Stupid Watergate II: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO) 

I never watch Fox News so I had no idea how batshit crazy it is. No wonder Fox News viewers are so detached from reality. I read an article about a guy whose father had always been a kind and empathetic man who never had a bad thing to say about immigrants, Muslims, people of color, etc. When this guys dad retired he got into the habit of watching tv most of the day. At first he would watch a variety of shows, but gradually he started watching Fox News more and more until it was the only thing that he was watching. Then he started listening to Rush Limbaugh and Alex Jones whenever he was in the car. This guy said that within a year of retiring his dad had been completely brainwashed by Fox News and similar media. He said that now his dad bitches about illegals taking jobs and collecting welfare, Muslims and Jews taking over the country, and referring to black people using the n word and saying that they have no respect for authority and ought to know their place. This man says that he doesn't even recognize his dad anymore. That's the danger of this kind of over the top media, regardless of its slant. They might throw in just enough real news to make themselves look legitimate, but the rest of it is fear mongering, hate mongering, and brainwashing.

Fox News should be officially rated as STATE MEDIA, not independent.

My only problem here is that the "Sock Slider" deserves more credit as a device for helping disabled people. For someone with limited leg mobility it could be a great "I can do this on my own" device. There's just not enough love for devices whose commercials seem funny, but are actually meant for people who are not in the advertisement.

What about as Americans we stop treating politics as a team sport and go after any politician that breaks the law?

As a psychology student, I know exactly why these tactics are working, and it makes me completely ready to give up on humanity and just blow my brains out. Because what is the point of science or truth if the world is run on how people feel and not on facts?

The "what about" argument is proof that we need more parents, who have an actual relation to their children. Anyone who has tried it at home "but, what about Steve? He did ..." I'm sure everyone got the same answer: "we are not talking about Steve, we're talking about you, what do you have to say for yourself?"

Hannity is like that Flat Earther who asks for proof of the curve, and then says "I don't believe this" when you give it to them and walks away.

Sure you can feel sorry for the guy at WSJ who had to read the FBI sexts, but I personally feel more sorry for the guys at this show who have to watch Fox News to gather enough contents for the episodes

I do not know what depresses me more, the fact that John is so right about this, or the fact that his show isn't even known about by the Fox News viewers he uses to illustrate his point.

I'd show this to my parents who only watch Fox News, but they wouldn't finish it. Like most Americans, we only surround ourselves with media that validate our own beliefs, not challenge them. It's dangerous and keeps our country from making any reasonable bipartisan decisions.

That is one thing I've never understood. The whole argument "What have they found? Nothing!"... Just because an investigation hasn't shared anything with the general public on a specific topic, doesn't mean they haven't found anything. It just means they are waiting with what they have found to put it all together to make sure they have all the information needed to move forward. Don't people know how investigations work? They never share their information until they are ready to press charges.

I just can't anymore. What is there to do if people say "You don't have evidence and I won't believe any evidence you show me."Even Trump coming out and admitting all of it wouldn't persuade them.

This is so important, forget whether or not Trump is guilty. The president very well may be able to soon shut down an investigation into his own administration. And the way the public sentiment is trending, few would care. That is chilling. If you believe he did nothing wrong, you should support the investigation.

I don't understand why Trump's own supporters aren't bothered by the way he talks down to them. That would genuinely bother me. I'm an intelligent informed adult.....so I expect to be spoken to as such. Remember when Trump said he could shoot someone in public and he wouldn't lose a single supporter? Remember that? If I was a Trump supporter and heard him say that....I'd be pissed off. He's literally saying he thinks his _own supporters_ are such sycophants they will tolerate ANY unethical behavior, including murder. He quite literally talked DOWN to his own supporters and demeaned their ethical values and intellect. How did that not bother them? If I was a Trump supporter and heard him say that, my response would be simple: Mr. Trump...I am not a sycophant. I don't worship you. You aren't immune to reality. If you want my vote....earn it. Speak to me like I'm intelligent and ethical. Don't assume I'll follow you no matter what. Prove your worth to me. Don't mock my support of you by claiming I'm more loyal to YOU than to facts, evidence, truth, reality, and ethical maturity. Please grow up and speak to me like an adult. You're 71....and I'm 35. So please don't speak like you're an 8 year old speaking to another 8 year old. We're both too old for that.....right?? But I didn't hear ANY response even remotely like that. Just crickets. I just don't understand why Trump supporters don't hold him to a higher standard. I know a few Trump supporters who are genuinely intelligent ethical people....my own parents. And if Hillary spoke, behaved, and acted 100% like Trump has in the past and does now.....they would be livid. They would call her out for all of it....and rightly so. So why not apply the exact same standard to Trump? I don't get it. But see....I'm loyal to *_nothing_* but objective truth. I don't care about teams or groups or parties or ideologies or cults of personality. I'm beholden to none of that crap. I'm not on anyone's team. I simply want to hold as many true beliefs as possible....and as few false beliefs as possible. Both those elements are equally important. And so I use empirically valid *_methodologies_* to parse reality in order to lead to that outcome. If I bought into ANY team or ideology or party or personality cult....I'd be missing the point....I'd be giving up on reality in favor of fantasy. And why would I do that? Why would _anyone_ ever do that...for _any_ reason? History has shown over and over and over that tactic always leads to horrible outcomes. I'm not some sort of super genius. I'm simply smart enough to not buy into group-think pressure to join some team. I'm on team reality...team truth...team objective empirical ethics. It's the only team that is based on, well.....reality. And it's not even a team....it's just the result of being, you know...smart. But _plenty_ of other smart people seem to have given up on holding themselves to that sort of standard....instead opting for the imagined safety and security of being part of some team. I only have one life....why would I waste it by giving up on the only thing that matters in order to be a part of some self-congratulatory myopic bubble? I'm not a liberal or a conservative. I'll absolutely agree with liberal ideas or conservative ideas....IF they pass the muster of empirical reality. That's all that should matter. But I live in a world where it seems that a good 90% of my fellow humans could care less about objective reality....and would rather live in a fantasy world of their own creation in which reality agrees with their own beliefs 100% of the time. But how is that anything other than pure delusion? Why waste any of your short life giving in to delusion? We're all susceptible....as am I. But, I'm at least aware when I'm doing it...and I work hard to become more and more immune to that vice. But I don't see society as a whole doing that....not even close. It's an absurd time to be alive....

I really appreciate John Oliver doing topics such as these. As nowadays I feel like I can get clear and reliable news from him. Not only that, Thanks to him, i feel more informed yet terrible that this is the state the US is in. One more thing: I hate FOX news more than ever now.

Probably the worst part of being a writer for these types of shows is having to watch hours and hours of Fox news.

The last few years has been one huge counter-argument to the idea that people are generally good, intelligent, or able to learn from the past. To be fair, that's most of human history, but recent times have been especially disappointing.
