You made it, you've got AWD so nothing can stop you right! Bring on the snow and rain the Subaru will make it through. Well not exactly, the tire choice that you use on your car will ultimately dictate how it will function in different weather conditions. If you are not using the appropriate tires you won't make it very far in the wrong conditions. Every year I see the posts where people try and drive in the snow with winter tires on and it never ends well for them....

Continental DSW06 Extreme are badass, one other note to pay attention to. The yellow/green dot on the sidewall is where the factory wants the valve stem placed when mounted. By doing this we got 3 tires to absolute zero with no weight needed. The one tire only took 4 grams !! Summer we use Nitto NTO5, totally suck in rain !!

@@wyvern3525 3rd summer on the pilot sports, dry grip excellent, wet handling great. 300 treadwear so they dont really wear much. I don't have any complaints on this tire they are very confidence inspiring while taking turns, the front end stay planted no matter what. Now if the bf Goodrich tires are working for you i dont see a reason to change as i know that is a very good tire as well that doesn't fall short to the pilot sports. And depending on the size the pilot sports can get expensive.

@@wyvern3525 having moved from FL to WI ... my suggestion if you have winter envy is to take a vacation and play in some snow and let that memory be what you think of it forever :) or I can let you know how great you have it; no salt to corrode your car, not just body but fasteners as well making maintenance much more interesting. no worry about idiots around you driving on snow too fast, with summer tires, etc to wreck your car. no having to scrap ice or feet of snow off your car in the mornings before you can drive. Think about mowing your grass. Now think of some crazy universe where your grass can grow 5" in an hour. It can grow 2' overnight, and you have to mow it before you can get your car to go to work/shop/anything. I mean the pretty white snow is beatiful ... then if it doesn't keep snowing, around cities it turns into dark nasty slush. It is fun to drive in with proper tires, and usually after the first week or two the idiots calm down and its a bit safer lol Fluid Film and other solutions help with corrosion. A good gas powered snow blower helps with the driveway. Nothing is insurmountable for sure ... but I do long for the days of not having to do all those little things; but the trade off is I don't have 110 degree summers or 3 hurricanes a month. It's all fun in hindsight tbh. Can't go wrong with Michelins imo, if you got them already I hope they've been serving you well!

I ran the Blizzak WS80 tires on my 2015 Forester XT for 3 winters and loved them. So this year I grabbed a set of the new Blizzak WS90 tires for my 2019 STI. Car isn't a daily driver, so I almost could get away with just garaging it for the winter (and saving the cost of buying dedicated winter wheels and tires), but I wanted that extra layer of security just in case I decide to take it out in the cold/snow. I've heard nothing but good things about the Michelin Pilot Sport 4s, including that they are actually very capable in wet weather, so that's what I'm leaning toward when it comes time to change out my summer tire. Really glad you decided to put out a video like this, as so many people don't realize just how important proper tires are for your car. I've heard more than one person say that, other than the driver mod, it's the best upgrade you can make to your car.

Agreed tires play such an important role in your car and it is wo overly looked when it comes to both maintenance and modification. Please let me know how you like the 4s when you get them. If I could find a good summer tire that handles well on the rain that would be perfect. What are your winters generally like any major snow or ice?

A nice fresh set of winter tires is one of the most fun things you can experience in a Subaru on a big snow day. You can break loose when you want and you can lock back in when you want. You have crazy control in a situation where so many other people do not. I run Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 XL on a downsized 18" wheel (245/40R-18). I live in northern Utah, so I get a good 4-5 months a year when temps are cold enough to justify both winter tires and a second set of wheels to make it easy for me to switch them in and out.

Biggest thing for me that dedicated winter tires helped with in PA was my ABS system on my 02 forester. It was hyper sensitive in the snow on all seasons, which caused a bunch of problems during normal stopping. Did a lot of reading about it and seems a bunch of people had that issue with some of the older subaru ABS systems. Put the winters on and made a world of difference.

Haven't ran the tires in rainy conditions as rain season has not happened yet but overall for the price they are great. I had both of those tires for my e39 Dinan 5, the Ventus v12 was surprisingly good for it's price, I threw some on in between track tires. I had the i-pikes on my WRX and they were very good. The Vredersteins and Hakkapeliittas I've had seemed about even and were ~15% gripper in loose snow than the Hankooks, but the i-pikes are also impressive for the price point like the Ventus. I run 225/45 R17 winter And 245/30 R18 summer I've found that going thinner with a higher sidewall bites into snow more quickly and pushes slush out of its way. It feels like they're less likely to hydroplane but I'd like to see a real world test.

Uniroyal = Michelin General = Continental Some times you can save some money by figuring what sub brands belong to which major brands. I also check out TireRack's user ratings/reviews and their performance test results/comparisons. I live in WI, we get below zero most winters now, so winter tires are pretty much the go to. I had a set of summer tires, they felt squirrely at 45F on my RX8 and couldn't move up a 3% incline with any amount of snow on the ground, had a set of performance winters, they were still a little too slippery at too low throttle input, switched to x-ice and it was pretty grippy. Like he said, never cheap out on tires; you can buy inexpensive tires that are fit for purpose. The General Altimax Arctic is a damn good winter tire, tried them before and work great, never studded them. The General RT43 is a decent all season. (I still prefer Michilen tires) AWD doesn't help you stop or take tight turns, tires do; awd only helps to apply power to the ground to get moving where you otherwise might not have.

tires are so damn important its the only thing of your car which actually makes contact with the road. i own a gc8 type r sti and when i bought it it had some new but cheap chinese tires on they kinda worked okay in dry conditions but they where so horrible in the wet i got wheelspin in 3rd gear going straight with the dccd set on open, with the dccd set in the middle the wheelspin wasnt that bad anymore but therefore it understeered alot so i threw the tires on the trash after a few days now i got some toyo proxy sport in 225/45 r17 and its a difference like night and day, also things like sidewall stiffnes makes a huge difference how the car feels (chinese was very soft and the toyos are pretty stiff giving a very good feedback) i cant recommend getting new and good tires enough
@Smeedia

My point exactly, Tires are so overlooked when it comes to what you pay for. It's not always a fun purchase to make but they are one of the most critical elements on car for maintaining grip and traction. Like I said its not only the drivers safety but everyone else around them on the road too that they could potential endanger.

@@Smeedia the new toyo proxys sport are really great never even got close on their limits in dry conditions and never had problems in the wet- except for accerelating hard out of hair pins in first or second gear you get understeer on turn exit but i think thats because of the suspensions setting (i run a pretty high suspension travel) and weight is shifting to the rear so the front gets lighter but also depends how the dccd is set up. overall a great sport tire and it also has rank "A" in the EU wet brake label ... i mainly got these because they are a great compromise between wet and dry conditions grip^^ and since my car doesnt even has abs i completly rely on my tires :D

For high performance all season, two other really, really good choices are the Falken FK 460 and the newly released Potenza Sport A/S by Bridgestone. Both of them are known to last with really good dry and wet performance with large side blocks for a rigid sidewall (cornering) and water evacuation seams.

@ChasWG

So I just got my 2020 WRX and of course it came with the Dunlop tires and that night I took it home it was supposed to snow here in Denver. SO I also had to buy a set of winter tires. I wish I had gone with my gut instinct to get a set of all season tires as opposed to the winter tires as was suggest. Here in Denver it can get real snowy, but in between snow storms it can also get rather warm. Sometimes up to 60 degrees during the winter. (thanks global warming!) The winter tires are complete beasts when its snowy and icy, but holy crap they are just terrible on dry, warmer roads as so often happens. Scared the crap out of myself the other day on a long, twisty on ramp to the highway. This is my second Subaru and on my old Legacy 3.6R it did wonderfully on the Yokahoma all seasons in both the snow and the summer. I get it, this is more of a performance car than the 3.6R was, but the winter to summer tire thing is probably going to drive me nuts. And when it does get warm and dry, those Continental Viking Contact 7's that are on my car now are going to need to be watched closely. At speed, in dry conditions on those warmer days they are simply terrible and could be a real problem for me. Once both the summer tires and winter tires wear out, I'll be buying some real good all seasons. I'm not racing this thing or driving to the 10's.
@Smeedia
@Smeedia 4 года назад
Interesting temperature shifts that Co gets, When you do move to some good all seasons the Extreme contacts work great. Last year when it snowed my buddy and I went out and his tires were gripping onto the snow very well. We had about 4-5" (nothing crazy) But overall they did great in the snow. Or if possible grabbing another set of wheels to swap in and out depending on the weather might not be a bad idea also. But I don't know how rapid the weather can change where you are so it might be annoying swapping them every few days or so.

When it comes to the WRX and the STI - there is quite a performance loss on all season tires in the summer time. They work, but on a hot summer day that corner that you are able to take at 50 on summers - you will find you are squealing and loosing grip at 40 (trust me - I knwo this from experience!) Same applies to winter - All seasons work - but compared to a dedicated winter tire ... Plus - its not a bad parctice to go with a smaller diameter rim for your winters - with taller sidewalls. handles the ruts and potholes much better!
@Sphoxros

Wow...you're a normal person! Seriously though, the Subaru community as a whole is of this opinion that if you're not running summers and winters on two sets of rims you're an idiot, and all seasons are "no seasons." I live in Michigan, and DWS06s were on my first WRX when I got, and I've been running them ever since. There's not a single snow storm they didn't handle. The oem Dunlops were on my new one when I got it, and I replaced them within 2-3 weeks. I went through a twisty road right by my house in the rain, and was about to go through it spirited, like I've done a million times, because F the rain I drive a Subaru, and I slid out in the first turn. I got it back, but I was so freaked out, I bought new tires with my next paycheck. They're great tires, in great conditions, and they are garbage tires in bad conditions. And it precipitates way too much in Michigan to daily them for any duration. Btw. Subscribed. You put out too good and realistic info not to.
