For diagnosis and experience I stay tuned to SMA; for car care and repair ChrisFix is the Man. Most subscriptions of any auto channel on YT now (he passed Top Gear a couple months ago) and he earned it. He has more subscribers than the population of my state of Arizona. When I rebuilt the hybrid battery in my son's (formerly mine) 2002 Prius I referred to his video dozens of times.

After watching your video and you stated that you it's more likely the map sensor I mean the mass airflow sensor I was blown away it was the mass airflow sensor with a split on the rubber ring which was raising the temp causing the error. Demonbreed131 - I do believe that is what is called firing the "parts cannon" at a problem. Eric doesn't do that which I also love. I wish he was closer but I am lucky to have a good local independent repair guy in my home town that has never let me down. If he did videos (or Eric was closer) I would gladly let him use my vehicles for videos. Of course If I did Drive my vehicle to Eric he would be amazed at how easy it is to work on because of the lack of rust. Sucks that he is across the entire country from me.

This channel saves me a fortune financially. I think I may have a look at fixing my own car when there is a problem. All seems do-able. Then I watch someone who knows what they're doing make complicated repairs on a vehicle and I decide to hand the job over to someone who is qualified and competent to do the work. Instead of mucking it all up myself then running to a saviour to pay them to undo my mess and fix the original problem properly I just go straight to the proper guy who does the repair and I pay the one bill for the fix instead of paying them to undo my mess and then do the fix. Workshop manuals say things like 'undo the retaining screw' Never how to overcome that it's rusted solid which is a job in itself. The number of tools these guys have and the knowledge they have is mind blowing, not my skillset by a long way. Hats off to the guys that can. I earn a wage at the work which I can do, and use the money to employ someone who can to do the work which I can't. Thats the best way. When I wobble I just watch guys like this to reinforce my determination not to embark of a pointless journey where I will surely need to be rescued.

Eric is a master of "how you can identify the problem" and do a repair that will be reliable while ChrisFix is a master of showing exactly how to do common repairs. Pontiac $300 .... Subaru was like $1.37 and half of that cost was probably doing the paper work ....

I never had a LICK of trouble from that engine and when I finally smashed the car up, it was 2015 and I still had not had a head job. Didn't lose oil or coolant (till I smashed it with 175K on the odometer) I replaced on O2 sensor and one knock sensor during my entire ownership. Head gasket issue has been resolved by Subaru years ago but Eric just can't let it go. Always has to mention it when taping any fix on Subies. I have owned 6 Subies and have over 1,000,000 miles total since 1990 with virtually no problems at all. I think it goes to how the car is maintained. Eric hates Subarus.
@throwbo
@throwbo 3 года назад
@@pennsylvaniacitizen138 He mentions it because it's a known issue (or was - they finally seem to have a handle on it now). A big enough problem that Subaru (reluctantly) did a recall. Yes, MAYBE if you change the coolant often and make sure the ground is good and spit 3 times over your shoulder each time you get in the car, a pre-2010 Subie will never need a head gasket. But for most people doing average maintenance, it's gonna need one sooner or later (sooner rather than later). Whereas if you did the exact same level of maintenance on say a Toyota or a Honda, you wouldn't. Subaru inexplicably used a low quality single layer graphite gasket and the coating deteriorates over time. Even after they knew it was a problem, they kept on using that gasket for many years and they didn't have to pay the full price of their cheapness and stupidity because most of them fail outside of warranty. So they deserve to be shamed for it.

Mine hasn't. 2015 with 110k no head gasket issues so far. It was mainly a select few years where they were using a graphite coated gasket instead of the good MLS gaskets from the factory. I do believe they have learned their lesson on that. For those years that used the Graphite covered gasket when they need to be replaced you just use the MLS from the Turbo version you don't have issues after that.

yeah it's hammering something hard in the upper end, I've heard excessive valve lash off before, but I'd guess that one has something far worse occurring to be that loose, like maybe valve guide or seat walking out a head, adjuster way backed off. I forget the design without looking it up, but many engine rockers can hit the spring cup and knocking the keepers out, then goodbye valve goes into the cylinder. maybe the camera amplified it, but otherwise it's terrible sounding and needs addressed before it decides to go part scattering.

I always hear Self Man Auto but I know it is just his accent. Given he is from New York his accent isn't bad at all compared to what the movies make you think it will be.

To be clear, the head gaskets problems were in one engine series that are no longer being produced, the turbo and six cylinder cars did not have the problem, the recent engines did not have the problem.
@flagmichael
@flagmichael 3 года назад
I think most of them did until the 2009 model year when Subaru changed to multilayer steel headgaskets.
@fubartotale3389
@fubartotale3389 3 года назад
@@flagmichael Yeah, the turbo cars used the MLS gaskets, God only knows why Subaru stayed with the crap coated ones for the entire engine series run. It's like the number one Subatu trope, Hondas have oil dilution issues, Toyota stripped the head bolt threads in the blocks of millions of engines, but all anyone ever talks about are Subaru head gaskets.
@throwbo
@throwbo 3 года назад
one engine series that are no longer being produced - unfortunately, that engine went into 90% of their US cars for 20 years and even after it was a known problem with a known fix they stayed with the crappy coated gaskets for years and years because it saved them 50 yen on every engine or something.

A simple diagnosis, but even many professionals would take all the fun out of it by skipping steps to go faster. Problem is, going faster leads to professional burnout, and even a few unhappy customers along the way.

I just viewed a few of your video's dealing with a stored car and the tag for it was "Easy peasy, lemon squeezy" Not a hater, I just had to laugh about a couple things. I think the answer to your mouse question is single - mouse and many is mice. Then you commented about your large nose and that you can smell mice... Along with your Bob Seger comment it took me to "Titanic" the truthful part of the story. Fleet made the comment to Reginald that he can smell Ice because the person responsible for the key to the locker where the binoculars were kept had been taken the key home with him. So relying on eye site along they are late seeing and hit the iceberg. When things calmed down before they knew they were going to sink, Reginald commented back to Fleet "Smell ice, can ya? Bleedin' Christ!" So, your comment and that comment ran in my head like... I can smell mice ya know, so you can smell mice, can ya ? Bleedin' Christ ! ROFLMAO !!!!

The older 2.5s are super notorious for piston slap. Most of them go for years with that noise without any issue.
@trevorshiffermiller2412
@trevorshiffermiller2412 3 года назад
Yes and no. Older ones were well known for that sound. Newer ones are smother and quieter. My 2015 I compare to an air compressor as it revs up but smooth and nice power. My Mom still thinks I am lying when I tell her it is a 2.5 4 cylinder because her 2.4 4 cylinder isn't anywhere near as peppy as my subaru.

Probably needs a valve adjustment. The camera could also be picking up and amplifying the sound a bit too, but they aren’t a quiet engine by any means.
