In this video, I go through the techniques used to sing the song Painkiller by Rob Halford with Judas Priest. This is a tough one, but I show you how it's done!

In his own words, Rob Halford said that he felt that "Painkiller was the best representation of Judas Priest."
Meaning that if you took all of the Judas Priest songs, he felt that this one song was the quintessential example (musically speaking), of what Judas Priest was all about.
In addition, it is probably the most difficult Judas Priest song to sing.
In this video I demonstrate two different approaches to how to sing Painkiller.
The recorded video demonstration is my singing painkiller and what we call "chest voice".
In Rob Halford's version, he uses predominately all "head voice".
I discuss and demonstrate the differences of both versions so you can see the difference and decide how you would like to approach a song like this.

For people who may have never heard Judas Priest singing the origional version they are probably thinking, "Man this guy is good!" I like the version you did. I also understand that instead of trying to copy someone note for note you might as well play Rob Halford's voice, and dissect that. What you did is great, and serves a better purpose to student's that you can do this with some of your own flare, and it still sound great. Trying to copy note for not with any great singer when you are not properly trained will make the person give up on trying to sing that song, and possibly cause vocal chord damage. Again I think your teaching methods, and explanations the best on here. I've been away for a little bit, and am now bingeing on whatever I missed.

Well, I can definitely tell everybody, I mean EVERYBODY, one thing for sure- being a teacher myself...just by watching a couple of your videos, everybody can tell what a great singer you are and how formidable your technique is. BUT...! Not everybody really understands what a great TEACHER you are. In fact, I think that THAT'S the very thing that makes you stand out and distinguishes you from most of the vocal coaches (or "coaches"...) out there. I was in a couple of Priest cover bands. I definitely noticed that I would lose power in my lower register stuff after "dialing in" the Halford sound. I can do some Coverdale, but it's not great going from the low register to the high parts. I can do Gene Simmons pretty well, but I can't sing Love Gun convincingly. So it's definitely all about what you're showing here. I live in an apartment which sucks because I can only really sing in the car. It takes years to work this stuff out. Thanks for the helpful instruction again!

The greatest feature of Painkiller is rob Halfords' crazy distortion. Probably impossible to sing it live I can imagine.

Got to say I really like your chest voice version - I think especially its a better option for a live performance, I've seen that when Rob Halford performs it using head voice live it pales in comparison to what he put down in the studio. I'm wondering whether he would have a better result if he did more of it in chest at live shows.

These other coaches never actually sing any songs. It's relatively easy to eek out a line or two, that is not an example. It's another thing altogether to actually grade the quality of the voice on not only an entire song, but multiple songs in many styles with many students demonstrating themselves. This is the only true way to know if a method is actually working or not.

TBH, I think I like the manly version better. I can hit all the same notes Rob does in my head voice and used to think i was the bomb singer until I tried to sing something clean and soft and had the truth smack me. I had no lower end tones (chest voice). After just watching your videos on RU-vid and working my craft as you say, my voice is so much stronger and im loving the range i get. If this is what I can do just by doing the free stuff, I can't wait to get into KTVA! This spring my wife and I are going to go through it

I wish Halford and Judas Priest recorded their in studio work to show in the raw he doesn't sing in falsetto. You hear what sounds like falsetto but it is simply him reaching his highest octave range in action before the studio enhancements are added. Saints In Hell, Freewheel Burning, Ram It Down and Halford's Resurrection and especially Betrayal from his solo material are all better vocals than Painkiller by the way.
