When I listen to music, my ear naturally gravitates towards the lead vocals. Sometimes this makes it hard for me to have any kind of 'background music' on when doing work or talking with people because, if there's a good singer in the background, I am drawn in to the point of distraction! (haha)
When I listen to a singer that really moves me, I sometimes notice that my mouth, jaw and neck do reactionary things as I engage with what they are doing. It's like I'm internalizing what they are doing on some level, without even singing. When I go to sing a song they've done though, with their voice ringing in my head, I ALWAYS fall short.
If I have the original singer's voice in my head TOO MUCH when I go to sing their song, failure and discouragement are inevitable,
BUT, if I get a hold of a good backing track, and really jam over the songs with my own voice and all it's melting pot of influences, there can be GREAT FREEDOM and victory.
In this lesson, we get to dive into the style of Rob Halford (Judas Priest) and, over a decade ago, I had the opportunity to record full covers of THREE Priest songs. So not only are we going to dissect the masterful style of Mr. Halford (who's range, control and versatility are remarkable and set the bar really high) I also get to react to my own performances along side his.
The result is this: We get to hear how a much less experienced and less confident me, approached some challenging songs, and in the process, learned a great deal about inspiration vs. imitation. When we are inspired and then become aware of our own limitations and influences in context of that inspiration, and then we GO FOR IT with our own voice... Well... Some really neat 'merging' of styles happens.
I hope you enjoy learning as we dig in to Rob Halford and take a trip down memory lane at the same time! ...Lots to be uncovered by revisiting our roots!
