It's now January 2024! Still listening. We saw Styx last night in Clearwater, FL and it was fantastic! Tommy sounds exactly the same. They are so talented.
Hi I lived in Clearwater for 20 years. Now I'm in Indiana 😢. I'm seeing the same show this summer, did they do this song? And Suite Madam Blue? 🤘✌️ Thanks 😊
I totally agree! Now that I'm older, I firmly believe that it was the Right thing for Styx to go their separate ways because it allowed Tommy to stay on his personal path. What an Amazing Person!
Mike Smith, you've got me by a year......Saw Styx for the first time as a 15 year old (or maybe 16), long f***ing time ago. They were warm up band to Aerosmith. They completely blew Aerosmith off the stage. On top of that, Steven Tyler came out and was so drugged up and the crowd booed them, and threw stuff on stage. Aerosmith cut their show short and I was hooked on Styx from that point on. Great show, great memories, great music....rock on "Old" Buddy.
Styx is another great band that has been snubbed by the Rock and roll hall of fame for years.....this song brings me back to my teenage years.....love these guys
@joekosobucki2 SYYX est un groupe avec des musiciens très talentueux. Certains rapers sont talentueux aussi comme M and M. J'aime tout les genres de music😍
No flashy dance moves or explosions or crazy costumes. Just a world class talent and songwriter, sharing music with fans. I have seen Styx live several times. I always left the show wishing for more.
Well Styx is from a diff time when the music was about the music. I have seen them a few times very good. It's almost better now to see a live local band that is hungry, you get an honest music show. Been a musician for a long time. I miss the days when it was about the music
It’s super emotional for me to watch videos like this as someone who was born in 1960 and actually was an impressionable teen when this greatness first came out. It makes me very nostalgic and wish for a happier time.
We definitely grew up in a different era. Same with me. Early 60s birth I still play music. Coming out of the 60s and seventies with music we look at Rock a lot different than the grunge style today Etc. I liked a lot of the Hair Band music for It's Hard Punch and drive, but I can't live by it alone.. my mind makes me drift back into the seventies when life was so much more simple, people were a lot different, and our country had a lot more calm to it. Amen brother. Great words
May 1960. I too loved Styx back when. Fortunately i took a several decades break and am now keen on Tommy Shaw once again. Y’all have checked his Daryyl’s House visit?
I was really lucky as an older teen in the late 70s. I delivered a piano for a Styx concert that earned me a backstage pass. Mind blown. I watched and listened to so many great songs from a stone’s throw but Crystal Ball was surreal magic. Fast forward - wow - Tommy’s voice seems as strong and expressive as ever. So happy for him. He deserves much happiness, much success. What a song writer, artist, performer, human. Kudos.
I was 16 in 1977 use to crank this up in my '75 jeep CJ5 (RENEGADE) w/ LEVI package and my KRACO stereo /w BOX 6X9 speaker's SO distorted SO loud Mom & Dad alway's could hear me coming up the road............Such a GREAT time to be a teenager !!!!
>use to crank this up in my '75 jeep CJ5 (RENEGADE) w/ LEVI package and my KRACO stereo /w BOX 6X9 speaker's SO distorted----brings back a lot of memories of car jam from that day...... BOX 6X9 speakers! Some were mounted in the rear deck under the rear glass, but some were in speaker boxes built just for that size & shape of speaker. -----Memories!-----
I was also born in 1960. I have seen Styx twice live, once with Deyoung and once after. Tommy Shaw is the best!! I love everything he does. Thanks for the video for us older rockers!
I remember when this song first came out. It was and still is my favorite Styx song. Tommy Shaw still has an awesome voice! He and Paul Rodgers of Bad Co still amaze me at how good they sound today.
Seen them both in the last two years. Amazing! I'm a singer just passing 60. Believe it or not if you don't abuse it, or even if you do a little, the voice can still be developed till at least 60. I know it for fact. I can't believe I sing higher now than 5 years ago with better resonance, but I do. It's crazy.
There are several comments regarding Tommy Shaw I have to say I completely agree. The guy has a very good voice,he knows how to use it. Watch him as he sings. He's relaxed and hits notes with great accuracy. Styx is one of the all time old great bands. Today's music is garbage compared to this.
these kids are having the time of their lives playing some of the best music ever written. :D My hat's off to the band, the orchestra, and everyone who made all this possible!
Tommy Shaw has to be one the most underrated vocalist of all time. It's truly sad when you think about it. Especially since we're stuck listening to all these shitty singers on the radio, TV and sporting events. When was the last time there was a new artist that had a voice even close to this guy??? And this concert wasn't THAT long ago and this guy can still hit those high notes with perfection:)
Love Styx. And Tommy Shaw's voice is certainly fantastic. Daryl Hall had him on his show and about dropped his teeth out of his mouth when Tommy sang a few notes at the beginning. Then Tommy said the most amazing thing--this man who sings like an angel, plays guitar, dulcimer, etc and has written all these gorgeous songs and performed with the CYO doesn't read music or know academic music theory. He just sings and plays by ear. Blows me away how much raw musical talent that takes.
Many musicians from that "era" didn't site read or know theory, myself included. There were so many great players to learn from and songs to cover its just the way many musicians learned and the best thing about it was the sky was the limit from a creative standpoint.
I saw them in concert in 82. They are still as awesome as they were then. Their concerts are epic. Everything comes together so well, the vocals, keyboard, bass, drums, and the guitar solos always blow me away. The talent in this group is amazing! Tommy Shaw still has it!
This is such a great music video...I can't stop watching it...really, I come back and watch Styx and CYO like every other day...Wow !! What a life changing experience for these wonderful talented young adults to play with such a great band !
One of the BEST bands in history. Great concept by Ms Grossman. The energy and talent of those kids is amazing. Watch the concert everytime it's aired. Great post! Thanks
I come back and watch this once in awhile for quite a few years. Growing up in the 70s they were one of my favorite bands. Tommy Shaw... The solo on this version of crystal ball is just amazing. This is one incredible veteran guitar player. So glad I grew up in the 60s and 70s... Music today can't even begin to give me the feeling those bands did back in the day. So much better music back then
This is without a doubt the best recording ever. Message, sensitivity, emotion, lyrics, you name it .absolute poetry by a band that was channeling the angels !
❤️❤️❤️❤️ you Tommy Shaw!!! Incredible Musician...Talented Vocalist... and STILL sounds EXACTLY the same ( if not BETTER” ) since to 70’s!! 🙏 can’t wait till he tours again!! 💗😊
Tommy always had such a y❤uthful appearance & now he is aging very well. Voices change as we age & Tommy continues to maintain such control over his vocals, which isn't always an easy feat. What a beautiful version of "Crystal Ball" with Styx & that orchestra behind him. I miss his double neck guitar but this 12-string sounded mighty fine. WELL DONE!
if dennis deyoung had just waited, well, he would've gotten his chance for an orchestra accompiament. this is some really good stuff. the kids had a blast. what a rock show.
there's a newer version out with a solo Tommy Shaw and the CYO. Have yet to see it on You Tube, but it is available on CD and HD download. Still awesome
There were so many incredible rock groups from those days, so much unbelievable talent, but I believe this band had the best all around vocals, when you put them all together, JY, Dennis and Tommy, the best vocals of any band, the Beatles were way up there as well. 3 great singers in one great band.
Styx & REO deserve to be in the Rock n Roll hall of fame. They are credited (or blamed by some critics) for creating "Arena Rock". Although many critics sneer at the genre, it was important for it's time. Based on their body of work and record sales, as well as the longevity of both bands, they deserve a place. Both bands are still out there, still playing guitar based rock and still filling arenas. Rock is really guitars and live shows. These bands have earned the a spot in Rock n Roll HOF.
Freaking Iconic i grew up on this music. These guys were not much older than the students when they started the masters pass along the craft. Well done kids you did yourselves proud.
Lawrence Gowan is ridiculously good. I wonder what would have been if Gowan found these men sooner. Styx made Gowan's hit A Criminal Mind a mindblowing rock classic.
Totally mystifying + magical song from Tommy Shaw with this impeccable CYO + choir. . Kuddos to these young people Talent oozing from every corner of this stage
Tommy Shaw is a true artist. He is fantastic live. I would have loved it if he had sung this song when I saw him in the Marysville arena. The show was great. Foreigner, Styx, and Def leppard. Took really good pictures of Tommy Shaw. He is like fine wine. He just gets better.
I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me or am I even it’s mind all perhaps I’ll get a chance to look ahead and see ………Wow!! 63 here & still listening. For sure they should be in RR HOF!!!! What would you do if you had a Crystal Ball!?!?!?
I love this song.🤎🎶🎶 The other day I was playing with a snow globe. ❄️ 🌎 The snow globe had glitter in it, that would stay suspended for a long time. ❄️ ✨ I love Crystal Ball. 🤎🔮
