I also got a little teary. So many men left their parents in Ireland and emigrated throughout the world and their parents prayed every day that their son would someday return to Ireland even if it was to see where they lay in death. Such a moving story in that song.
The first song I had heard by her was over the rainbow it was so beautiful My aunty used to sing it to me as a kid and one day I asked who sang it so she played me the record of all her songs
There's not a dry eye among your fans of Celtic heritage, at this moment. This is an all-time classic, sung at weddings, funerals; it's a part of life.
Not this version. Suspect you are just another American plastic paddy with fuck all ancestry who pretends they are Irish and support the IRA. We disown you
Both "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Time After Time" make me cry every time. "Fields of Gold" is also awesome. Everything Eva touched turned to art.
This was written in 1913. There are various conjectures about the meaning of "Danny Boy". Some interpret the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or participating in the Irish uprising (as suggested by the reference to "pipes calling glen to glen") or emigrating as part of the Irish diaspora
@@georgebarnes8163the Londonderry Air is Irish. English words Irish tune so lets go halvo halvo as we would say as kids if one had sweets & the other hadnt. The Pipes calling was a cry to fight & glen to glen would refer to Iteland or Scotland so perhaps we should go thirdo thirdo. It is tegarded the world over as An Irish song but who cares when you can hear the putity of Eva's voice so deep down in the soul. Slainte leat. which doesnt mean cheers but health to you which I say to you from the bottom of my soul
@@mauraorourke9849 LOL, the Irish would never ever use the term Londonderry, they hate that British city and county. The song Danny Boy is 100% English and has nothing to do with Ireland or the Irish. By the way the term you were looking for is "Slan leat" not Slainte leat.
@@georgebarnes8163 well Im Irish & I used it. Thats what the tune is called probably written after the Ulster Plantation. You are correct we call the city Derry.. ive never known it as anything else. Even across the border its called Derry except for a few diehards. No politics here George because if I start I wont stop. I did not say slan leat because that is goodbye which I never use because its forever. We might want to challenge each other again. I still say Irish air for Danny Boy so its halvo halvo. I wished you health which I meant sincerely
This is how I was introduced to Eva Cassidy. The song was used during a funeral scene in the "Smallville" TV show. Absolutely heartbreaking for the scene, made it onto the first Smallville soundtrack, and then I went out and bought a few of her other albums. So amazing!
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. I've heard this song sung by at least 10 different people, and they are all great, but this one was something truly special.
Her take on BLUES EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN is a soaring tribute to Eva Cassidy. She never aimed for stardom. Eva only wanted to play music her way which was at odds with record company moguls. Just her and the guitar. But it wasn't considered commercial enough to sell. Eva didn't want to be packaged and sold. She wanted to be honest. And she was. And she was also gone to soon.
What an indescribably heart-filling rendition of this song. She was a beautifully evocative singer. I came here from watching your Celtic Women 'You Raise Me Up' video after searching to see if you had done Austin Brown's cover of Danny Boy. Some say the tune is the same, but it really isn't. I think perhaps both are based on the same Irish folk tune. You would love Austin's cover of this song.
Before she stepped into a recording studio, she paced for an hour before finally entering the studio. The recording engineer thought she might be homeless. She proceeded to record numerous songs in a brief period, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The engineer was blown away by that song, sent a copy quickly to a DJ in London. He was blown away. In his next set he squeezed in Over the Rainbow, put in on the air...and it was a hit overnight. Her version of the song is the bumper music to Britain’s Got Talent.
Eva didn't "sing" lyrics. She BELIEVED every word in her soul and was able to bless us with her feelings. She and Karen Carpenter are the only artists in my lifetime that were able to do that in my opinion.
'I Know You By Heart' was on her last album. She was battling cancer at the time when she recorded it. The song deals with the death of a loved one... : (
One of those singers that elevate your emotions to new heights. Her passing is a loss to not just her family and loved ones.. but to all of us that appreciate great vocals and talent. RIP Eva.. now singing with the angels.
Eva's version of "Fields of Gold" (written by Sting) is Eva at her best! To me, there's a sense of melancholy that floats around her vocals. I wonder if she knew she had untreatable cancer when she recorded some of these songs?
A few weeks before she passed her friends and fans got together to do a benefit for her to help with Medical bills. She insisted on coming and even sang for them though she had to be helped to the stage and given a stool. The last song she sang was "What a Wonderful World" 6 weeks later she died. RIP a Beautiful gift.
My favorite female singer. Fantastic job on Danny Boy! But Eva has another side where she really brings it. Check out Stormy Monday or Chain of Fools, she sings blues and soul as well as anyone.
I was first introduced to Eva Cassidy with her rendition of Sting's Fields of Gold. One of my favorite songs. Definitely recommend you guys react to both versions.
Real nice song for Saint Patty’s day. Eva Cassidy RIP has so many beautiful covers. “Early Morning Rain”. One gem out of many. You guys are so genuine. Keep it up! She is an angel
This is your IPSA (Irish Public Service Announcement) - it can be St. Patrick's, St. Pat's, or St. Paddy's - but it is never St. Patty's. I'm not picking on you - I share this IPSA every time I see that. 🙃
I love her covers of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors" and Sting's "Fields of Gold". For a fun upbeat tune you can't beat "Hallelujah I Just Love Him So". ❤
@@kellylaflash1016 Nobody ever says “St. Paddy’s Day” or “St. Pat’s”. Never once heard someone use either of those versions. It’s either “St. Patrick’s Day”, “Patrick’s Day“ or “Paddy’s Day”.
You two are so sweet and genuine. Thank you from a 53 year old man that is watching his parents prepare to cross that threshold into the great world of spirits. Much love.
If you love Eva version, then you will also love Jackie Evancho’s version at age 10. Unbelievable voice for a 10 year old. You will be moved to tear’s!
There is a boy named Declan Galbraith that sang this song on a morning show. He was around 8 years old. He is in his twenties now. He did a great version of this song.
Hey, I just stumbled upon your channel here, thanks for doing an Eva reaction. Let your tears flow, her voice is capable of doing that to you and bringing such emotional responses. This song gets me too and I'm a hard rock/blues kind of guy. And I love Eva and everything she did. I grew up in the same area as she did but unfortunately I discovered her too late, just before she passed away. You have to check out some of her tunes from Blues Alley CD, check out her version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters....that will make your skin tingle and bring a tear to your eye, it's so damn beautiful
That song, alone, is like a 4 or maybe 5 on the sad scale but with her singing it.... Man, it goes off the charts. But it isn't just sad. It's full of emotions because she and her voice and her guitar and her emotive way of bringing the song to you, just goes off the charts. I, also cry, at most every song I hear of hers. What a gift that was lost but it's understandable why the heavens needed and wanted her beautiful self there. Man....
I know this is an old reaction, but it's worth warning you about Irish and Celtic music, because a lot of it is heartbreaking. As poet and novelist G. K. Chesterton said, "The Great Gaels of Ireland are the men that God made mad, for all their wars are merry and all their songs are sad."
Love Eva and miss her talent. Her recordings are a comfort in our troubled times. Heard a twang sound -is this from the Blues Alley recording where a string broke? RIP Eva!
The greatest singer of all time was never even a full-time musician. It was a hobby for Eva, something that she just loved doing. And she was better at it than anyone else who ever lived.
Oh my namesake. I remember my grandma Betty singing this to me in the late 70s. In fact I have a tapestry she made and on the back it says "to my Danny boy xmas 1982" . I was 7. Happy weekend guys
Might I also suggest Alison Krauss as another female vocalist whose voice sounds like it comes straight from heaven! Check out her and a church choir singing Down To The River To Pray. The a cappella version she did with Union Station harmonizing is outstanding as well!
You must check out the story behind this artist. I came upon her music by accident when my sister in law died and left us her music collection. She was a local. Girl in the DC metro area, and was discovered by another DC native who was very popular. I'll let you discover who that was on your own. The first song of hers I heard was somewhere over the rainbow, and I cried when I learned she was and still is an angel. Unfortunately, she left this world too young and just before the whole world was getting ready to discover her talent.
Gorgeous voice, but I've heard other arrangements and singers that grab you and pull your heart strings a lot more. Frank Patterson's version is sad and so, so beautiful.
Ronan Tynan does a beautiful version of this song ,it’s on RU-vid played at the end of one of the 9/11 documentaries,he sings the definitive version that includes the intro verse of Danny’s passing which isn’t covered by a lot of artists
At age 10 now 20 America's Got Talent, Platinum recording artist, Jackie Evancho, brings on the waterworks with Danny Boy, It's a Wonderful World and U-2's With Or Without You. Will make a great Female Friday artist to follow.
Actually a song of a son going off to war, sung by his father in the original. Sings of his love for his son, and when Danny returns dad may be dead. But Danny will kneel at his father’s grave, and profess his love of his father, and his father will Rest In Peace. Played by bagpipes at many NYC firefighters and police officers funerals who died trying to rescue people during attacks on the Twin Towers on 9/11
On the 1991 CNN Video, "War In The Gulf", General Norman Schwarzkopf visited some troops in the field in Saudi Arabia. While he was there, one of the soldiers sang "Danny Boy", to help build morale, brotherhood, and comradeship. A lot of soldiers were moved emotionally by that song on that day.
Just saw your reaction & so happy you chose Eva's version of Danny Boy. Her friends have said she did not believe her voice was good enough to be a solo singer & hoped one day she could sing backup for Stevie Wonder. This is one of my favorites. Also, Imagine, Tennessee Waltz & How Can I Keep From Singing, she'll take you to church. First line " my life goes on in endless song" so very true.
If I remember, the song was about a Irish soldier whose going off to fight a war .but the soldier got killed and he's talking about him coming to the grave.telling him how much he loves him.
listen to any song from her live at blues ally album , has to be one of the best albums ever made! preferable STORMY MONDAY, onw of the best live performances ive ever heard, the power! the jazz band she plays are unreal
Check out a version of this song by a young boy, Declan Galbraith. He was very young when he sang this. He is in his twenties now. He also has a song called "tell me why". That is a gem.
I just listened to your reaction to Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World." I enjoyed it. Louis was the consummate "Good Will Ambassador." You might be interested in knowing Eva did a cover of the song. (By the way, all of Eva's recordings are covers.) If I'm not mistaken, she sang the song at a benefit affair (for her) just before she died of cancer at the age of 33 in 1996. She was pretty much unknown but she performed at small clubs (such as Blues Alley) in and around Washington, DC. There's quite a story (you can find it on RU-vid) about how she was "discovered." She was a sweet introverted soul, or you might say angle, who left us far too soon.
No Apologies for tears! Some People are WORTH Crying About! My Sister-In-Law's Father had this played at his funeral! In spite of that. Sadly, She's now gone too. But- You Made Me Smile!! :)
For my late younger brother Dan Dec. 20, 1958 -July 25, 2020. I am the only one left of my original family. And we are of Irish heritage. This song is too tough for me to sing anymore, let alone listen to. So is Daniel by Elton John
Please do Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy. It is the first song I ever heard her sing, and I've been smitten every since. And I cry at every single song she sings.
Next Irish day event.... watch The Corrs. Toss the Feather. Haste to the Wedding. There's a video out there where Mick Fleetwood, from Fleetwood Mac plays drums with them. I think it at the Royal Albert Hall. Absolutely killer.
Watch the documentary. The Record Labels wouldn't hire her because she insisted on singing what she wanted to sing and it was all over the place. They wanted to package her. To see the producers cry in deep honest regret for being so stupid and blind; that choked me. I believed their sorrow.. Eva was the real deal, A Bright Shiney One of a Kind Brilliant Diamond and they let the Green Blind them.
Next Stops, Songs that Move Me to Tears Editions: Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah" Joan Osborne, "Please Don't Tell Me How the Story Ends" George Jones, "A Picture of Me Without You"
Danny Boy is one of those songs that most people only know the first verse. So it comes as a shock the first time you hear the entire lyric and realize how sad the song is. Another song like that is You Are My Sunshine. Sweet first verse, but then it takes a turn.
