Stump Pulling

Using the M985 called Megatron to pull stumps. The first 3 came out with the winch but the 4th one wasn't going to go with winch due to it's size so we chained up and pulled it with the truck. This is a 1987 Oshkosh M985 HEMTT w/winch powered by a Detroit Diesel 8V92TA 2 stroke V8 rated at 450 HP/1300 FTlbs torque. This was the first time I could test the winch since it was installed and it worked great. Nice to know that if it over loads it just stops pulling instead of breaking expensive thins.

I was thinking the same thing. They should've had a heavy blanket or even a chain over the cable to act as shock absorber if the cable parted. I've seen winch cables snap, whip back, and cut sheet metal like butter. I don't think a jacket would offer any more protection.

Have to purchase a couple of snatch blocks! The extra leverage is amazing and will save the winch motor! Using a snatch block will double your load capacity and will allow you to spool out more cable to reach the maximum rating of your winch. For even more power, you can rig up a triple line pull. ... As the strength of the pull increases, so does the amount of stress placed on each rigging point.

Not real smart standing so close. That chain breaks or tge cable snaps, someone ain't going home tonight.

If the chain was further up the stump, it would pull better (greater leverage). Impressive piece of machinery!

I love that , a HEMTT licensed as a vintage vehicle ,,,I own an M977-A2 and here in iowa mine is licensed as a 20 ton pickup truck ,,mine carries the name of BEAST ,,but my work with rescues in the 2019 flood earned it the nickname the 8 wheeled motorboat cause of my many days cruising up back roads helping people all over southwest iowa some areas with 4-6 feet of water

im here for the trucks, but you guys should definitely be further away from the chain than that, AND you dont ever need to manually clear dirt from stumps if you can drag them or pick them up and drop them.

A little history on the M985s. They were purchased for the MLRS system of Missile artillery. They are identical to the M977s except they are rated at 11 tons instead of 10 tons. The crane is also rated higher capacity than the M977s at around 6300 lbs. The winch on the side you are using is only used as a "self-recovery" winch and not intended to recover stuck vehicles. Only 1 in 6 issued to the Army were so equipped with the self-recovery winch. Great trucks and very reliable.

@@yaykruser it's a 20K winch so 10 tons ,, i have one on my 977 and it works great for stump removal ,,a good pull on the chain with the truck works better , it's amazing how much pulling power that truck can produce ,,the truck i own has a much bigger engine and an 18 speed transmission instead of the 5 speed automatic the army issue trucks have

If your going to do a lot of this I would invest in a sawsall and a bunch of pruning blades to cut the roots, forget the chainsaw the dirt will ruin chains real quick. Pruning shears are handy to have to.

@@jayquick6520 That has nothing whatsoever to DO with it. One should always use Best Practices based on the immutable tenets of science, rather than keep track of which jobs to do half-assed and which to do correctly.
@jayquick6520
@jayquick6520 2 года назад
@@adamchurvis1 incorrect… Because of leverage. The top is also the weakest part. Has a higher probability of breaking and sending a chain at mach ten into a bystander or your equipment. I made a light hearted joke originally and you not only go all bill nye the science guy on me but are completely incorrect.. The answer is to use equipment and practices that result in safe work environments. Choking up on the stump is not the right answer. The right answer is hiring a company with stump grinders to come in. Not call uncle Bobby down with his army truck and pay him in beer and bbq.
@adamchurvis1

@@jayquick6520 Yes, on deeper thought based on what you've just said, I see that you are clearly right and that I was entirely wrong. I genuinely appreciate your correction, sir.
