Pretty impressive show from the Outback imo. Especially with those tires, seemed like that was what was holding it back more than anything else. I bet with a set of snow or winter-rated ATs it would handle that trail with no problems at all.

You have to drive the Outback differently. Keep throttle pedal pressure and let the computer find traction. Most people instinctually lift off when there’s wheel spin but that’s opposite of what you should do. If there’s traction to be found the car will find it

Where the Subaru was having the tough time making the corner, the snow reminds me of the temps just above freezing where it’s that wet watery type of snow but the temps are also just cold enough that it won’t slush up or melt. Always makes for a fun time getting traction

Both vehicles did this test run with less than ideal tires. The Bronco ran mud tires which are okay, particularly in fresh snow. The Outback looked like it was running on all-season tires which is even more less than ideal. Impressive results none the less, however proper tires are everything even for 4x4's and all-wheel drive vehicles when you take them off-road. That also includes the smallest size wheels, and the most tire wall for a given tire size to allow room for airing down in mud, snow and sand conditions.

This was really just for amusing purposes anyway. :) The next time we get together I'm going to make sure and air down, have my traction boards readily accessible, and a few more tricks up my sleeve. Unfortunately, tires just aren't in the equation for now. Maybe next winter. I'm really not claiming the Baru can out off road the Bronco, I do enjoy pushing the Baru though especially in stock to see what it can and can't do (without wrecking it as it's our only daily driver at the moment) once we can get together more often we'll be sure to either talk a lot more smack about the other vehicles, or really focus on teamwork... With a better driver and better tires that Outback would have cruised through that snow. All in all, really cool video! My wife and I picked up a 2022 Outback Wilderness and although we dont have snow in FL, its been a great car on the sandy beaches!

Great video! Just been looking for the new family car and I’ve landed on these two. The new bronco badlands Sas is pretty darn pricey more of a want, but that forester is like half the price and can almost do that course. Just a few after markets, lift, and tires it should do well out in almost majority of the challenges. You really put him through the ringer. If he had better tires and maybe a lift he would be able to crush more. It’s just those tight turns where the bronco out shines Subaru

They are an "Ok" tire. Good for on the highway and dirt roads. But not aggressive enough for in the woods in the snow. It would of helped if we would of aired him down tho.

@@NorthShoreOverland props to the guy who takes his new outback out and attempts this. it’s a shame Subaru doesn’t put a better tire on this car from the factory. I have a Toyo open country AT3’s on my outback and they’re a great tire for moderate off roading like this.

I have been looking at Tremors, Broncos, and despite the class difference, Wilderness, and I just ordered a Wilderness, because it is the best choice economically for a mostly commuter car that I will only be softroading with anyway. Id like to have a more capable OFF roader, but I can always get a used one down the road. Right now Broncos and Ranger Tremors and just too much money for what they will really do for me. I am also a Subaru guy and have gone everywhere with Subarus so I am used to the limitations, and the surprising capabilites too. On this model the most unfortunate fact is that you cannot put smaller wheels and larger tires on it, which would make more of a difference than any other mod if you could actually do it (Like 15 inch wheels and 30 inch tires). Currently you cannot go smaller than the stock 17 (Which at least isn't 18), and not much bigger than say, 29.5" and that is probably pushing it in some situations without further lift or wheel well carving. With more aggresive tires with higher sidewalls, aired down as needed, this model could eat a lot of trail more effectively. This was a very good test since it was so slippery that any sharp turn of the wheel instantly caused slippage in all wheels due to the added work. With smaller turns and lots of back and forths, it can do it, but the tires are the main deficit here. I saw no real articulation or 4x4 vs AWD tests here. Mostly just tire traction, and tire geometry. Nice Vid. I get my Outback in January, (or Feb. Mar. July) and one of the first things I want to do is take it to some local snow (a few hours away).. Funny, that is exactly the Bronco build I was making. 2 door Badlands, and I bet it is a Manual with the 2.3 as well. You lucky devil... Databyter
@NorthShoreOverland
@NorthShoreOverland 2 года назад
Sounds like you made the right choice. I live 5 minutes from my work, so the Bronco is ok for the drive. But it would cost me a fortune in gas if i had to drive 30 min plus to work everyday.
@randyharrington2653
@randyharrington2653 2 года назад
But one positive thing is if you stay with stock wheels, your tire selection is pretty good with the 225-65-17's on the wilderness vs the stock size Crosstrek tires. I was very limited finding tires for my Crosstrek without different wheels and a lift. I've found quite a few good AT'S for my wilderness
@bubbalo3388
@bubbalo3388 2 года назад
The Subaru not being able to engage all 4 wheels is the problem. Should be a mode for situations like this. The tires spinning and trying to figure it out just makes it worse digging yourself in or messing up what traction you had. You could of swapped tires between the two and the Subaru may of fared a little better, but the Bronco would still out do the Subaru because all 4 wheels are engaged.
