There were so many things for me that changed the SU63-D from the older full size U61 design. The full size model for me is a huge difference in that it seems to move so freely, compared to the restrictive movement of the SU63 design. Two of the biggest issues for me are the washer design and the bearing spring that puts pressure on the bearing and nipple to create a stable environment so it will work. I tested it without the spring and it would not go into the trip lever to change to the reverse movement. It would sit at the arc stop and would not move any further. When I would try to give it a nudge, it would slide right back to the edge of the stop. The movement forward worked fine, but because of the nylon and rubber washer combination, it was too slippery. The bearing spring is necessary unlike the larger design with the older fibrous washer, which worked perfectly without the spring.
For me that is my biggest resistance to this smaller design and the change in washer design. I like the freedom movement of the larger U61 design with the old design washer. The issue with the old design washer is that over time it gets slick and then the sprinkler stops working. For me it is a minor disadvantage, and as I showed one wore out the nipple and washer completely.
You will note the difference and improvement in the before and after, cleaning the nipple and bearing sleeve. I am always disappointed to feel the oil or grease that someone put on the sleeve from many years ago.
