The flats are kinda like rotaries... You have to let them warm up before you can beat them or drive them normally. Im pretty sure 80% of people dont let their engines heat up. In an inline its less a problem.
Hello. I like to video very much. I have an Ej20 with around 118 Hp, i dont know the exact engine code, and cant seem to find out wich model it came from, i have it en my vw t3 caravelle, but it just took the bevaring for the piston rods, and now im lookout for a New one, could you tell me wich engine i have, if ill send u a picture?
Run an AOS / get an equal length header (i know no more rumble)/ get it tuned according to the mods you got/ service regularly with premium synthetic oils..you'll be suprised by the ej257's efficiency & reliability 😎
This video was fantastic. I am saving up for an FA20DIT rebuild and have been trying to learn more about the Subaru engines in general. This was exactly what I was looking for.
Not discussed was the major difference when going from a 2L, in the crankshafts, rods and pistons, but should that be obvious? All newer 2L/2.5L cranks/blocks are directly interchangeable, but the stroke is different. Main & rod bearings on recent turbo EJ20 and EJ25 are identical. If you mix older stuff you will run into issues with the thrust bearing being on main #3 instead of #5. They can be machined to switch to #5.
Really appreciate the technical information and example engines you set aside to demonstrate to us. I'm pretty much just a beginner when it comes to motors, but thanks to channels like yours I'm understanding and expanding my mechanical knowledge. Fantastic to get ideas and know what is possible from experts like yourselves. My EJ20 is currently undergoing an engine rebuild here in Auckland NZ, and I'm learning heaps in the process. I have been documenting the progress in a special video series called "Project WRX" on our RU-vid channel called diecasttvchannel (aka DCTV). We've subscribed to your channel and look forward to watching many more of your awesome videos. Thanks mate.
My 2013 Scion FRS had a recall on FA20 with Valve Springs that crack and timing breaks! What I wanna know is, what i can replace it with that is a direct bolt on? EJ20 or FA20 out of the 2017 Toyota 86 GT?
Excellent video sir! Thanks for all the info - really helped to clarify the differences in motors and applications. I do have one question on the EJ207 and ‘257 (STI’s) though - Q: Are the blocks on the STI motors actually stamped “EJ207” and “EJ257” or will they still just be stamped “EJ20” and “EJ25” and then differentiated by additional stamping/coding to identify whether/not for STI application?
One question regarding the ej20, the wrx block it self is the same as the sti one? Only the inside is different? So it would be possible to just put in the internal if the sti ej207 and i would have all the same advantages? Greeting from Europe
Not sure if people are still active in these comment sections. I have a scion FRS and I am looking to swap an EJ motor from a salvaged WRX or WRX STI. Im looking for an EJ motor that has forged internals from the factory. Which engine should I be looking for and which Subi does it come out of? Doesn't matter if its 2.0 or 2.5 liter. I would appreciate the info thank you!
Hey I have a 2008 Subaru Impreza wrx 2.5 turbocharged with an engine EJ25 and I bought a new engine but this one is JE20 almost everything is the same from the old one but have 3 hoses i think is for the coolant but for the old engine only has 2 on the engine so my question is the engine gonna fit on my old engine?
So basically the FA20 is the better engine over the EJ25, I was gonna get a 2015 wrx but I'll probably just buy a 2016 or 2017 model to get the newer engine.
So what of those engine is the best engine for a impreza that i can built and stay strong. All the letters and numbers gets me all confuse. I have my eyes on a 2005 rs impreza, obviously i want a better engine to run. When i mean to run is race another car. I knew that to get more hp i have to upgrade internals and everything. I heard something about hybrid but dont know what that is.
hey, im a big fan from brasil, I watch all your videos. I have an ej207 that spun bearing and had a cilinder scraped by the piston, with some axyal spacing on the crank... and my friend has a ej204 that is disassembled and ready to sell. is it possible to assemble this ej204 block with ej204 crank, ej207 pistons, rods, heads and eletronics? (i have a spare piston to replace but a ej207 block is too expensive here in brasil) regards and thanks for sharing so much valuable infos on subaru engines!!
I’ve just bought a ‘05/‘06 Liberty GTb tuned bySTI which I’m assuming is the twin turbo EJ20t? Is it possible to swap it for a ej207 straight out of an actual STI? Does anything else need to be changed? Due to physical constraints I had to buy auto, would the gearbox be able to support the extra load? Is there anything that could be improved with the gearbox? TCU tune? I LOVE the size and shape of the gen4 Lib wagon but I’m coming from a Golf R wagon and could always use MOAR. I’m in AUS so would have to get you guys MRT to look at it, I just wanted to ask first so as not to waste time for either of us. Cheers!
Hi.. I bought a Subaru ej20 (written on engine body) imported engine (so I have no vin).. I was told by the seller that it came from Australia and probably MY 00-07.. the motor number is 730128 and has 4 valves per cylinder... is there anyway I can know more information on this engine trim and specs.. I searched a lot online and I’m can’t be sure what exactly is it.. any pointers will be very useful..
Seems the EJ257 is mainly made to cater to the US market which has shitty gas vs. Japan and other parts of the world. This explains why JDM Impreza STI always exclusively employed the EJ207 but thanks to a twin-scroll turbo, significantly higher redline (the forged pistons?) makes equal hp to the larger EJ257 but in a smaller package. The EJ257 makes better torque which Americans seem to want in cars which is likely why it continues to be employed after all these years. However knowing this I wonder how Subaru will go from here, as separate castings & engine sizes are going to be costly for the small company. Given the new Ascent announced the FA24, would the USDM & EU market get a FA24 powered STI while JDM switches over to a high-tune FA20, or all future STI would use one single engine size?
At the 5:00 mark you talk about the FA series "being a worthwhile engine from a performance point of view". That was in 2016, do you feel the same way about them now, 5 years later? Also, I've read that the FA series uses the same piston make up that the EJ series did, which made them brittle. Are the FA series pistons also brittle like the EJ series or are they stronger than the EJ series?
What type of turbo kit would you suggest for a 2016 subaru liberty 2.5 premium? i dont intend to race or anything like that. Just looking for something that will spool up quickly for better performance from low RPM. The CVT seems to be flat until it hits the 3500-4000rpm range. I have read in the US Subaru released a Legacy 2.5 B4 Turbo.
I recently bought a 2010 Subaru Forester (non turbo) which I bought knowing it's an STI. It has the STI badge at the back. The Engine is EJ204. Is it possible that it's actually an STI engine? Am not very good in knowing the differences. If anybody could help I would appreciate. Thank you!
Bought a used '10 STI with a rod knock engine that turned to have a 2.0L 207 engine in instead of 2.5L 257 usdm that it supposed to have and now I don't know if that's a bad thing or a good thing
almanu04 get an evo! Some dealerships still have them and are letting them go for less than msrp. I picked up a brand new 2014 evo x gsr in July 2016 for $30,999. Came out to $34k and some change with taxes and license. I can beat on that engine and I don't have to worry about engine issues. But if you really want reliable hp, get a mustang gt. I have (still have it) a 2012 mustang gt and have zero engine problems. It has 77,000 miles. You can get these for even less. Both my cars are stock and I drive them hard.
Great video, I have 2x ej25 blocks one from an 08 sti, one from an 08 wrx (non sti) the casting stamps is 703 they look identical. Looking to use one in my bug eye. Are these identical blocks? Pistons rod crank? Or does the sti version have any stronger internals?
I just bought a 99 Forester S with the EJ25. Has 110,000 miles on it. It sounds pretty good and your video was very helpful. I dont know much about these engines. I live in Amaerica and I like my V8s lol. Is there anything I should really worry about these engines or are they pretty reliable?
Thanks you. Informative vid. I am in the market for a turbo SUV and looking at Santa Fe or Sorento. Do you deal with these models? Maybe you can shed some light on reliability of common rail fuel systems, fuel choices (reliable suppliers) and DPF filters. I am reluctant to spend a lot of money on cars with diesels that may be fragile.
i have a legacy 2005 gt 2.5L turbo so the ej25 and the engine went out at 150k miles ive had that car for 10 years , i bought a jdm 2.0L turbo engine and its getting installed i hope the engine works good and it lasts , i was told by the shop thats doing my swap that the ej20 will be a direct bolt on to my ej25, is that true ?> i wanted to get your opinion . also the 2.0L engine i bought its jdm and i have an american ecu is that going to cause anything to go bad i was told by the shop no and that the car will run the same as the 2.5 , was wondering what your thoughts are
why did you go backwards on size when all you needed was new pistons? I hope the JDM engine is an old type as the newer ones do NOT gave forged pistons you will need a custom ECU tune immediately
Hi mate. Id love to see a video on differences between the different ej20 blocks. Have bought a TT legacy as an engine donor for my beetle- its an ej20h but no idea how that compares to similar years wrx motors etx
I have an EJ20 in my forester 06 model. Can I put an EJ25 in it without any trouble? I have a Hyundai computer which caused that horrible hesitation with that model. Its been sorted but it still doesn't run quite right.
What does the new Forester XT have and how reliable is it? I had a turbo fail on my Audi A4 thus I am hesitating on getting another turbo charged vehicle. I know Subaru engine tend to use up oil, does that include the XT?
Do you guys have any video on what stuff you use for your rebuilds? or a rebuild video? Ive heard the head gasket and cylinder head bolts needs to be of specific brands or Subaru themselves.
Thanks Brett for the insights on Subaru engines. I'm currently working on a STI conversion of my MY99 Impreza GT including the complete drivetrain with 6-speed gearbox and DCCD. I wasn't sure if the EJ207 always came with forged pistons or just specific model years. So thanks for clearing that up for me.
Hello I have a big question I'm rebuilding my ej25 from my impreza 2.5i to turbo it am getting all forge rod pistons everything top off the line you think is a waist of money that the turbo is not gonna work on that engine please let me know I will appreciate
