one that feels best after you visit/research. Regarding laptops, It really depends on how you like to work, which you might not know yet. Any modern laptop will be able to handle 2D drafting, photoshop and simple sketchup models. Its only complex 3D visualisations and renderings that require more power. Not everyone works like that though, so not everyone needs it. I used a pretty basic laptop for the first couple of years and then built a desktop PC to use at home, then just used my laptop for lighter tasks in studio. I am a 3D and renderings nerd though so that is more at the extreme end of things. I suggest just getting something mid-range and light and then reavaluate in a couple of years if you find its getting too slow for what you're doing. You might prefer making a lot of physical models. Just make sure you get a mouse too, its basically impossible to draft on a trackpad. Oh, and more software is compatible with windows than mac, but I know some people used macs and got by ok.

You’re feedback has been so helpful. Many lecturers have told me that there isn’t much of a difference between Ba and BSc- therefore I began to believe that the best way was to trust my instincts and follow the type of path I would approach tasks (whether artistic or scientific). Thank you and I wish you all the best!

Hey, there is absolutely nothing wrong about the position you're in. In fact, you're in a good place because you're able to judge honestly for yourself what exactly you want in life. Treat this as a special opportunity, and later in life, you'll appreciate that you gave yourself the chance to change. Life is all about change, and expecting that we ought to 'pick' something that is going to work for us forever on and into the later part of our life is ridiculous. Embrace uncertainty and recognise that lots and lots of people move around unsure of what they want to be doing with life. This is the grand journey of life. Keep trying!

I am actually not continuing in the career myself, so I know how you feel, though I did complete the degree. What I realised during my course was that the most successful people were the most passionate. The best stuff was coming from the people who could work 24 hours straight and still be motivated because there wasn't anything else they'd rather be doing. You just have to find the thing that does that for you, though I know that's easier said than done. I didn't realise what I really wanted until I worked myself into the ground doing architecture.

Hypothetically speaking if I get amazing A levels , a good personal statement and relevant work experience. Will my gcses matter.

Hey, I'm from India and I really want to study architecture in the UK. But the problem is I have no portfolios or artworks to showcase. Here, we don't have art for the final years in our school, (even if I could take them, I would have to skip out on maths an physics), so are there any UK universities that don't require portfolio work? I searched but couldn't get a definite list. I'm good at art, and I only have a few pieces to show it (the ones that I could fit in with my hectic school schedule). Any help would be really appreciated. Amazing video btw.
@mattcoles9222
@mattcoles9222 4 года назад
My university, the university of Bath, didn't ask for a portfolio. I did have an art qualification however. I wouldn't advise limiting yourself to only universities that don't require a portfolio, so it may be worth inventing an artistic project of some sort for yourself, if you feel that you need to expand it. They will most likely be impressed you showed initiative if you explain there was no art course available to you.

Not a necessity. I knew people there that didn't do maths at A-level. There will be some basic newtonian physics relating to structure which you'll have to tackle on the course though. It was challenging for those that didn't have maths or physics and a breeze for those that did. Any course should have its requirements stated clearly on the official web page, you should check there.
