Sturdy DIY CNC Mill made from Fibre Concrete

Most hobby CNC machines are made from aluminum or even wood. Sturdy alternatives such as casted epoxy granite machines are expensive and require a reinforcement skeleton. Here I show an alternative, using concrete with fibreglass snips (fibre concrete) I built a sturdy machine that does not need an additional steel skeleton. It combines the advantages of casted machines (precise inlayed connections, resistance to vibrations) with a much lower price and ease of construction. Hope this video inspires your own CNC design! Thanks for watching.
Keywords: Glass fiber reinforced concrete (GFRC), Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), Self-consolidating concrete (SCC), Epoxy granite, Polymer concrete, Mineral casting

nice! however, epoxi granite machines do not require steel reinforcement. in fact, the epoxy only stabilises the matrix, the stiffness comes from the quartz or granite infill. when properly cast, those pebbles directly contact each other, so the epoxy granite has the stiffness of the granite (which is much highter than the stiffness of the epoxy matrix)
@preddy09

In addition to what you said, a huge reason people go for epoxy granite bases is for the damping factor, whereas concrete will just be behave like a metal otherwise it would just crack.
@warmesuppe
@warmesuppe 2 месяца назад
@@preddy09 This not true, UHPC has also very good dampening properties.

Definitely great idea for experimenting with designs cheaply but finally does not compare to the overall performance benefits of epoxy granite.

its actually way better than that, but its all useless and pointless if you use a paper thin mdf table, all rigidity for nothing

Please, please follow up with more information on it! I was under the impression that concrete is less than ideal because it is likely to shrink when cured.

I have considered this for years. Every time I look into it I end up over specing everything to the point that it becomes unrealistic to start. The size of components you have used seem reasonable, but please can you tell me if it is possible to machine regular mild steel on this machine?
@grimkarltun7846
@grimkarltun7846 3 года назад
No. The spindle is too fast. The Z-axis is probably also too weak.
@rameezsheikh7576
@rameezsheikh7576 3 года назад
Not this design, but concrete body with some cast iron or steel plates can definitely cut mild steel easily, and spindle speed is not at all a problem but it's a benefit if used with coolent for more feed rate in less time.
@MegaCoolshot
@MegaCoolshot 3 года назад
@@grimkarltun7846 That spindle is definitely capable of cutting steel.
@mihailfelixdumitresc
@mihailfelixdumitresc 2 года назад
@@MegaCoolshot Cutting and cutting well are 2 different things. The bearings would go banana when milling steel for too long; plus the overhang. There is a reason spindles for steel are beefier.

1:19 5 microns across the whole surface? I'm pretty baffled by this considering in most builds a super flat surface that is also perpendicular seems like one of the hardest things to achieve.

Who always tells people concrete machine beds need reinforcement? It's complete nonsense. If you're dead set on using fibers - just clad it in a quasi isotropic carbon fiber laminate. Compound beams from Cf clad polymer concrete test surprisingly good considering the comparably tiny amount of fibers and resin. Thought to be a result of the strengthening of the concrete itself by confinement as well as by taking the tensile loads.
