This is a true masterpiece. Songs like this tell stories, have a theatrical sense to them. Songs like this reign supreme over the garbage on the radio nowadays. I'd much rather listen to this than whatever Eminem has to bitch about.
Everyone knows that Dennis DeYoung can sing, he's always been know for his set of pipes. What most people didn't know until this song was done as a live recording was just what a fabulous keyboard player he is. I have been playing the piano for 55 years, so it is not something I say lightly
It was about 4 years ago while driving this song came over the radio. It was so uplifting that for a while it pulled me out of my depression. Just about the time when we loss hope it's beutiful songs like this one that say " Hey never give up because just over the horizon are a bunch of angels wait to put us onboard their spaceship to leave this hell on earth." LOL The amazing element of this song is how it has a unique way of intergrading technology & spirituality all in one sentence,
Intersting.... rarely see vintage performances with guys/girls wearing earplugs. As a sufferer of tinnitus (ringing in the ears)I can definitely relate to why he is wearing them !!!
Kenny & I (along with my ex wife) saw them at the Civic Theater in San Diego on their 1983 tour. Watching the movie Like Father brought me here tonight, along with all the wonderful memories of this sweet song. Thank you so much Styx, you guys put on a fantastic show!
You are definately correct and it is a shame. They were awesome back in the mid 80s when I saw them in jax florida. Have heard lately that they just do not sound good anymore so I will keep the memory of the old VH concerts I saw back then. I do wish dennis could return to styx tho. I think they would sound just like the old styx because i have seen them many times over the years and they always put on a great show. No disrespect to gowan but would love to see them re-unite...
Quite the light hearted song. One of the most original classics of all time. Dennis De young has the voice, no one else can come close to his tones. Styx that blended in the eighties gave us many number of hits, Sail away, Time on my hands, Mr Roboto, Krakatoa, and a host of other gold hits which will stay with us forever. Their new album is now on the stands too. Yes, they got back together to release it.
One of our class Songs from 1979. along with THE WALL. THAT SONG WAS MY TWINS FAVE STYX SONG. IT ALWAYS PICKED HIM UP ON A BAD DAY. 4 MONTHS AGO I JUST LOST MY TWIN. SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS. MY BAD.
3:13 Wow, their bass player looked like Freddie Mercury. When I graduated from HS this song was played after the ceremony as we went out hootin and hollerin. Of course it's been played at every reunion along with other period mid to late 70's music.
i saw them live a few weeks ago, its not the same pianist anymore tho, its another guy, he did it just as well, it was so captivating, i couldnt keep my eyes off him as he played it, brilliance
I've seen STYX many times and they still rock but it would be awesome if they would let dennis return.Much like VH without DLRoth but now that DLR is back with VH wouldn't it be nice if STYX were to get dennis back?Seeing Dennis when i was a teen inspired me to learn how to play keys myself and I finally got me an Oberheim obxa and ob8 just so i could get "that sound".Gowan has my respect but I like dennis better.
The audience timing issue is actually a very typical phenomenon. It's caused by the natural delay of the auditorium. Their ears are tricked and their timing skewed as a result.
Chuck is just as much a part of this lineup. Can't remember Gowan saying he is Dennis. How is Dennis doing these songs not considered covers? It goes both ways.
Who? Tommy Shaw? Yeah. He's a supurb musician/guitarist/song writer/mandolin player/keyboardist/pianist/singer. Lol. I'm also astonished that Gibson hasn't made him a signature guitar yet.
Above all the song is great ! I don't think that South Park ruined the song. You may think that way if you hate South Park.I find South park as a genius masterpiece and Eric Cartman sing this song of hope... (:sweeeeeeeeeeet:) And of course that america will see that again, you have it here on you tube, check it out ;) :PPP
