No fancy costumes, no make-up, no spitting blood, no hotel room reckage, no one too drunk to play, no little girl tantrum, no drama. Just 3 guys on top of their game playing inspired music. That's what rock is all about, music!
Wall Street Journal did a business bio on the brown M&Ms of Van Halen, you should read it. I think it was WSJ. Some business publication. Very specific reason that VH did that. @@thomasgilson6206
The most physically talented power trio in the history of rock and roll. Each one an absolute master of their instruments, and true craftsman of songwriting. There will never be another.
All of these bands are great. Rush, ELP, the Police, ZZ Top. Exceptional bands with an incredible body of live and recorded work. I'm in awe of what we can click and watch. Great time to be alive.
WOW!!!! Bob. I couldn't have said it better. I was lucky to have seen them live and I was blown away by this great band and especially, Neil's drumming. The maestro will live on...... in their music. RIP Neil.
All three are on top form in this performance but for me Alex really shines here. His tone is amazing, the solo is fabulous, everything is just stellar. I would have left the show after Rush had played. Nothing can follow that!
@@andrewwalker5974 On January 31, ’69, Led Zeppelin opened for Iron Butterfly, then one of the world’s biggest bands. Led Zeppelin received such a resounding approval from the audience, which Doug Ingle, lead singer for Iron Butterfly decided to scrap the show. Reasons being are that Iron Butterfly was afraid that they can’t produce such an effect on their crowd… in their own concert…in which they are headlining.
Back in the early 90’s I played this on my Sony Walkman while traveling on an old train from Kanchanaburi to Bangkok in the jungle during a monsoon rain. It’s still one of my most perfect moment 😅
Ken Neuts .....Without doubt.....Without DOUBT!!!....The man came up with some of the most difficult & WILDLY creative guitar parts EVER.....and he seems to make a mistake approximately NEVER.
saw them at Worchester Centrum--1990--Presto tour---Paul Gilbert/Mr. Big opened. I was struck by all the visuals----and weird videos that played during the concert. It was cool--but noisy. Echo--y. Lots of parking lot--long haired stoners walking around. Not exactly what I expected--I guess I thought it'd involve more math and science or something. But---they were a rock band--lol.
Listen, RUSH was the country we wanted Canada to be from the survivors of failed world before...make time to listen to Neil Peart’s lyrics discerning Christians
I went to a Rush concert, and got my laundry done. :P Sure sad about Neil's passing. A giant on drums, a great lyricist, fantastic musician, and just a really nice bloke!
I love how Geddy is looking at his best friend, so proudly killin it with his solo. They’ve played this in front of thousands so many times before, but you can see the pure enjoyment they have. I respect that so much. Amazing musicians!
Sometimes nice guys don't finish last. Sometimes they stay true to who and what they are and end up w/one of the largest and most loyal fan bases ever - while reaching the R&R Hall of Fame. Their music continues to age well. RIP Neil. Missed and never forgotten.
You will NEVER hear 3 people in any genre of music sound as good or better than RUSH. Universally admired and respected by every musician from every style of music
Lynyrd skynyrd 1977 at Oakland Colliseum is truly the single most insane live performance in the history of rock .. check it out ... they were the GODS .. and shortly after that a plane crash killed key band members and altered the band forever ... I love RUSH and they are under rated but I doubt anyone in rock will dispute that Lynyrd takes the trophy ..
Loved them in high school, we were even referred to as Rush boys, the entire group of us who enjoyed Rush sound. It was early 80s and now, I just turned 57 and still love the band and this song. So good, every time I hear that guitar in a beginning and right away it is mesmerizing how amazing this will be, this song and memories that go with it. Timeless and ageless music.
@@natev1956 Seen Rush at the since long burned down Summer Gardens in Port Dover Ontario along with Max Webster and Dan Hill. I also watched them play at BCI (Brantford Collegiate Institute - A local high school) a year later. I was a Rush fan long before anyone even knew who Rush was. Sadly there were no cell phones or video devices back then to capture the moment. At least I can still remember it at 65 years old. No band has ever stuck with me as much as this local Ontario band called Rush.
@@DaveBuildsThingsI first saw them on the Fly by Night tour, opening for Nazareth. Who could have known they’d leave such a legacy? And a damn nice set o dudes, as well!
I agree 110%. I see SOOO many comments on different bands/musicians on how they are "So underrated" ....and they'll be talking about people that are ALWAYS getting accolades from just about EVERYONE....... THIS is finally a case where I think you can say that Alex is criminally underrated......I very rarely hear his name brought up when discussing great rock guitarists.....and I don't know why.....he is an extremely talented player.....unless maybe he just gets overshadowed by Neil (RIP) and Geddy? Either way.....I'd like to see his name in far more "great rock guitarist" conversations......Not to mention he seems like a great guy personally, too.
but he isnt ,its just it was long ago, there was a time all 3 were in the best lists all the time,Alex is recognized by his peers which means way more...
This 55 year old homegrown American thanks the boys of Rush for so many wonderful memories. Summer of 83 in the Cayman Islands and listening to nothing but the signals album. Spearfishing with no limits or restrictions , living next door to the BAREFOOT MAN George. I couldn’t ask for a better time in my life🙏. Be a good person and keep on ROCKIN’✊
Also 55 and was turned on to RUSH, VH, and YES in 1979 by my 16 yr old babysitter who's dad was a big wig at Capitol Records. By 1981 my best buddy and I were so into Rush, namely 2112 that we turned down 2 free tix to see the Stones at the LA Coleseum with his uncles and a rented Winnebago, because to us it was like cheating on Rush. Never a big Yes fan, but bought the Yes Songs album, and like Rush you have to appreciate the level of musicianship.
@@cowboysfan782008 I worked on the Capitol Records building installing Terrazzo... Also in 91-92 round there I did Eddie and Alex's handprints in Terrazzo In front of the Guitar 🎸 Center in Hollywood...I got to meet them when they stopped by to see the work. Went to Downey High with James Hetfield ✌️
@@user-xh8ii2hj6r That's cool. I knew a couple older people that grew up in the Arcadia/Pasadena area that both saw VH way back when they still played keg party's. I thought Hetfield was Brea Olinda HS class of 81'. Not a big Metalica fan, so could be wrong.
@@cowboysfan782008 How funny...the only time I saw Metallica they weren't Metallica yet it was at a keg party in Norwalk! James went to Downey...he used to walk around playing music in his head with his head bobbing up and down...I never really was a big Metallica fan...I like em now more than I ever did! I was never in to screaming! ✌️
@@Thunda1986 True. And one has to be lucky enough to find the "right" band to be in. RUSH was the perfect vehicle for Neil and he for them. You probably can find a 13 year old Japanese girl on YT that can play his parts note for note, but could she have written them and lyrics too?? No!
The thing that blew me away about Rush shows was the joy. People left their egos and cynicism at the door and were JOYFUL. Although I'm saddened by their departure and Neil's death, I feel incredibly grateful and fortunate for having experienced their magic.
Ryan, my old boss was a huge Rush fan... He said they came through here in Tulsa Oklahoma back in the early 80s and there was literally 100 people in the entire arena. He was worried they would cancel the show, but instead Rush played for 3 solid hours as if there were 30,000 people present. Best show he ever saw.
So true! They loved what they did and their joy was contagious. Rush fans are so chill. I have been going to every concert of theirs since Roll the Bones and I have NEVER seen a fight at any of them!
@@BobbyGeneric145 That is freaking insane! I would love to see a recording of that show. It doesn't surprise me coming from these gentleman though. They are very humble dudes.

He puts it differently. He said he kept learning throughout his musical life. I am glad that some, like Todd Suchermam, have decided to follow where he led.
I know what you mean, I was brought up on music like this thanks to my parents, who have also passed on, this is what got me into music, I remember air guitaring to Witch Hunt as a toddler in the early 80s
Another 3 CANADIANS rocking it to the heavens. These 3 guys are probably the most talented musicians ever to hit the stage. Exit stage left boyz!!! Gods of Rock, and every other musician thinks so as well
I can't tell you how many times I have watched this performance and it stills amazes me! Simply put musicians are rarely this good at their instruments! What a perfomance and incrdeible sound
He does so much in just this one song, I'm sad he never let anyone know about his condition, like he didnt trust his fans to give him support thru it :(
With RUSH, their rock is like funky rock. It has a real rhythm to it. It's not hard edged, which I find grates on my brain, sometimes. One of THE best rock bands in the World
When I first heard this song, I imagined an entire backing band, multiple guitars, etc. For ONE man to create both rhythm and lead at the same time is astounding. For three men to create multilayers of this sound is more so. Good lord. How? How do they do this?
How they start out with the Stone's "Paint it Black," which musically and magically transforms to "Spirit of Radio" is SO ROCKING...IT HURTS...LOL! LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE.
@@mikewelch4673 Listening to this song from 1:50 on it seems that Journey - Don't Stop Believin' is a rip of this song :) (did not go through all the comments if anybody else spotted this)
I can't still believe I was there in 2003. it was an awesome festival "SARSStock", one of the best I've ever been in my life with The Rolling Stones, AC DC, Rush and The Guess Who at the Downsview Park in Toronto, it was one day before my 23th birthday... What a day to remember !
@@doogan1971 I think Geddy unknowingly dropped hints about Neil. Every time someone asked him about Neil in interviews, he seemed to get a bit down. I think he knew about it and tried his best to keep it a secret
Now, I live in a rehabilitation center and am planning to buy a CD player. When I do, I am buying "Permanent Waves" for a 3rd time, along with "Clockwork Angels." RUSH makes me happy! 🤗 RUSH is my favorite band of all time! 😍
the best , the best one of the best drummer in the world they geddy lee is Jewish they have alot of talent their songs do speak of people nerds not fighting in
I was there. Imagine seeing Neil Peart meeting and shaking hands with Charlie Watts right there from The Rolling Stones. The 2 greatest drummers in the WORLD. Then Rush breaks into such a strong but tasteful version of ‘Paint It Black’. Neil, playing Charlie’s song with such respect and effort. Such power from just 3 musicians. It made me so proud to be Canadian, to see our best band projecting to half a million people. I’ve kept the photo of Neil and Charlie shaking hands. Both the top of their class, and against all odds in the music industry- both are mild mannered and do not seek out fame. You have never heard of either of them in the news for outlandish behavior. And now - tragically, both have passed away. I count myself so lucky to have been here.
You know how many fans red your comment and became jealous that you are about to hear all these legendary songs for the 1st time.. It truly is a right of passage.. Welcome!
Their music lives forever! And there is 4 DECADES worth of material. A humble suggestion: don't just listen to the AWESOME musicianship - READ THE LYRICS.
I’m in the same boat as you are, I actually just got a record player and one of the first albums I got was Moving Pictures, even though I knew like 2 songs on it I couldn’t pass it up, now it’s like one of my favorite albums of all time 😂
When something we love & is near and dear to our hearts is suddenly gone 4 ever = heartache . So I raise my glass to Neil Peart #1 4 ever. Accept no substitutes
They fill the space where the bass amplifiers would be. Somewhere along the line, Geddy started running his bass directly to the soundboard and to the PA system.
The overwhelming human tragedy in this is that a young daughter has lost her father, a wife has lost her husband, parents have lost their son and siblings have lost their brother. We grieve for our loss, but theirs is by far the greater. Neil Peart. What comes to mind? Integrity, honesty, loyalty, humility, compassion - all things that make a good human being. The talent was on loan from a higher power, but he had the spirit for that blessing to be bestowed upon him. Thank you Neil. Alex and Geddy, thank you for the opportunity you gave him to follow his passion. We are forever grateful.
Nice Eulogy. Just one thing I have to say though is HE lost his Daughter and Wife a long time ago. Read the book ""Ghost Rider"" (excellent) I can't write all that it's aboutb, but basically Neil travelled 55,000 miles on the back of his bike in 16 months in search of himself and a reason to live after he lost his daughter and wife😢
@@rhoho2217 I'm feeling hostility in your reply. My comment wasn't meant to be sarcastic at all. I really meant ""nice Eulogy"" it was written nicely. I didn't know that you were talking about his second wife and daughter. But anyway that book is fantastic.
There's a petition fully signed to put one at Lakeside Park in St. Catherines, Ontario. It's literally twenty minutes from my house and I'm in New York State. ... I live on the border in Niagara Falls.
Never appreciated these guys till later on ..I mean really appreciate...they were awesome! Always will be✌️ Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school CA ✌️
Alex always sounds like he's playing an industrial version of lead guitar...He always creates a signature that sounds like multiple guitars. He's a virtuoso just like his bandmates.
I just can't stop watching this. Must have watched it at least 50 times so far. These guys are rock wizards! One of the greatest live performances I think I've ever seen. I saw them in Worcester, MA in 1994. I didn't realize how lucky I was at the time. These guys are truly a gift to the world!
Centrum was a great venue for Rush also Boston, just big enough to have an good view everywhere. The Garden was atrocious to see them but good sound . First concert 1980 last concert I saw was 99 an concussion took away my ability to ever see them live again .
So sad to see Neil, with strength and weight. In just 5 years he would be gone. Do any of us know when our last days will be when we're looking and feeling fine. God speed Neil 🎶🎶🎶🎶🏁
Speed changes, timing changes, key changes, tempo changes and never ever a missed note. These guys are absolutely incredible. They were in 1981 when I went to my first concert - Moving Pictures and they were up to the end.
Back in 75 they were way ahead of their time and a lot of people didn’t get their music. Their music will take you around the Universe and back. I’ll Always Love RUSH.
I came here after hearing of Neil's passing. We've lost a monumental talent, a real hero to millions although he hated the concept of fame. We will miss the wisdom and the wit, the precise musicianship but the songs, books and memories will remain. Rest in peace Neil. And thanks.
Neil set the bar as to how good a drummer can get when I was just starting out playing the drums I think around 1973-74 till today I can't think of any other rock drummer that I wanted to be as good as. . .the guy just blew my mind more and more as they released each album he also had some really impressive drum kits that looked like you needed three people to play them! Needless to say he had quite the impression on me and every body that I know especially if you knew how complex his style of playing really was . . .all you gotta do is get a drum set and some sticks sit down and just try to play like him I know that there are some very talented drummers out there that can probably duplicate him but there will never be another Neil Peart it's just not possible . . Rest in peace and thank you
